Bruce Bochy and Gabe Kapler have the same number of MOTY awards (1).  That tells me everything one needs to know about the award.

Vogt did a great job in the regular season but he had a poor post-season.  Like so many rookie managers he exhibited a tendency to over manage when the spotlight became brighter.  His pitching changes were too frequent and costly.

I ‘m sure he learned some valuable lessons and won’t be so anxious to use the hook next time.

By the way, Bob Melvin has won the award three times.  Hmmmm…

Yeah. Same as Dusty Baker. And probably way too much for a guy who has won one postseason series in a 22-year managing career. At least Vogt won his post-season series in his first season. And the Guardians did bounce back from a 2-1 deficit in the ALDs, so...probably did some decent managing along the way. Still, to your point, I doubt Vogt will pitch Tanner Bibee to Giancarlo Stanton again any time soon.

Speaking of which...I wouldn't be too quick to dump on Vogt. He improved his team by 16 games, third most among all 30 MLB teams...and the team just in front of him was the woeful Oakland Sacramento A's. And his young team -- it was supposed to be a rebuilding year -- adored him.

I think Vogt has the potential to be a very good manager.  I just want to see if he can back up his rookie year with several more stellar years before anointing him as the next best thing.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 10-30-2024

How would you grade the main free agents of 2024? My thoughts:

Nick Ahmed. Hit .232, no power, let go. .581 OPS. Grade: F
Mark Canha. 32 games as late season pickup; .288/.376/.329/705. Inexpensive. Grade: A-
Matt Chapman. Short-term deal with opt-out, best fWAR in the league behind Ohtani, relatively affordable $151 mms./6 year deal. Grade: A
Jerar Encarnacion. Cheap replacement for Soler. .248/.277/.425/.702. Grade: C-
Jordan Hicks. Paid like a reliever, had a chance to start, hit the innings wall. Threw third most innings on the team, 4.10 ERA, 4.37 FIP. Not many strikeouts (96 in 10B-.2 innings) despite his arm strength. Still just 27. C+ for this year.
Spencer Howard. 2 starts, 7 games, 5.63 ERA, 3.88 WHIP. Grade: F.
Jung Hoo Lee. BA .262, .310 OBP. Thought he was turning the cover. No power, no base stealing. Still, struck out only 13x. 0.3 WAR, $7.8 mms. this year with $18 mms. transfer fee.  Grade: D for this year.
Tom Murphy. 34 ABs, hurt, -0.4 WAR, .211. At least he had terrible defense. Grade: F.
Robbie Ray. 3-2 in seven starts, came back late, 4.70 ERA, but with borderline amazing 1.141 WHIP. Grade Incomplete.
Blake Snell. 1/2 season terrible, 1/2 season unhittable. $32 mms., will out opt. 3.12 ERA, best among starters. Lost a draft pick to get him. Grade: B-
Jorge Soler. 93 games, underperformed all career averages slightly. Actually did very well in the 49 games for Atlanta. 12 Hrs for SF. Grade: B

Overall grade: D-. May revise if Lee, Hicks, Chapman, Canha, Snell, Encarnacion, Ray all work out.

Based on this year alone…

Ahmed - F (a total waste of time and money)
Canha - C (no impact plus or minus)
Chapman - A (a star, but not a franchise player)
Encarnacion - C (see Canha)
Hicks - C (did not show he can be counted on as a season-long member of a pitching rotation)
Howard - F (not exactly the definition of a “forever Giant”)
Lee - Incomplete (wait until next year)
Murphy - F (see Ahmed)
Ray - Incomplete (see Lee)
Snell - C (horrible start, great in-between, so-so finish)
Soler - F (see Ahmed and Murphy)

Zaidi - F (overall, the guy never demonstrated he was a good judge of talent)

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 10-30-2024

I gave Canha a high grade because I'm a sucker for batting average (he was #2 on the team at .288, the best of his career) and on base percentage (.376, third best on team after Sabol and Wade, and third best in Canha's 10 year career). And he stole three bases in 32 games, didn't get thrown out. And he was one of the very, very few Giants with a positive Rtot in the field, +2 at 1B.

At the same time, he had almost no power. Just three doubles among his 21 hits. 107 OPS+.

At any rate, I don't think he's going to come back at age 36. Brandon Belt has better odds of returning.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - old spanish trail - 10-31-2024

Maybe I'm the only one, but I liked Encarnacion.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 10-31-2024

The Giants have promoted an internal hire, Zach Minasian, to be the new General Manager.

Minasian was elevated from his VP of Professional Scouting role, having been hired into that slot by Farhan in 2019. Prior to the Giants, Minasian spent 14 years with the Brewers. He has two decades-plus in scouting, which was Posey's priority. At Milwaukee, Minasian was the youngest scouting director in baseball at age 27. His father was the longtime clubhouse manager for the Texas Rangers, and Zack, Sr. brought all four of his sons to the ballpark on many occasions.

Minasian is a bit of a curveball...people thought the interior hire might be Jeremy Shelley, who's been with the team for 20 years.

Minasian's brother Perry is the GM of the Los Angeles Angels. He's also the godson of Tommy Lasorda. Lasorda was not happy when Minasian informed him he was going to work for the Giants.

The Dodgers' most recent World Series win was their eighth, pulling them into a tie with the Giants for fifth most titles in MLB history.

RE: SF Giants 2024 - Mick - 11-01-2024

Most interesting free agent is Juan Soto of the Yankees. He hit 41 home runs last year and he's only going to be 26.

Might be a $622 million contract:

Would he come to the Giants? The conventional wisdom is that hitters don't want to come to Oracle. But Soto would have had the same number of home runs as either a Yankee or a Giant. In fact, he hit a ball on 9/26/23 that would have been a home run at Oracle and no other park in baseball. Here's his 2023 distribution:

I think the negative hitting effect at Oracle is overblown. Per this chart, the average batted ball is only 1.1 feet shorter at Oracle, making Oracle #16 -- or perfectly average -- among the 30 MLB teams. I think the reputation comes from a combination of sub-par/mediocre Giants hitters and comparatively strong Giants pitching.
Statcast Park Factors | baseballsavant.com

And Soto hits extremely well at Oracle, better than his career average, 5th best of all 15 NL ballparks, and 4th of all parks where he's had at least 100 plate appearances:

Works for me. Snell has formally opted out. Maybe we get Walker Buehler. We'll see if the new GM wants to continue the short-term deals with opt out options.

Posey is calling the shots. The new GM will follow his lead. As for the idea of offering one year deals with opt-outs, Buster is on the record as opposing that strategy. I think we have already seen the last one.

Soto is not coming to SF.  There is no need to even think about the possibility.  He is a New York/LA type of free agent.

The Giants NEED hitters.  They need a 2B who can get hit for average along with a franchise hitter who can drive in runs.  As for pitching, Snell didn’t contribute much in ‘24.  Pick up a guy who can slot into the 3rd or 4th spot in the rotation and the pitching will be solid.

Agree re Soto. Last year, be damned, I want Snell back. If he's all in, he wins 23 games. Thairo was hurt all year. Can he be the 2B we need? He's had plenty of clutch hits and can hit for power. His fielding is in the upper half, at least, and he lead the team in steals a couple years ago, maybe.

Robbie Ray has formally opted in, as expected. He's sticking around for another two years and $50 mms.

Wilmer Flores has formally opted in, as expected. He gets another year at $3.5 million.

BTW, Manaea is again a free agent, third year in a row.

Big screw up with Manaea, imo. He was jerked around between start and bullpen, didn't like it but kept his mouth shut, liked SF, but went to the Mets instead for $ and starting job. Now, he looks pretty good to everyone, but will cost alot more than SF would have had to shell out to keep him.

BTW, Manaea is again a free agent, third year in a row.

$3.5M is worth the price of dumping Flores…

That's the speculation...keeping in mind that he was injured all of last year and the year prior his line was .284/.355/.509/.864. and a 137+ OPS, by far the best on the team. Second best was Late Night LaMonte Wade, and the two of them made a perfect lefty/righty tandem at first base with the fifth best WAR by position (1B) across all of MLB.

He was having a little bit of a tough time starting. My son and I traveled down to San Diego to watch the G's play the P's and Sean started. In two innings he gave up five runs, four earned, and didn't get either of the first two batters out in the third inning. He faced 15 batters and gave up five htis and four walks, and when they took him out (mercifully), he was clearly furious and threw his glove on top of the dugout. A fan had to retrieve it. Manaea's season ERA at that point was 7.85.

To show you how long ago that was, Thairo Estrada had four hits in five ABs and was batting .350 on the season.

And speaking of the 2023 team, Joc Pederson has opted out of a $14 million contract with the D'Backs. His line was .275/.393/.515/.908, a 151 OPS+. He led the league in getting HBP, 18 times.

Donny Barrels is a free agent.

Donovan Solano played for the Giants for three years, his collective line was .308/.354/.435/.890. Last season, he played for the Padres and his line was .286/.343/.417/.760. In the three years since he left the Giants, he's played for the Reds, Twins and Padres and his line has been remarkably consistent; BA between .282 and .286, OBP between .339 and .369, OPS between .724 and .760. Silver Slugger for the Giants when he played 2B (his natural position).

Utility infielder, pinch hitter, DH. Durable, played more the last three years than he did for the Giants. Hits really well at Oracle, 4 for 11 with 3 doubles last year. More productive off the bench than as a starter, hit .429 as a pinch hitter in 26 ABs.

But he'll be 37 years old. Interesting possibility.
