There were some poignant articles written about Hal Smith a few years back after he died. His home run actually gave the Pirates the lead; the Yankees tied it up before Mazeroski settled things in the bottom of the inning. So if the Pirates relievers had held the lead then Hal Smith would have become some sort of Pittsburgh icon, but instead he was mostly forgotten. Similar to Dave Henderson in the 1986 World Series; delivering the game winning home run to give the Red Sox their first championship in 68 years (after his famous homer off Donnie Moore in the ALCS) would have made him a Boston icon forever one would think, but of course the Mets crazy comeback in the bottom of the tenth wiped out the memories of Henderson's shot off of Aguilera in the top of the inning.

That's what I said way back in the thread. A bunch of aging Seals that we saw on 16th Street had had their MLB moments when we were in diapers. Gene Bearden was the hero of the '48 Series, a 21 game winner and Grady Hatton had some good years with the Reds. Cloth diapers BTW.

What Seal was at the plate in the '55 Series when Jackie stole home? Actually he was out but the ump missed the call and Yogi went crazy.
What USF grad was one of only four to hit a homer over the center field scoreboard at Seals Stadium? Who were the other three? Note: the Giants placed a fence below the board in '58 making it easier to hit CF home runs.
What TV company's ad appeared on the narrow fence below the RF bleachers at Seals. What two Cardboarders engaged in fisticuffs above that sign?

Wasn't Mike Marshall, he went 15-12. Hated the Dodgers in 1974. Giants stank (Dodgers won season series 12-6), and the Dodgers went on to lose the World Series to the A's in five. Cey, Lopes, Russell, Garvey in IF, Buckner, Wynn and Crawford in OF. Yeager and Ferguson switched off behind the plate. Great starters in Messersmith, Sutton, Rau and John. Downing & Zahn alternated as spot starters. Marshall was a one-man wrecking crew, over 200 innings in relief. Charlie Hough was the setup guy with his knuckler. But they got smoked by Campy, Bando, Tenace, Rudi, Fosse, North, Green, Washington, Vida, Catfish, Fingers, Holtzman and Mr. October. I was a closet A's fan for five years from 1971 to 1975.

Yep. Frick replaced George Crowe with Musial, Gus Bell with Mays and Wally Post with Aaron.

Still looking for the only professional relief pitcher to win at least 20 games. Bobbbb and I saw him pitch often.

Very good guesses, but no.
Player #1 was an excellent player who played for a lot of teams for various reasons.
Player #2 was a good (but not great) player who was an all star for the Giants among others.

Nope.
#2 was peripherally involved in one of the most famous plays in baseball history, but not while with SF.
Both players enjoyed their best years in the 90s and early 00s.
