Is Thairo still playing? Early on last season he was one of few semi-power hitters on the team. While league defensive stats place him in the lower half, I thought he made all the easy plays and often came up with the spectacular. I didn't understand the stats. A pitch hit his hand, and his season went down hill from there.
With Adames at ss, and Fitzgerald at 2b, and ??? in center, we aren't exactly "strong up the middle".

I think the jury's out on how strong the Giants will be up the middle. Bailey earned the Gold Glove, and he's very young. His next 6-8 years will be his best. He cut WAY back on his errors from 2023 to 2024, which augurs well. He throws out a very high percentage of runners, which chills other runners who want to take extra bases. His first half hitting was incredible, Posey-like. His second half hitting was the third worst of all position players. Hopefully another year will give him more strength.
Adames led the league in Rtot in 2019 with 19, and in 2022 and 2023 he had a high positive Rtot, 9 and 11. Last year, he was a -8. He's rarely under water and he's been between 3.1 and 4.9 WAR for a full season his entire career. So it was a breakout defensive year to the downside, but a breakout upside year on offense. Adames career Rtot is 29, Brandon Crawford's was 32. Crawford's fielding Rtot was positive until he turned age 30, when he won his late career gold glove (2021) his Rtot was negative, -2. Crawford had incredible range, more than Adames, but Adames was/is a better hitter.
Fitzpatrick at second? Depends on which one shows up. He had first half/second half numbers similar to Bailey. His overall line .280/.334/.497/.831 was excellent. He's a subpar shortstop, but had positive Rtot at 2B, which seems to be a more natural position for him.
Jung Hoo Lee...could have a breakout season. His projection is higher than any Giant except Bailey, Adames and Chapman at .294/.351/.438/.789. His range is above average, his arm isn't the strongest, he didn't have a single error in 80 chances. If he can keep from running into outfield fences, I think he'll be better than solid. McCrea will be an interesting backup, if he learns how to hit.
As for Estrada, he's currently a free agent. I think his problems were in his head. His 2024 was completely unlike his 2021-2023. He wasn't a great fielder early on, but he led the league in range factor in 2023...and then his 2024, he regressed, quite badly. He's a purely natural 2B, he was a disaster at the other positions. I recall reading that he started swinging at balls outside the strike zone...a lot.
Conclusion? I think we're going to be strong up the middle.

Estrada was picked up by the sad sack Rockies. I actually think he's going to have a really good season for them.

I agree re Bailey and have hopes for Lee. I should have been more succinct. I'm Missouri on Adames and Fitzgerald.

Supposedly, Japanese pitching phenom Roki Sasaki prefers a smaller, mid-market team...at least that's what his agent, Joel Wolfe, said. Japanese media haven't been kind to Sasaki because he wants to transition so early, at age 23.
Detroit recently signed Kenta Maeda, and they'd had Hideo Nomo and Masao Kida before that (back in 2000).
Not sure if the SF Giants count as a mid-market team. Their media tends to be hands-off these days.

Also Flaherty, Manaea, Buehler, Pivetta and Seattle may be shopping Castillo.
Manaea looks to be going back to Mets. He and Pivetta turned down qualifying offers. That makes them more “expensive.” Burnes also comes with that. But he’s elite so not really an issue.

2025 batting order as suggested by today's interview with Bob Melvin and Pavlovic. Melvin likes the L/R/L/R dynamic:
1. LaMonte Wade, L
2. Willy Adames, R
3. Jung Hoo Lee, L
4. Matt Chapman, R
5. Heliot Ramos, R
6. Patrick Bailey, S
7. Tyler Fitzgerald, R
8. Mike Yastrzemski, L (last three interchangeable depending upon pitcher)
9. DH depending upon pitcher. Might be Encarnacion, Goldschmidt, Carlos Santana, Flores, Schmitt, Sabol, Matos, McCray, Meckler.
Sabol was 2nd on the team in OPS+, btw. Maybe not the worst idea to find a place for him to play.

If the DH is called to serve a defensive position during the game, they retain their spot in the batting order, but they lose the status of DH and the pitcher is then placed in the lineup slot that was previously occupied by the defensive player whom the DH replaced in the field, and the team cannot then use another DH for the remainder of the game.
A team must select their DH before the game begins (as listed on the lineup cards provided to the umpires before the game), and if the team doesn't select a DH, they're not permitted to use a DH for the entire game. If the pitcher plays another defensive position, the team is no longer allowed to use a DH.

Anthony Santander. Upside: 44 home runs, 102 RBI, All Star for Orioles last year, switch hitter, cut down on strikeouts, OPS+ of 134. Neutral: 30 years old, decent right fielder. Negative: low OBP (.308) and low BA (.235).
Jeff Passan and others note that about half of MLB teams want power hitting corner outfielders, but thinks Santander is a tough sell and could maybe be had for cheap. He made $7.4 million as an Oriole. 8 years, $150 mms., my guess.

Of the remaining players who declined a QO, Burnes is SF’s first choice. If he signs with the Giants, I think we can forget any other players who turned down QO. And yes, I am optimistic Burnes will be heading to the Bay Area.
