RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 12-19-2023

Actually Harvey practiced as an Opp all year. That said we do have scholarship room. We also have 4 2025 commits.
DeMaria could be considered by Hambly as an Opp

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - MSG1716 - 12-19-2023

I love picking up Caroline Jerevicius if we can.  Would be nice to add the daughter of a pro football player (Joe - starred on a super bowl Tampa Bay squad) to a team with the daughter of a pro basketball player (Miner) and the grand niece of a top pro baseball player (Oglivie).  Have to think athletes raised by pro athletes who go into sports would be competitive and tough.

As for 2024, I do not agree that a FF is out of the question.  We have experience where it matters most, the setter and libero, and 3 talented newcomers (Harvey, Blyashov and Kurt) who will have a year of practice against top competition under their belt, plus a top recruit MB (Andrews) and Francis returning.  That's a good starting lineup to me.  I'm hoping for a top 10 team that will be ready to strut their stuff by tourney time.

Malia Tufuga in the transfer portal.  She must have one covid year left.  She has a Stanford degree so quite understandable.  Good luck to her.

The very good Washington State coach has left for West Virginia

That was my fear if left out of a major conference

Viewership for championship match between Texas and Nebraska:

https://volleyballmag.com/record-tv-ratings-for-ncaa-volleyball-final-122023/

...the 2-hour, 30-minute show was watched by a total-average viewership of 1.691 million...

A particularly encouraging note for potential advertisers was that 51% of the TV audience on Sunday was female...

...peak quarter-hour did log 2.1 million viewers...

Back before Stanford joined the ACC there were some here advocating for picking up a few Mountain West teams to form a new PAC conference or floundering around for a few years as an independent.  It may have worked for football.  It would have been a disaster for Stanford WVB.

The WSU players are starting to pile into the transfer portal.  No surprise to anyone.  WSU will probably struggle for years to get back to top 25 level.  For whatever reason vb high school players from hotbeds in SoCal, Texas, Florida, etc aren't interested in WSU.

Omitted the <sarc> tag on that last sentence.

Megan McClure-Jamison signed with Atlanta in new Pro league

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 12-23-2023

6'5" MB Maggie Mendelson is in the transfer portal.   She has two more years of eligibility.  Hambly recruited her but she chose Nebraska.  IMO she is the only player currently in the portal who is viable for transferring to Stanford and helping where depth is needed.  The fact that Hambly recruited her would indicate she has the academics.

Even if Hambly was interested, I doubt Stanford will get her.  She would have to fill out a transfer application, write an essay, submit grade transcripts, etc. and then wait months for a decision.  I can't see a player doing that unless she had a very long term plan to transfer.

not so sure the timeline is months given the relatively short time from entering the portal to being admitted for football transfers last year.

That would be helpful if Admissions puts recruited athletes wanting to transfer in on top of the pile of applications.

I just recalled one reason that steered her away from Stanford was she insisted on playing WVB and WBB.  Apparently that's not feasible.  I don't know if she would still insist on playing WBB.  If so then it won't work out for Stanford.

FWIW she just started following Kami Miner.

This has been covered before. Grad admissions is actually very decentralized - a central office does receive applications but ultimately, admissions decisions are made by departmental faculty review committees. Generally, application packets should have already been prepared and/or submitted by now through March, depending on the department, no exceptions - you snooze, you lose. We'll see - maybe she had/has her act together. BTW, don't get me wrong - I would love have her on the team, if she's academically qualified.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 12-23-2023

I didn't make this clear in my original post about Mendelson. She's applying as an undergrad.  She currently is a sophomore.  Has two years of eligibility. She would be the first undergrad transfer into Stanford WVB ever so the odds are probably pretty long, but the times they are a-changing.

Well, back in the day, Wiggins (at least she got on the team poster) and Folkl.  And the MB whose name I keep forgetting who subbed in at the post at lot (Sara...?)

I think there might be some rule about which team counts the scholie, but wouldn't Hambly and TVD have the power to work something out if the athlete was at the Wiggins/Folkl level?

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 12-24-2023

Sara McGee played WBB after finishing her WVB season when Stanford had post injuries. Wiggins practiced with the volleyball team when she arrived as a Frosh but never played in a game. Qwerty and I have the same poster.
It took 6 weeks or a little less from the time Kern entered the portal until she announced committed to Stanford softball

Since the scholarship counts against WBB, I would think the player would have to be a significant contributor to WBB, similar to how Wiggins/Folkl were both major WBB players. Seems like Mendelssohn is a better WVB player than WBB, but wants to play both which makes the scholarship math for WBB harder.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 12-24-2023

She had a couple of very good games last season WBB. It’s a long shot. How does this affect the recruitment of Harvey for instance. We have scholarship room in both sports
Thanks on the of two sports WBB counts as the scholarship

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 12-24-2023

I agree it's a long shot.   I don't want to jeopardize Taylor Harvey coming to Stanford.  There's so many unknowns but it's entertaining to speculate during the off-season when there's nothing else to do in college vb.   Don't know if Hambly is interested in her.  Don't know if she is interested in Stanford.  Not even really sure if Taylor Harvey is interested in Stanford.    My overwhelming concern is for next year with the existing roster if Francis were to have an injury.

The only "fact" stoking the debate is Kami Miner started following Mendelson on Instagram.  Why would she do that if there wasn't some interest in Mendelson for vb?  I doubt Miner would go on Instagram without first checking with Hambly.  She has to know that's going to create rumors among fans and even other DI coaching staffs.

From other sports message boards I know there are other coaches pursuing Mendelson.  If she doesn't announce something within the next two weeks, I would start to get a little optimistic.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - MSG1716 - 12-24-2023

WBB has 2 bigs coming in next year so not sure if Tara would want another.  But ESPN had her ranked out of HS as the #32 recruit and the 6th best post player, higher than any of our incoming players.  FYI, in WVB, she was Prep Volleyball's #2 overall recruit.  Of course, she didn't start for Nebraska this year.
