Did it say that somewhere? I didn't think the bench players would have to sit out the next game. Cardosa will (or at least should).

From what I read, it's just Cardosa

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - CompSci87 - 03-10-2024

I think only Cardoso. A graphic I saw on TV said she was ejected for fighting, the others for leaving the bench. IIRC those are both mentioned explicitly in the rules, with fighting the one that can lead to a suspension.

So South Carolina will be missing Cardoso while it annihilates the likes of UT Martin or Radford.  I bet South Carolina wouldn't have any trouble if they had to play 4 on 5.

I'd rather she be DQed for the rest of the year.  DQ Angel Reese too, while they are at it, for repeatedly pulling Cardoso's hair.  Sheesh, this stuff makes me ill.

Disrespect for the game and the decorum of the athletes usually starts with the coach. Mulkey's behavior (words and attitude) after the game should get her the ultimate DQ. No one seems to have the huevos to curb her. Kudos to USA Today's sportswriter for her critical analysis in today's paper.

Does it make me a bad person that I found a clip of the "melee" looking for shades of Malice at the Palace only to be disappointed by some shoving and the whole thing is over in less than ten seconds, other than officials watching a monitor forever?  I mean that dude came out of the stands, so there was a little Detroit goin' on, but from reactions here I thought there must have been closed fists, etc. Nope. Calling for permanent DQs is a little overly dramatic. Basketball is a contact sport. Tempers flare; some players are jerks.

The dude was the brother of the decked LSU player. Players leaving the bench and all but one did were ejected.

I don't think so. I had watched most of the game, and then determined SC was going to win and got distracted by some stuff in my house.  And then I got a text from a friend saying, "Did you see the brawl between South Carolina and LSU??"  It certainly started very chippy between Reese and Cardoso, and I was kind of waiting for it to happen.  Then I ran to my computer to watch it...and, yeah, I was kind of like this is not a brawl.  And honestly, I don't think it is so dramatic as everybody is making it out to be.  There was some pushing.  That's it.  No punches thrown.  Nothing much besides two pushes ... one that Flaujae did on Watkins, as Watkins ran up jabbin at her.  And then of course Cordoso.  But beyond that, it was not a brobdingnagian deal, and the amount of time the refs spent, and the amount of time everybody is talking about it is too much imho. Then again, I view women the same as men, as human beings, playing at the highest level.  Perhaps I feel this way because my sister played at this level, and since I was 6 I saw her and her teammates going at it.  So, for me, it is was them getting a bit overboard with their emotions.  And Cardoso should have been rejected.  I am not dimishing that.  But I really don't think it was as dramatic as the press and everybody is making it out to be.  But that seems to be how I feel about most things nowadays.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - 2006alum - 03-12-2024

Creme seems to be of the view that Texas remains a 2 Seed regardless of whether they win the Big-12 tourney, and since his point of comparison is U$C, that seems to suggest he thinks we're the no. 3 overall.

https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/30423107/ncaa-women-bracketology-2024-women-college-basketball-projections

Quote:Texas held on to win in the Big 12 semifinals against Kansas State to keep its title hopes alive, but the Longhorns' opportunity for a No. 1 seed is likely gone. That has nothing to do with what the Longhorns haven't done; a Big 12 tournament championship would be significant. But USC has done more. The Trojans have the most wins in the country against the NET top 25 (eight), and their march to the Pac-12 title on Sunday was done with victories over two other teams in the top 10 of the NET (UCLA and Stanford). The triumph over the Wildcats represents a top-25 win for Texas, giving the Longhorns five. Iowa State, Tuesday's opponent in the championship game, is now in the top 40 of the NET. It's impressive, but Texas' résumé won't rise to the level of USC's accomplishments. Also on Monday, Oklahoma's decisive loss to the Cyclones cost the Sooners a spot in the top 16 -- opening the door for Colorado to slide back in.

Women’s basketball Bracket Watch: Stanford or Texas for the fourth NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed? - The Athletic

The author of this article has Stanford getting the remaining #1 seed over the heifers.  Reasoning is that Stanford has more wins over top teams than the heifers and the Pac 12 is much stronger that the Big 12.

No one is getting DQed for pulling hair as I've seen in a replay, but I hope the refs are aware now that she’s doing that. It should be called as an ordinary contact foul.

In all the talk about the fight, I missed hearing that Reese had been called for an intentional foul (elbow, reportedly) in Q2. (Remember, 2 intentional fouls, or an intentional and a technical, disqualifies the player for the game.) At the time of the fight, Reese was limping down the sideline while in the game. She did not participate in the confrontation in any way.

The 2nd DQ for fighting in a season will DQ the player for the season.

If I had been an official, I might have gone easier on the bench players. Except for one, I don't think any went outside the "bench area" (28' line) toward the fight. They generally did step onto the court, which is outside the bench area during play (but is allowed for spontaneous reaction) and inside the bench area during a timeout. It was unclear to me when the officials called a time out.

Yes, Mulkey is seen angrily going toward the fight, not attempting to stop the confrontation. Mulkey's post-game comments were in poor taste, and contribute to a confrontational atmosphere. There was a LSU player that I might have called for fighting because of a confrontational act. So. Car. #2 did 3 acts that could have (perhaps should have) earned her a fighting penalty. Staley herself didn't do anything to get her players out of there, but one of her assistants did a good job to get in there to stop it.

One of the officials, Angelica Suffren, is the first to confront the player who knocked the opponent down, but then when the confrontation escalates, she bails and is seen walking away while the players are still confronting each other. She should be censured for not helping to keep the players separate.

An intentional foul was called for the initial grab during play, resulting in 2 foul shots by So.Carolina. Then the disqualifying foul was called on So. Carolina, resulting in 2 foul shots by LSU. Then both teams were given a technical foul, so neither got a foul shot.

These are the rules to be aware of:
Quote: Rule 10-15 Art. 4. When, during a confrontation, an individual uses unsporting acts or
comments that, in the opinion of the official, provoke the other individual to
retaliate by fighting, it shall be ruled that both individuals have been involved
in the fight.

Quote:Art. 11. When an individual participates in a second fight during the same
season, that individual shall be suspended for the remainder of the season,
including tournament competition.
Art. 13. When an individual with eligibility for the next season participates in
a fight during their final game of the season and that fight is the individual’s
second fight of the season, that individual shall be suspended for the first three
regular-season games (not exhibitions) of the next season.

Quote:Art. 16. After a game, conference offices or the assigning authority may correct
an error about who was involved in a fight, but cannot change an official’s ruling
that a fight took place or lessen the severity of the penalty. The conference office
or assigning authority may make those penalties more severe.

Quote:10-11.2 h. Team followers (fans, bands, cheerleaders and mascots associated with
either team) shall not commit misconduct, including, but not limited to,
the following:
4. Delaying the game by preventing the ball from being promptly made
live or by preventing continuous play, such as, but not limited to,
followers entering the playing court before the player activity has been
terminated. When the delay does not interfere with play, it shall be
ignored.

Note 1: Before penalizing a follower(s) of a team for violating Rule
10-12.2.h, the officials shall have knowledge as to which team’s follower(s)
committed the act.
Note 2: When the misconduct of the follower(s) for violating Rule 10-12.2.h
is extreme or excessive, such behavior may be penalized by the official
requesting home/contest management to eject from the premises the team
follower(s) involved in the misbehavior. In such a case, a technical foul shall
not be assessed.
I only know of one fan who went onto the court, Since he was arrested and removed, there was no technical foul for the act. Two others (one sitting with the man who was arrested) made it to the scorer's table which probably wouldn't rise to the level of a technical. Security stopped those two quickly. (Note that the officials don't need to have knowledge of the follower(s) who delay the game. If 100 items are thrown onto the court but no one is identified as someone who threw something, the officials can still assess a technical.)

This kind of crap is turning me off to the sport. NCAA better fix this problem real quick. If it means calling 50 fouls in a game, so be it. But I’m not gonna watch another season like this. Cam probably is going to the WNBA because she won’t get beat up as much.

The AP WBB All American team has been named. Cam is on it as one of the 5 player first team -- all the obvious and predictable choices -- Clark, Cam, Bueckers, Watson, Hildalgo. But disappointing, Kiki didn't even make the honorable mention list, after the 3rd team. She deserved to be somewhere on this team!
