Really impressed with the Auburn closer. In command. Going to be tough to win 'em all.

Having Tim Hudson in the dugout helps. Not impressed with much of the body language of the Stanford pitchers.

We just didn't have the pitching this year, and the bats turned into wet noodles at the most inopportune time of the year.

Losing Jones, Williams, Huff, and Matthews (perhaps Barrera) will be big losses. 

Can Dowd, Bruno, Uber, Pancer, Dixon, and O'Rourke develop into a strong pitching staff?

Any Montgomery-type studs arriving next year?

Disappointing end to a fun season and looking forward to next year.

Tough way to end the year, but what an amazing ride, and great to see the improvement over the last few years.  I’d love to see us get over the final hump (as the womens basketball team did last year).

I get that there’s a lot more chance involved in baseball than other sports, but the lack of run production in Omaha was a bit embarrassing.

I will never be a big baseball fan. Too many random things. Fun to watch a close game, though.

I've read that he's a great hitter but is spotty - at least at the moment - behind the plate. Our freshman, Saum, didn't show an ability to hit college pitching. So, here's to hoping that either Saum's hitting improves dramatically or Moore's catching takes a jump as Huff seems like he's gone for sure.

Pirates went 5-1 vs Dodgers.  Must be the better team…..

OTOH, when your conference seems bent on collecting every major school east of the Rockies and south of the Mason-Dixie line, and then places a dozen teams in the playoffs, including some with .500 conference records, the more likely it is that some of those teams will make a deep run.

Bob, forget actual criticism. You appear as triggered by not praising enough, as the Warriors are by people opining they won't win.

How do you conclude I enjoy Stanford losses based on me saying the SEC is superior to the Pac-12 in Baseball, in addition to Football and Basketball?

That's one impresses leap.

Once Texas and Oklahoma join the SEC, the gap between it and every other conference will be so wide, it won't make any sense for the SEC to compete in the NCAA. It could add a handful more schools, like maybe Florida State, Miami, Clemson, and Louisville, have a 20 team league, pretty much have its own championships, and keep all the revenue to itself.

OF, across a range of threads, the zeal and relish with which you highlight flaws with Stanford teams and at times just downright belittle them certainly seems to suggest you get some kind of perverse pleasure from calling what you perceive to be as flaws or weaknesses out. I don't think BobK's observation is misplaced. I think for some fans who are close to teams either from prior student-athlete participation, or AD ties, or just longstanding booster involvement, these black-and-white proclamations from a self-professed "outsider" can chafe a bit. Just my two cents.

Congrats to our guys for a heck of a season. I'm a happy camper any time Baseball is getting us meaningful Directors Cup points. Anything beyond that is gravy.

Thank you to this year's Stanford Baseball Team for such a wonderful and exciting season.  Making it to Omaha (World Series) is in my book an exceptional achievement.

It's been a Bizarro NCAA Tournament all in all. 

The consensus top team, by far, lost in their home super regional. 
Only two top-8 national seeds made the CWS. 
Only two more top-16 teams made the CWS. 
The 4 SEC teams that made the CWS went 2-5 in the SEC tournament. 
All four seeded teams lost their first game at the CWS. 
The top two betting favorites at the CWS were the first two teams out. 
Looks like 3 of 4 first teams out will be among the 4 seeded teams, and the other was the team that knocked off consensus #1. 
There hasn't been a close game yet in the CWS. Stanford losing to Auburn by 4 is tied for the closest game. 

Stanford spent most of the year with two pitchers they could depend on, and a bullpen that was an adventure at best. Stanford spent the tournament with disasters at starting pitcher and really good bullpen work (mostly). In fact, in the CWS it was our two most dependable guys who gave up the most runs (along with Cody Jensen in the ninth inning of game 1 - but at that point they were just going through the motions). 

It's extreme, but it is part of baseball - the sport where the best MLB teams win a little over 60% of their games, the worst a little under 40%.

Who are the starting pitchers on the weekend next year? Matthews, Dowd, Dixon?

Early thoughts on Stanford baseball 2023. 

As always, a lot about the team depends upon who stays and who goes pro. 
I think essentially everyone could technically return with the COVID eligibility exemption, but that won't matter for most. 
The usual assumption is that seniors and juniors with decent draft prospects leave. That's a good place to start, but of course a lot depends on things we don't know about - like how advanced are individuals towards their degree and how much do they like school. 
Also, I am not sure if any of the sophs are draft eligible. 

With that ... 
Presumably gone: Williams (senior), Kretzschmar (senior), Jones (junior), Matthews (junior), Huff (junior)
Maybe gone:
Barrera (junior) - only had one notable season, but hit for high average with decent power. Played out of position at second base. Might actually improve draft position if he returns and hits for more power. 
Crampton (junior) - not a particularly high draft prospect because he doesn't have much hitting power and defense is good but not spectacular. However, unless his hitting really takes off he's not going to improve draft prospects a lot. 
Key Returners: Park (soph), Bowser (soph), Graham (soph), Troy (soph) Montgomery (frosh), Dixon (soph), Dowd (soph), Pancer (soph), R. Bruno (soph), O'Rourke (soph), Uber (frosh). 

So, it seems possible Stanford could lose as few as two players from the usual hitting lineup, but as many as four barring unforeseen transfer/drop outs or draft eligible sophs. 
Also, Stanford appears that they will be starting a lot of juniors next year; that will be a veteran team. 2024 might be tough. 

Expected new starters:

Texas St. hero Trevor Haskins seems destined for an infield spot - though if none open up somebody will move to the outfield. 

Backup frosh catcher Charlie Saum was a highly rated recruit. Came in to give Huff a rest a few times, but only had 14 at bats (2 hits, one a double) so hard to know how ready he is to hit next year. A hopeful comparison is Carter Graham, who a year ago only had 11 at bats with 1 hit (a single). 
Saum seems he may be in a battle with incoming frosh Moore for the catcher's spot. 

Anybody else who emerges we haven't seen yet. 


As always, the biggest issue will be how the pitching comes along. 
There are a ton of sophomore arms on the team, they have to come on strong next year. 
The inside track for the weekend starters would appear to be: Dowd, Dixon, Uber - as they have the most starts of the returners. 
Of the group, Dowd has the strongest arm. He lost the strike zone towards the end of the season, but pitched very strongly in the tournament. 
Dixon took over from Dowd when Dowd struggled. Then Dixon struggled in the tournament. Dixon doesn't have particularly great natural stuff, so he'll need to locate/mix like Williams did. 

Bruno is the top arm. Seems like he'd most likely stay as the closer. If he continues to develop his secondary pitches he could be a star. 

Other arms that interest me:
Pancer (soph) - throws strikes. Seems like a possible starter. 
O'Rourke (soph) - has pretty good arm, lots of control problems lately. 
Meier (junior) - really came on in the post season. Doesn't throw very hard, but the sidearm motion confuses hitters for a while. 
Jensen (rs junior) - pitched well in the UConn game when UConn had a big lead. Got hammered in the Arkansas game when Arkansas had a big lead. I can't help but remember the promise he showed as a frosh in 2019. Not sure he'll be back. 
Jaden Bruno (rs frosh) - we've never seen him due to rs year and injury. His twin has a great arm, does he? [He wasn't as highly ranked as brother.]

There seem to be four incoming RHP. We should see one or two. I don't know about them but I'll throw out Matt Scott from Redding, CT. He seems to be highest ranked of our pitchers from PG (maybe, I haven't paid to see rankings) and he is listed as 6'6'', so he could look imposing from the mound.

I do think Crampton is spectacular but also think he’ll be back.
We have a pitcher coming in who a poster on another board who saw him last year raved about him. Sadly he didn’t pitch much this HS season although he did hit. Hopefully he can pitch right away for Stanford

1. The season is still worth playing even if a championship eludes your grasp.

2. IIRC, Stanford's last three post seasons ended with losses to Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Auburn, after a 17-2 drubbing by Arkansas in the CWS, all SEC teams.

I'd like to think this trend isn't indicative of anything, but I believe it is.

Some of those ball/strike calls violated the rules of baseball.
