Re: Class of 2015 - Papa John - 01-10-2015

From Bryce Love's twitter account:

The Volunteer fans are actively tweeting Love to lure him to Tennessee. But we'll have to wait until the 30th to hear his decision. And according to 247, Love visits Stanford on the 16th and Tennessee on the 23rd.

Timing of his announcement of his OVs and of his acceptance makes it clear he scheduled the visits before getting accepted. I wonder if he actually ends up visiting Tenn now? Give him a few days to think about it, visit Stanford and have a great time with the rest of the guys...

With good news comes some bad news. Feeling really bad for our long time commit, Arrington Farrar, if this is an admissions casualty.

Re: Class of 2015 - OutsiderFan - 01-11-2015

Why do I always feel like someone has died when these admission denials are made?  It especially sucks when it happens to kids like Farrar, Tucker, and Gray, who were adamant about their passion for Stanford, and who made their commitments so early.

That tweet does sound pretty sad. I hope it all works out for him.

Re: Class of 2015 - socalstanfan1 - 01-12-2015

This truly sucks. Farrar has been a brobdingnagian booster of Stanford for the entire recruiting cycle, from what I've read, talking up the program with loaded of other recruits. I hope he goes on to enjoy lots of success both on the field and off. I'm sure he will.

Re: Class of 2015 - StanFan88 - 01-12-2015

I always feel bad when good guys who clearly are all in for Stanford don't get in.  I really hope he lands on his feet and does great with another program and makes a good 40-year decision.

It "feels" like detente w/ admissions is eroding - Redrum - 01-12-2015

It's possible that we are just trying to get less qualified students by admissions but we had last minute dings last year of  kids who had embraced Stanford for a long time.  Now, maybe our coaching staff has to play with the academic cards they're dealt and just don't want to be the ones to self-police on academics.  Maybe the staff's philosophy is to say "what the hell" and let the admissions drama play out because they don't want to be bad guys.  But it sort of feels like maybe there was a 5-yr. deal to jerk football out of its rut and now selectivity is being jacked up.

Or, maybe these kids are more borderline than we thought.  We'll never know.

Re: Class of 2015 - oman - 01-13-2015

I feel terrible for those who dream really hard and are really emotionally invested in this.

These guys are incredible athletes.  I doubt they will make this kind of bump a defining and negative part of their lives.

I don't think there is any evidence that admissions is becoming more stringent.  I do think that the coaching staff has to go after kids who might be toss ups for admission (or even unlikely to get in).  It's sort of like shooting in basketball; if you have too high a field goal percentage, it's indicative that you are not taking enough shots (I've seen similar logic applied to QB's who don't throw many interceptions; it suggests they are not throwing the ball downfield enough).  You have to take some chances with admissions, otherwise, you will have some students who you've given up on before they even have a chance.

I obviously feel bad for the kids who really want to come here, and end up getting dinged by admissions.  I think it is critical that the staff communicate well with these candidates, and tell them where they stand and what they need to do to get through (even if there is no hard and fast rule).

But the goal of the coaching staff should not be to ensure there are no admissions casualties; obviously they shouldn't waste the admissions office and the recruits' time.  But they should recruit kids, try to help them through the process, and admissions should make the decisions.  Unfortunately, some aren't going to go our way.

Agree 100%.  And in exchange the student must do his or her part.  Almost all do some don't.

Years ago a grandson of a coach committed and signed but not accepted at the end of his Sr year of HS. One year of Foothill then at Stanford.  But I haven't heard of this since.

Based on this story and the admission of Ben Edwards... Few programs are going to take three Safeties in a class, and it seems Reid and Edwards are considered better Safety prospects than Farrar.  Some project him as an OLB, but does he have the frame to add the weight needed for 3-4 OLB?  In other words, might there be another category added to the admissions tracker for "committed, admitted, but still not coming" ?  Could admission be denied to someone when the real issue is that a more coveted player becomes available?

Doesn't it seem really doubtful any kid would commit to Stanford so early, from the same high school as Henry Anderson, unless he was an admissions lock?  Whatever the case, I'm going out on a limb and suggesting Justin Reid will receive word of his admission on his visit this weekend, and sign with Stanford.

This seems to make some sense, but I hope it isn't what actually happened.  I don't like the idea of a kid getting rejected by admissions, but it is a lot more acceptable to me than coaches offering a kid, watching him for almost a year serve as the booster and unofficial recruiter of other young men to the program, and then pull back the offer less than a month before signing day, after other possible offers may have gone by the wayside for the student.  It certainly seems to not fit with the description of Shaw and the coaches provided by Trent Irwin's family.

And FWIW, I'd much rather live with an over-abundance of safeties for a season than to deal with recruits this way.  Coaches can find ways to get a great athlete on the field.  But I think you do something like that too many times and you can find your reputation damaged. Maybe you can do that at a football factory like USC or Alabama or Ohio State, but the number of high quality athletes who can pass muster and get into Stanford is so small, I think we would be wise to keep our reputations pristine so as not to alienate any potential recruit or their family.

Re: Class of 2015 - OutsiderFan - 01-14-2015

Agreed.

There is no way Deante Gray would have been denied other than by admissions given his speed/quickness.  Kirk Tucker was a believe able academic casualty too.  Farrar just doesn't make a whole lot of sense given the fact he went to the same high school as Henry Anderson and played a strong role selling Stanford on other recruits.  The only thing that makes logical sense for his denial is the fact two better prospects at his position were admitted and committed, but that would be a pretty unsavory reality, so it would be nice to know the truth.

The greatest unknown story in college sports is how unique and murky Stanford sports recruiting is.

Re: Class of 2015 - rudruff - 01-14-2015

If he were admitted I would think we would know about it. Recruits seem to understand that hurdle and most seem to announce their admission as well as their commitment. I think getting good players in is hard enough that you don't worry about being 1 over quota in a given year. Especially in an area where we have traditionally had trouble recruiting.

Re: Class of 2015 - StannyBoy - 01-14-2015

I haven't ever seen anyone say Reid is a better safety prospect than Farrar. He was certainly dinged by admissions. We probably need more than 2 safeties since Hoffpauir is probably gone. No way the coaches told Farrar sorry we don't have room for you. But you're correct that he could grow into a LB. 4-3 OLB, not a 3-4.

Re: Class of 2015 - donkey687 - 01-14-2015

I think it is highly unlikely that his scholie was pulled or that Shaw didn't push him through admissions.  We are going to have trouble filling out this class and will have extra scholarships. Farrarr is a high D-1 level prospect.  We take all the guys like that we can when we can.  Other than QB, you can play more than 1 at a time so no need to stress about taking three in a single class.

Yeah, at least both ESPN and Rivals have Farrar rated higher.  And considering we still don't have commitments from our other two DB prospects as well (Meeks and Buncom), there's no way this wasn't an admissions ding.  I don't really consider safeties and CBs at the high school level separate, Carter and Lyons both showed they can be moved around.  We currently have 1 committed DB in this class, we're better hope the other options still on the table come here.

Re: Class of 2015 - TrumpCard - 01-14-2015

The suggestion that Shaw dumped Farrar for football reasons is ludicrous.  Stanford is in dire need of high-caliber athletes who are academically qualified.  As noted elsewhere, Stanford is unlikely to fill its 85 scholarship slots next year.  Depending on who chooses to return and who is invited for a fifth year, Shaw may have just 3 scholarship DBs (including a converted QB) from the classes of '11, '12, and '13 left on the roster.  Compare that to Alabama, for example, which has 3 CB commits and 4 safety commits in this class.  If a 2-star safety decommitted, I would still say it is highly unlikely that Shaw dumped him for football reasons.  Make it a consensus 4-star safety who has been instrumental in recruiting other kids for this class, and I say you are paranoid.
