What a game. Rogers had at least one other game like this when every pitch was belt high across middle of the plate...and he got killed there also.  That's the fastest I've ever seen Crawford run.

2 up 12 to go.  9-3 should do it..  8-4 maybe.

Actually 1-up with 12 to go. MIL has already clinched which makes their last 3 games against LA meaningless. Padres are still in the thick of it so Giants have a tougher schedule on paper. I think SF owns the head2head tiebreaker so 9-3 might be enough. I don’t see LA going any worse than 10-2 unless the Padres suddenly catch fire.

If SF and LAD finish with the same record the tiebreaker will be a one game playoff.

Scherzer will slip on a wet bathroom floor and dislocate his shoulder. Kershaw will be kidnapped by eco terrorists demanding that LA County turn over Chavez Ravine to the Miwok Tribe. Betts will collide with the right field ball dude and suffer a lacerated kidney.

Giants win the division. Piece of cake.

Dodgers have Rockies, Diamondbacks, Padres and Brewers.  Giants also have Rockies, Diamondbacks and the Padres twice.

Injuries might play a part.  Dodgers have 20 on the injured list, Giants have 12.

Going to be close, i think...

Yeah, I wrote that with 13 left. Not enough fingers to count right….  Read today, Snell probably out till playoffs.  And given that they are. 3 1/2 out, that isn’t likely.  Hoping by last series they are  out of it and disinterested…..

I do not under any circumstances want to tie Dodgers and have one game playoff.  But im thinking at this point Giants are going to need to go 10-2.  Dodgers may lose two.  No more than that, though.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Leftcoast - 09-20-2021

As fans we tend to overestimate our rivals.   What was your impression of the Dodgers win rate one month ago?  Since Aug 20 the Dodgers have played 27 games.  During that time they've lost 8.  (1 to Cincy, 2 to SF, 2 to St Louis, 2 to Colorado, and 1 to the Mets)

The Dodgers are good and their staff is excellent but for them to suddenly go 10-2, while not impossible, would be out of character.   I suspect some of you expected the same sort of results a month ago and that didn't turn out.

We need to check our filters and adjust based on what we've seen this year.

(Dodgers schedule and results since Aug 20 below.  Excuse the poor formatting, I tried to insert a table and failed miserably.  Losses highlighted in bold.)

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - BostonCard - 09-20-2021

FWIW, fivethirtyeight predicts the Dodgers will go 104-58, which would mean 8-4 over their last 12 games.  Baseball being what it is, anything from 4-8 to 11-1 is reasonable, and you might occasionally get outcomes outside that range.

The Giants, FWIW are predicted to go 7-5, and both teams are expected to end 104-58.  Given that they give each team exactly even odds, and I would expect the Dodgers to be favored in a single game match-up, that means the Giants are slightly more likely to end up ahead of the Dodgers than vice versa.

Dodgers beat Colorado, 5-4.  Giants and Padres are tied, 5-5, in the bottom of the 8th.

Not any more.  6-5 Gigantes.  The torture and the wins continue.

Cheers,

Rockies had a golden chance tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 8th, bases loaded with two out and Charlie Blackmon up. Alas, ‘‘twas not to be.

The supreme torture would be for both the Dodgers and Giants to win out. Dodger fans would be so wonderfully distraught.

What an awesome game. Belt out at the plate no the ball is on the ground
That DP close at second Crawford is magical Rogers at first out game over
Wow

I still remember’93. Giants win 103 and don’t make playoffs (no wild card at time). Braves win 104. Rockies first year of existence.  They go 0-13 vs Braves.  Including losing all 4 the last weekend. Giants came in tied that weekend. Had 4 in LA. Won first 3. Then Solomon Torres…. By the way, besides Colorado, SD helped Braves by giving away Fred McGriff to Braves at deadline.  He went nuts second half.

I never expect help from the flipping Rockies. As for Blackmon.  He looks ridiculous.  And has one of the weakest walk up songs in Baseball.

Wow

Yep.  All after a weak performance from Gausman.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 09-22-2021

Great game.  Three weak singles that baaaarely get the hitter to first base.  Belt races home with the winning run...he knocks the ball out of the catcher's glove, otherwise he would have been out.  In the bottom half of the ninth, Rogers is pitching, Crawford has the only error of the game on a ground ball right at him.  Ends in an awkwardish double play with Belt getting the ball out of his glove slowly and Rogers not stretching for the ball as he covers first base.  Padres challenge both out calls at first and second, lose both.  Exquisite torture.

Giants now 98-53.  98 wins is the ninth-highest number of regular season wins in the 138 year history of the franchise, with 12 games left to play in the regular season.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 09-22-2021

The challenge was decided in a record eight seconds. Machado smoked the ball to Belt who stayed with it and got the lead runner. Getting the out at first was a bonus with Rogers almost getting smoked by Craw’s laser to first.

Incredible game.  I put it in Top 5 or 6 Ws this season (and that's saying something).  Thought for sure the inability to score with bases juiced and 1 out in T1 was going to come back and bite them.  Also liked to see the Giants score runs with non-hits, thanks to good situational hitting.  (Sac Flies from Posey and Yaz).  Didn't like to see Gausman struggle.  He has completely lost his ace abilities from earlier in the year.

Question:  did the ball actually ever get to the catcher's glove on Belt's run?  I watched the replays and never once saw the ball actually in the glove.  I mean, that's certainly possible, or maybe even probable, but Belt arrived at same time the ball did and all I actually saw on TV was the ball trickling down from Belt's upper body to behind home plate as he slid across home plate.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - BobK - 09-22-2021

I think Belt’s elbow hit the mitt. As did one of the announcers.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - BobK - 09-22-2021

This should be a trivia question. Who is the Giants starting pitcher tonight ? Scott Kazmir

His AAA record

Some numbers…

None of the three SF singles in the 9th topped 80mph.  Machado’s double play ball left the bat at 112mph.  Only three Giants’ batted balls all season have exceeded 112.

One overlooked key was not using a PR for Belt in the ninth (another Kapler move that went against the grain but worked out nicely). Had the Giants done so, it is unlikely Belt’s replacement at 1B in the bottom of the ninth would have fielded Machado’s shot (someday Belt has gotta win a Gold Glove - he is an outstanding first baseman).

Why would one of the announcers be on field? ;)

+1.

And tip of the cap to Machado, who had a monster game:  2 dingers, almost a third, and then a 112 mph shot that Belt was able to turn into a DP, even after having a hard time corralling the bullet off the bat.  And Tatis is a special player, too, offensively and defensively - even though I don't want him to win MVP.  That Padres lineup looks awfully good, and I'm thinking Bochy may be managing them next season.

Agreed.  What I'm wondering is if the ball was even in the mitt when contact made.  I just haven't seen that in the films.

P.S.  I highly recommend MLB.com highlights for getting great recap of big plays in any game (and in remarkably high def, to boot).
