Apparently the Giants are targeting Ha-Seong Kim, Jung Hoo Lee's former teammate. Kim earned a 2023 Gold Glove as a utility infielder. He can play 2B, SS and 3B. He's played the most at SS. Generally has very positive Rtot, excellent range, played with a labrum tear last year, might not be ready until June or July this upcoming year.
The really super good news for the Giants is that he's a Scott Boras client (he said, sarcastically). Supposedly his market value is 4 years/$49 mms. It would be nice to have two Gold Glove fielders on the left side of the infield, particularly with all the ground balls that the pitching staff generates.

Too frequently, Zaidi signed guys coming off major injuries. Too frequently, those guys were busts as they never fully recovered from their surgeries. I am hopeful that Posey will take a different approach. Stop signing guys who have significant health concerns. No to Kim. Let him sign short term contract elsewhere and pick him up on the rebound if he proves that he can play at a pre-injury level.

Disagree with you here. Kim is worth the risk. Great defensively (even if he has to move to second), excellent speed. He’s not a MOO bat. But he hits enough. Especially when you add his base stealing abilities.

He's actually a better second baseman than shortstop. He'd be interesting, for sure.

Well, since I believe will SF will make a major push to sign him, we will see close-up whether taking the risk was a wise move.

Tyler O'Neill seems like an interesting free agent. Played for the Red Sox last year, 31 home runs, made $5.85 million. Plays left field. 29 years old, RHB, has only been a full-time player twice in his seven seasons, had 30+ HRs both of those years. 132 OPS+, .847 OPS. Good fielder, has two Gold Gloves in 2020 and 2021. Even better, Boston didn't make him a qualifying offer, so no loss of draft picks. Bats mainly third and fifth.
Downside...has not hit well historically at Oracle, in less than 40 ABs. Small sample size.
Scott Boras client, so he'll probably come cheap...

Former SF Giants outfielder Randy Winn is the new Vice President of Player Development. He had five good seasons with the Giants amidst a 13 year career. Was also a two-sport star at SCU, playing basketball with Steve Nash and baseball.
Winn had been a scout under new GM Zack Minasian since 2019, also participated in broadcasts since 2013, and he's been put in charge of the Giants Community Fund, two months ago.

Alyssa Nakken has left the Giants to pursue a career in the garden spot of America...with the Cleveland Guardians. She will work with former SF Giants catcher and current AL Manager of the Year, Steven Vogt. She'll be in a player development role. Former Giants coaches Craig Albernaz and Kai Correa are also with the Guardians, as is starting pitcher Alex Cobb (2.76 ERA) as the Guardians transform into SF Giants East. The Guardians improved from 76-86 in 2023 to 92-69 this year, and an appearance in the ALCS vs the Yankees.

Brandon Crawford announced his retirement today. By far, the best shortstop I have seen play in person. He will be honored at Oracle in late April when Bruce Bochy and the Rangers come to town.

Buster Posey was named president of baseball operations on September 30. And his first move, getting Matt Chapman signed, was a very strong one. In no particular order, I consider these to be somewhat headscratching:
1. Jeff Berry, who was Buster's agent, was signed as an advisor. If he turns out like Bob Myers, great.
2. Bobby Evans hired as advisor. Given that Evans was GM from 2015-2018 and supervised years of drafts that flat out sucked, I do wonder about it.
3.Ex-Bronco, Randy Winn, is the new VP of player development. As an SCU guy, I'm very happy about it. Hope he has the skill set to do so.
4. They're keeping Pete Putila, former GM. Why keep him? He didn't do well.
5. They replaced Bryan Price as pitching coach with JP Martinez, who was their assistant pitching coach. Now this may be a great move...Martinez has been with the Giants for two different managers and two different presidents of baseball operations and the Giants ERA is 4th in MLB if you go back four years. So maybe this is a great move.
6. They kept Pat Burrell as hitting coach. Justin Viele left for the Texas Rangers to reunite with Donnie Ecker. Those two did great things on the Giants hitting in 2020 and 2021. Ramos gave credit to Viele for hi breakout 2024 year. They are looking at internal candidates Damon Minor and Travis Ishikawa.
I'm not saying these are bad moves. And they signed Max Stassi as the backup catcher. Stassi's been out of baseball for two years (personal matter and injured), so...we'll see.

Posey is a sink or swim choice by Greg Johnson. Buster’s lack of experience is countered by the goodwill he brings to the job. Is that goodwill enough to give him some breathing room as he attempts to build the Giants into a contender? If not, how does Johnson tell him, “thanks and best wishes”.
The same applies to Luck. He has no experience managing a major collegiate football program. However, he is beloved by the Stanford community. How much time does he have to bring the Stanford football fortune’s back to life before the administration and fan base become restless? And how does one tell Luck, “thanks and best wishes”.

Forgot to mention internal hire of Zack Minasian as SFG's GM. Two interesting minor items re: Posey -- after SF canned Zaidi, Posey stated that Melvin would hire and promote coaches and be in charge of day-to-day managing, departing from prior policy. Secondly, when he promoted JP Martinez, Posey elevated his last pitching coach, though Posey stated Melvin's comfort factor with JP was the key factor. And JPM is bilingual, important in today's game. JP's young (42), well versed in current analytics and modern pitching methods.
We've all seen situations in which there is rot at the top, but the next layers are solid, if not exceptional. And maybe that's the case with SF. Maybe Zaidi had a strong structure in place but he personally gummed up the works. Hope so. We'll see.
I believe both Posey and Luck will be given a lot of rope. You don't turn around from three consecutive losing seasons and four 3-9 seasons immediately. If they both show early progress -- and I think they will -- management will laud and reward them. Luck's got the tougher job, by far. Stanford needs a unique individual running that football program, and I doubt that TT is that individual. But there are so many recent challenges in NCAA football, I hope Luck gets some room to make mistakes. But he's a tie to the most successful era in that program, the team was 31-8 when he played with a Sun, Orange and Fiesta Bowl and a #4 and #7 ranking and a 2nd place Hiesman Trophy vote each time.

Hes only in an advisory role. Buster has known him forever and trusts him. Plus as an agent, he has good contact with players and negotiating. Myers was GM. Not equivalent. But agree on the sentiment!

Not a good GM, but had been a part of Giants drafts and player development during the run. Just cause he’s not a good No 1 doesn’t mean he’s not a good baseball man.

A whole new position. Haines remains as Dir of Player Development. Baggerly indicated Haines had way too much on his plate. Winn is highly respected. A little unclear to me exactly what his role will be. The positive to me is the emphasis it places on player development.

Dont know if Pryce retired on was fired. I’m guessing here, but suspect Melvin thinks highly of JP - and I’m betting Webb had some input.

Minor has been in organization for quite awhile and is highly regarded within it. I haven’t heard Ishikawa as a possibility .

Also - you mention Minasian in another post. That is his most important hire. Baseball lifer. Another one greatly respected in and out of organization. Supposedly was not on Posey’s original list.
