Giants are #10 in payroll, above the MLB averagr. But they are also $38 million below the current tax. We'll see what happens after the new CBA.
Dodgers and Red Sox are the only teams hit by the tax.

MLB has proposed a tax beginning at $180 million. There is no way the players will accept that; however, I do expect something that will cause the high payroll teams to think twice about signing guys to “Bauer-like” contracts.

Dodgers down by 2.5 games? That can't be right, I read right on the Cardboard that the Giants needed to watch the second playoff spot closely because there was no way they could finish ahead of the Padres or Dodgers.

I’m sure I said that earlier in the year. This has been an incredible run. Completely unexpected. The over/under was, I believe 74. They may beat that by 30 games…..

I expect the players to fight to shorten years of team control. I believe it is currently 6 years. That is too long now that contracts are less based on what the player has done and more focused on what he projects forward based on analytics.

Wade has been unreal. There is an argument for him being Giants MVP. I know this, no way they are in this position without him. I remember when they got him for Shaun Anderson. Yawn. Big deal, right. Well….
Zaidi finds those diamonds. I think one reason is he is so willing to grab. Some fail and are gone. But Yaz, Wade, Leone, Littell Estrada and I’m sure more to come.
Now, what do they do this offseason. They have a boatload of money to spend. And a pitching staff to rebuild. Job 1 - resign Gausman. Maybe DeSclafani and/or Wood. Then it’s FA time. With more to burn. I do want to see how they navigate those waters.
Dodger payroll is $100,000,000 higher than Giants. To compete year in year out the Giants are going to have to spend. Zaidi and Co have managed to build up the minor league system while assembling a team that has the best record in baseball. Without anyone that is considered star status (Posey was at one time and still is IMO, but he’s older and this was not expected from him. Ditto Crawford, who was one of the better SS in NL but had dropped precipitously in ‘19). What they have done is incredible. How they maintain this moving forward will be fascinating to watch.
Zaidi wins EOY. Kapler MOY. And boy was I wrong on him. There’s still something about the guy that bugs me quite honestly. But he’s done a terrific job. I think a lot of it is he and Zaidi are just so in tune together that it works. Which I’m sure is why Zaidi wanted him in first place.
Giants had hellacious 19 game stretch (A’s, Mets, Braves (road) Brewers (4) Dodgers then at Colorado (where Rockies have a terrific record). Last 16 without an off day. I thought this could be that 5-14 stretch. They went 12-7.

Bryant has said he prefers center field. Fewer opportunities for errors there. Also, I think a full offseason with the Giants' hitting coaches would do wonders for him.

I will neither confirm or deny the culprit ... But whoever it was they weren't alone. Most here expected the wheels to fall off in April and May.
Credit goes to Phogge for predicting the Padres would fall apart - that was a great early call. Equally to Mick who countered early pessimism with data showing the Giants start wasn't just held together by smoke and mirrors.
Here's Phogge on the Padres:
"Musgrave, Paddock, Sidney Lumet.... they will all break down. Somebody will bean Machado and the Padres will fall apart. Book it. - Phogge".
That's pretty right on other than adding Lumet. He's pretty old, lost some speed on his fastball, doesn't field all that well, and his heyday ended shortly after filming "Network".

As a Giants fan, I can't recall a more enjoyable regular season than this one.
P.S. As stated previously, I'm now rooting for one thing fervently: that this team get to play a real playoff series (as opposed to the one-and-done "post-season"). That's not too much to ask . . . is it?

As a teen with only one pennant Seals season behind me 1959 was the best ever. Three team pennant race when the race was more important than the World Series. Giants on top near the end and then came Maury Wills and George Altman.
And no playoffs. Not to mention Clemente, Snider, F Robbie, Musial, Banks, Aaron, Mathews, Roberts, Friend, Spahn.
This year not so bad either.

That loss was a rough one. For my money, the worst was the 11-1 pounding by the Padres on May 9, dropping SFG to 20-14. Got so bad that Darin Ruf pitched the last inning, giving up two runs. That was pretty bad.
Dodgers lost, now 2.5 behind the Giants. Giants would have to go 9-13 in their last 22 games to miss winning 100 games.
109 MLB teams have won 100+ games. Here's the breakdown:
37 won the world series
5 won the championship (pre-world series)
31 lost the world series
14 lost their league championship series
15 lost the division series
6 finished 2nd in their league and missed the World Series
2 finished 2nd in their division and didn't make the playoffs
Now let's say the Giants win 105 games, very possible. That's a far more rarified air. Only 27 teams have won at least 105 games. Here's their breakdown:
15 won the world series
1 won the world championship (pre-world series)
8 lost the world series
2 lost the championship series
1 lost the division series (that was the Dodgers in 2019. Loserssssss....)

What about the 116-win Mariners losing the ALCS to the Yankees in 2001? The Yanks may have been the sentimental favorite right after 9/11 but the Mariners had set an AL record for wins.

The Indians didn't come within a run in any of the four games. The scores were 5-2, 3-1, 6-2 and 7-4. Rhodes was the hammer (4 for 6, 2 HRs), but Hank Thompson, Al Dark, Don Mueller, Wes Westrum and Willie Mays all had a good series and of course, Mays made the amazing catch.
