Yes. Defense much better than ‘22.
Offensively, from the outset of the season, I’ve maintained that their offense would be as good as their ability to score without HRs. Cause I knew they’d hit plenty of homers. I don’t have the data, but I’m relatively confident the Giants have improved on that score from after the first month - when it was essentially HR or bust. I also think they’ve cut down on their strikeouts.
And then there is the bullpen. Which has gone from awful in April to terrific from early May on.
Add these factors together, you get a very good team.
Strikeouts - yep, SF has cut down on strikeouts.
April - 27.5%
May - 23.9%
June - 23.0%
And, here is an amazing stat:
Matos has seen 41 pitches out of the strike zone. He has swung and missed once.

35,376 was the biggest weeknight crowd of the season and the sixth-largest crowd of the year overall. Largest Monday night crowd at Oracle since before the pandemic.
There's all kinds of reasons for the fans to come back. 8th straight win on a splash hit walk-off home run by Yaz in extra innings. Casey Schmitt drew his second walk of the year.. Very strong pitching. Ninth inning comeback, Villar hits his first HR since 4/29 in Mexico City, Bailey throws out Tatis at third (with a successful challenge -- Bailey has now thrown out 8 of his last 20 stolen base attempts, including Mookie Betts and Tatis, and Winn threw five shutout innings after the early HR from Soto.
And now both Mrs. Mick and Young Mick -- neither of whom are baseball fans -- want to go to Oracle Park for a game. They like the youth movement, too.

The Tuesday Brisbee article on the Giants monthly stats of interest demonstrated how the team has way cut down on its strikeouts since April. Last night, in bottom of 9th Matos and Schmitt both drew walks around a Bailey single before Pederson drew a game winning walk himself.
What has turned the free swinging Giants into strike zone savants? It sure seems to me you have to give credit to the coaching staff because it is team-wide. They only struck out 6 times last night, and that was after 5/6 batters whiffed over the first 2 innings. They drew 5 walks. On Monday they drew 7, 3 Sunday, 6, Sat, and 8 on Friday. The Giants have only struck out 10 times in first two games of Padres series.
And another 35k attendance night to cheer ANOTHER late inning comeback victory!

Both Kapler and FZ emphasized the need to make more contact early on this season. Hitters appear to have made two strike adjustments.
One thing that has been important to me since day one is scoring w/o HRs. The Giants have improved significantly on that score:
April 26 Games. 46 HRs 126 runs
May. 29- 30 and 131
June 18- 17-108

Ryan Walker opens against Yu Darvish tonight. Walker's ERA is 1.65. Darvish gave up six earned runs in five innings against Tampa Bay and four earned runs against Colorado in 5 1/3 innings before that.
Should be fun. My guess is a lineup similar to last night's (Pederson, Estrada, Davis, Conforto, Yastrzemski, Matos, Bailey, Crawford, Villar.

Turns out they didn't need Wade. Slater had a pinch hit single, Matos and Sabol two hits. Crawford, Pederson, Yaz, Davis knocked in runs as they won their tenth straight, 4-2. Walker started, Hjelle pitched well, both Rogers, Luke Jackson, and Doval. Hjelle won, Doval got save, Tyler Rogers got his 15th hold. Casey Schmitt walked TWICE. Schmidt has four walks in his last three games...

Thanks, Mick. I don't think Sanchez was blocking the plate in tagging Sabol . Giants scored 3 off that call. Makes up for bad calls going the other way, I guess.

Sanchez was up the line straddling the chalk. It was a call that could have gone either way since it can be argued that Sanchez moved up the line in order to make a legitimate attempt to receive a throw (which is permissible). Of course, the counter argument can be made that he was simply trying to block Sabol’s path to home plate.
Regardless, the call had a significant impact on the outcome of the game. Once in a while, a judgment call goes in your favor. Don’t ask questions, just run to the bank and make a deposit.

The Sanchez block call had some merit unlike the horrible blocked plate call against Rangers the night before that Bruce Bochy labeled the worst call he’s ever seen.
What is the word on Wade Jr.? Now Yaz has hamstring tightness. The Giants are now running low on LH bats. They won’t need them today with Snell pitching, but will for the DBacks.
I don’t even remember the last 10-Game win streak, and I certainly don’t remember one longer in all my life as a fan since the late 70s. I’m more pleased to be 10 games over .500 before midway point after such a slow start.
But give credit to those who said the Giants were a terrible team as constructed to start the season. Schmitt, Bailey, Beck, Matos, Winn, and even Hjelle last night have all been rookies along with Sabol, who have infused an energy and needed ability into the team that it lacked before they were called up. We’ve been waiting for this day for years. Not the 10-game W streak (though it is nice), the farm system actually producing players that stay and lead to winning games.
Personally I think fans would way rather have exciting young home grown players than splashy free agents. The fans were griping about the lack of free agent signing splashes this off season because the recent and mostly historical record of developing home grown talent has been so poor, and it looked like major regression of the top prospects last year. But Matos and Bailey in particular raised their performance to ML level this year, so all is forgiven. And to be fair, Conforto and Davis have been very good signings even though not seemingly so when made.
Would like to see Matos and Schmitt barreling more balls, but expect that is coming.
Note on Harrison: Teng was promoted to Sac this week and they appear to have scratched Harrison so Teng could pitch on his regular rotation and give Harrison one more day of rest after throwing his most pitches of season in last outing. Doesn’t seem he will be called up this weekend. Probably want him to get another 5+ inning start in Sac or two before the call comes.

Davis was obtained in a trade with the Mets for Darrin Ruf. . Giants also got three pitchers - Szarpucki, Seymour and a third whose name escapes me. An absolute steal.

I suppose I understand MLB's overreaction with respect to the Sanchez/Sabol call last night. They're trying to eliminate unnecessary season-ending injuries to Hall of Fame bound catchers like Buster Posey (and other players) by eliminating collisions at the plate. Sanchez could have caught the ball on the right side of the basepath, he chose not to do so. He blocked the path to the plate. Sabol tried to go around him. I can see why former catchers like Bochy and Melvin would get so hot about it, they never played under that rule and they probably still have injuries from those collisions. Pete Rose bowled over Bruce Bochy once.

Speaking of Bochy, the Texas GM called Bochy their biggest free agent acquisition of the off-season, and that was after spending $260 million on players. And Texas has the third best record in baseball (Giants are currently sixth best).
As of last night, the Giants officially have the first wild card spot, by 1/2 game. They are 2 1/2 games behind the Diamondbacks and are closing fast, making up five games in the last ten. Reds have won 11 in a row. No American League team have won more than three in a row.
And as for the Giants multiple come-from-behind wins in the ninth inning...since they've been in SF, they've only won 5.3% of those games. They've had four such wins this season after just three all of last season. The 2016 Giants had MLB's best record at the all star break, but didn't have a single 9th inning comeback win all season. The best was actually the 1986 Giants which had NINE wins after trailing at the start of the ninth inning.

- John McGraw managed the Giants to just one perfect 7-0 road week in his 24 year managing career. Same with Felipe Alou. Same with Bochy. Roger Craig, Dusty Baker, Alvin Dark, Leo Durocher never did it. It's only happened five times in their 141 year franchise history. And here's the kicker: Kapler has done in twice, once in 2021 and once this year. Maybe...just maybe...Kapler knows a little bit about managing.
