We all like our players and hate criticizing Stanford athletes but Baird on the other hand hasn't had many really bad games. This one with the obvious offensive errors was a contender, right?

IMO 9 attack errors is bad. If all Stanford front row players had 10 kills and 9 attack errors each in a match, we would lose that match 100% of the time.

A couple of things:

No, serve receive does not count as a dig. So Baird had a great game defensively. And of course the other team targeted her because she is the weakest link among the three passers (most people would be if you are lined up with Rubin and Oglivie). However, ASU served tough and aside from a few shanks here and there, Baird did relatively well putting up a settable ball for Miner. Offensively though... much different story.
I would actually say the middles were more of a reason why we struggled with ASU than Baird's hitting. Just really dumb mistakes from both Vicini and Francis... not to mention the net calls. If Francis and Vicini play like they normally do (and are reliable on offense), then we sweep the Sun Devils.
Controversial Take: I don't really get the hype about Kendall Kipp. Yes, she gets her kills and I definitely would rather have her on our team than the opponents team. But she doesn't close well. If we really need a kill, I don't have confidence that she'll be able to deliver when the pressure is on. Again, she's a fantastic player... but just not the type of player who does well in pressure situations, imho. She lost a lot of steam in the fourth game last night and I just think back to the match against USD where she wasn't able to buy a kill if her life depended on it in the fifth game.
Schroll was a brobdingnagian reason why ASU gave us so much trouble. She was everywhere and her 30 digs says a lot about her hustle and grit. Kudos to her - she was fun to watch.
Miner needs to attack more. Only 3 attacks in four games? Very unusual.

Baird was off her game offensively. I like Baird. I'm an old-school guy. I like the fact she doesn't engage in excessive celebration. Her demeanor on the court is a modest, humble person. I like that a lot. But I'm not going to evaluate a player's performance based on whether I like or don't like the player.

The middles were also off their game at times. In the fourth set Vicini imploring Hambly to challenge a net call when she clearly touched the net is a head-scratcher.

This is a veteran, apparently healthy team playing at the end of the season when everything should be fine tuned. Yet Stanford struggles to have everyone playing at an effective level throughout an entire match. I don't have the answer for it. Maybe there is something to wbb coach Close's focus on the mental aspect of sports. For this Stanford team it's not a question of athletic ability. It's a question of playing consistent ball every match the entire match.

Did a quick partial watch and it was interesting. Not much changed offensively between set 1 and sets 2-4. The offense was mostly the same - Kipp and Rubin - though Kipp did slow some late. Fewer hitting errors obviously helped, but for me the big changes were blocking improved a lot - only 1 block I think in set1. Also, serve return got a lot better and that was mostly Baird. On top of a bad hitting night, she had a really bad set 1 receiving serve. 4 bad passes and 2-3 marginal ones. Sets 2-4, she was much better and reception mistakes looked about even across Rubin, Ogilve and Baird. A final lesser factor was Sami picked up a little in the middle as well.

Overall on Baird, last year she slumped badly second half of the year. We haven’t seen the same this year. She has a few bad games, but who doesn’t? I expect and hope this was a fluke day, and she wasn’t the only player off yesterday.

I do wish though some of the subs had played more just in case one of the core 3 pins has a rough day. But Hambly has clearly emphasized stability and comfort with the starters. Baird was never going to get subbed out. But if Baird hadn’t gotten her passing right after set 1, this was probably going to be a loss. This team will live and die on the core 7.

Last comment that the announcers called out as well, but it’s fascinating to me how Rubin clearly is the emotional spark plug now on a team where she is the youngest core player. It’s an interesting dynamic, but she has been on another level the last 2 matches and she was the one who got things going at the end of set 4 against Houston.

Finally watching now on dvr
At 15-15 timeout in first set
I have the luxury of knowing how this will end up
In first set ASU playing great
They are blocking & digging like crazy and with some great serves and some epic undiggable kills
When they firing on all cylinders they are a top team, as shown by their previous sweep of BYU
And a couple of Bairds misfires were on very poor / awkward sets
Anyway very good to know it turned around and we won out the match and live to play again on Sat

I will stick with my statement. I truly believe this was her worst game of the year. She got few kill attempts because she had 9 errors with just 10 kills. WHen has she hit just above 0.00 offensively? And, yes, defensively, I also think she had a poorer than normal match for her. Until the 4th set, her serve returns were not controlled. Miner is and was fabulous so she can make bad serve returns seem like we're still in system, and Rubin and Kipp played well offensively. I like Baird and thinks she's a great asset and has led the team in many matches, but not yesterday.
