Re: Class of 2015 - socalstanfan1 - 01-05-2015

It is always possible that Stanford was Wilkins' top choice but that he was not admitted.

Unfortunately, recruiting is a zero sum game.  There is no value achieved by getting close or coming in second place.  Donnelly is visiting for the big recruiting weekend, so there might be reason to feel optimistic about him.

I understand that. My comment was aimed at the idea that somehow Clemson is emerging as a rival for us in the south. For a lot of recruits the biggest issue is not whether they should choose Stanford over some other option, it's whether they can get through the admissions process.

Re: Class of 2015 - JohnR34231 - 01-06-2015

I think there are a fair number of East Coast recruits who feel that Stanford is a little farther away from home than they want to go. Wilkins was rumored to be one of those and that might have been a factor in the other recruit's decision to choose Clemson also.

Re: Class of 2015 - TrumpCard - 01-06-2015

The LA Times seems to think that Austin Maihen is coming to Stanford:

Did we miss a commitment, or is this just more of the same speculation/misinformation we've seen repeatedly in the month leading up to signing day?

Re: Class of 2015 - yvonne - 01-06-2015

So, let's see,

DJ Beavers is going to Washington
Jeff Tro.jan played for Stanford
and Dwayne Stanford plays for Oregon

I noticed this also, and I've been trying to find confirmation from any other source, but haven't been able to. What's odd is that it was mentioned as such a certainty. Who knows.

Maihen is a WSU commit who seemed to be re-thinking that decision when Stanford offered him.  As far as I know, he is still a WSU commit.

Re: Class of 2015 - cardcoug - 01-06-2015

With a little googling I've found that it looks like it will come down to admissions. He comes close to saying it, while still remaining nominally committed to WSU, while his coach says he's "expected to attend" Stanford and that it is his dream school.

brobdingnagian news! WR Trent Irwin commits to Stanford - Redrum - 01-06-2015

This kid is the real deal and turned his back on lots of attractive things, including his friend the HS QB already a verbal to ASU, to pick Stanford over the Devils.  The forty-year decision wins again?

Re: Class of 2015 - OutsiderFan - 01-06-2015

That is brobdingnagian, but not surprising.  Why wouldn't he have committed to ASU unless he was waiting on Stanford admission news?

They're not in until they are really IN - Redrum - 01-06-2015

I agree that not committing to ASU was a pretty clear sign he was waiting for word from admissions.  But that wait has ended in last-minute disappointment for several players in the past, most recently last year.  So the brobdingnagian part is...he got in and knew exactly what to do.  It's also brobdingnagian because we really need some talent at WR.

Of course, now we have to worry about Harbaugh swooping in and offering at last minute.

Re: Class of 2015 - Bruce Wang - 01-06-2015

I think he's the highest rated WR we've gotten since Mark Bradford.

At least per Scout, Irwin (11th ranked wide receiver) is more highly regarded than Bradford (13).  Other wide receivers of note in the database: Chris Owuwu (54), Jamal Rashad Patterson (27), Jamari Roberts (29), Ty Montgomery (27), Michael Rector (73), Francis Owusu (33).  Cajuste was ranked 36, but as a tight end.

And of course, Doug Baldwin was ranked 82, the 17th ranked wide receiver in the state of Florida.  And the Whalen "brothers" were both unranked walk-ons. (EDIT: I also forgot Greg Camarillo, another Stanford unranked walk-on WR who made it into the NFL).

Rivals has Irwin #6
247 has Irwin #8
ESPN has Irwin #18

Re: Class of 2015 - MustardtheBallCarrier - 01-06-2015

On his twitter he announced a commitment to University of Stanford.  Too bad, because we could have used him.

Re: Class of 2015 - yvonne - 01-06-2015

No worries, we were able to get David Garnett to come here after committing to the University of Stanford.

Re: Class of 2015 - stupac2 - 01-06-2015

How many recruits commit to "Leland Stanford Junior University"? I wonder if that would confuse some reporters/fans.

No one is immune - BostonCard - 01-06-2015

I briefly attended the Harvard University School of Medicine before being told that it was simply Harvard Medical School.
