RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Hulk01 - 05-21-2019

Respective World Amateur and NCAA womne Rankings. (NCAA Final match play record in parenthesis)
(2-2) Andrea Lee 4, 2
(2-2) Albane Valenzuela 5, 17
Aline Krauter 167, 66
(0-2) Ziyi Wang NR, 189
(0-2) Mika Liu NR, 124

(0-1) Jaravee Boonchant 25, 4
Gina Kim 58, 38
(0-1) Ana Belac 64, 45
(0-0-1) Virginian Elena Carta 106, 50
Miranda Wang NR, 148’

Duke’s team is imported:
Boonchant (Thailand),  Carta (Italy), Belac (Slovenia), Wang (China).  The lone American, Freshman Miranda Kim, is from North Carolina.

The draw will be interesting.
Walker cannot have faith in Wang and may toss her to the top of the order
and bank on Stanford wins from three of her remaining four.
The guess, however, is that Walker will demonstrate her faith in Lee
and play her order straight, leading Lee out against Boonchant.

This is a Valenzuela course; she can beat anyone and everyone here.

PS: Wait 'til next year.
One of Brooke Seay and Lei Ye will seize the fifth spot
and the other could grab the fourth away from Liu.
And Calista Reyes, if she can up her game over the summer,
could push for a spot, too.

Note:
Admittedly by tiny margins,
Stanford scored better than Duke
on two of the three days of stroke play.

BC

Yeah, our matchup will be with Duke unless USC’s Garvey hits a hole-in-one on the par 4 18th.

BC

Nae problemos, BC.  I've probably played more match play golf than other players on this forum at scratch (i.e. no handicaps) and I can guarantee you that the last thing that Duke wanted to see is Stanford waiting for them in the quarter finals.  At this level all players can beat all others each and every time they play, and the odds for a +5HCP player losing to a +4HCP are very close to 50/50.  It's all about heart.

The matchups today:
(0-2) Ziyi Wang NR, 189 (+21)
(2-0-1) Virginian Elena Carta 106, 50 (+11)

Gina Kim 58, 38 (+4)

(0-2) Mika Liu NR, 124 (+13)
(0-1) Ana Belac 64, 45 (+5)

(2-2) Andrea Lee 4, 2 (+13)
(0-1) Jaravee Boonchant 25, 4 (+2)

Aline Krauter 167, 66 (+4)
Miranda Wang NR, 148 (+21)

The girls with the most guts will win.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - BobK - 05-21-2019

We are down 3-1-1 thru holes 5/6/7

Quote:Walker cannot have faith in Wang and may toss her to the top of the order and bank on Stanford wins from three of her remaining four.

As Hulk observed, Wang is the sacrificial lamb at the top of the order. She is 3 down through 8.

Valenzuela is 1 down through 7
Liu is 1 down through 6
Lee is 1 up through 6
Krauter is all square through 5

Play has been suspended because of threatening weather.

If Wang is the sacrificial lamb, wouldn’t it have made more sense for Walker to cast her name after Duke had announced one of its better players? From the rankings, it looks as though she’s facing Duke’s fourth best player.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2019

Stanford has gotten almost no contribution from the 5 slot in the NCAAs.
2015 - Quirine Eijkenboom - 0-3
2016 - Sierra Kersten - 1-2
2017 - Madie Chou - 0-2
2018 - Ziyi Wang - 0-2
2019 - Ziyi Wang - ?

Puts a lot of pressure on everyone else when you are spotting your opponents 20% of the points.

As the higher seeded team, Duke could choose to go first or defer and let Stanford cast the first name. It is not clear what choice Duke's coach Dan Brooks made. He may have deferred in which case Anne Walker threw out Ziyi Wang first.

The most interesting decision Coach Walker made today is to put Aline Krauter in the anchor position. That is a lot of confidence in a freshman who has been solid but not spectacular all season (but who just finished her best tournament of the year, 10th place in the medal competition).

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2019

Play is expected to resume at 1:15 pm central/11:15 am pacific

Update - that plan has changed. Lightning still in the area.

Think they'll restart play today? If so, any ideas when?

This is the thread I am following for updates - https://twitter.com/collegegolf/lists/golfweek-writers

Note the photos of flooding at last year's host Karsten Creek. Someone was kayaking on the driving range.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - 2006alum - 05-21-2019

it's almost as if there's no part of this country where you could fairly reliably predict there will be at most a small chance of inclimate weather disrupting play over multiple days at this time of year.... Oh wait. Too bad there's such a bias against the West Coast...

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - ColoradoTree - 05-21-2019

Three matches are A/S - Valenzuela (thru 9), Liu (8), and Lee (7). Krauter is 1 down (6), and Wang is still 3 down (9).

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2019

Stanford rallying on the back 9. Match is 2-2-1.

Wang 2 down through 14
Valenzuela 2 down through 13
Liu 2 up through 12
Lee all square through 12
Krauter 1 up through 11

Lee and Boonchant (both just named 1st team All American earlier today) are playing a great match. Both are -3 so far (understanding that these are not true scores because of conceded shots).

Lee 3 putted the 14th to go 1 down. That seems to be the match that Stanford must win, although Valenzuela just won 2 holes in a row to square her match.

Wang 2 down with 2 to play ---> Wang chipped in for birdie on 17! She is 1 down going to 18
Valenzuela all square with 3 to play
Liu 1 up with 4 to play
Lee 1 down with 4 to play
Krauter 2 up with 5 to play

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - StanfordMatt - 05-21-2019

Looks like Wang read the board during the weather delay and took offense to being dubbed the sacrificial lamb. Down 3 with 3 to play, she’s on the verge of forcing extra holes.

Wang is +7 today but only 1 down. Her opponent drove into a penalty area on 18 then stung a rescue club up about 20 feet away sitting 3. But Wang split the fairway then nailed an approach 15 feet in 2. This match is going extra holes unless Carta drains her putt. She did not. They go to the 19th hole.

Valenzuela and Kim are all square going to 18.

Meanwhile Liu bogeyed 16 to fall back to all square.

Lee rolled in a 20 footer for birdie on 15. But Duke made one as well to halve the hole. Lee is 1 down with 3 to play.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - BostonCard - 05-21-2019

There it is!  Wang came back from three down with three holes to go!

BC

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2019

Here is where we stand.

Wang is all square on the 19th hole
Valenzuela is all square playing the 18th hole
Liu is all square on the 17th
Lee is 1 down playing 16
Krauter just lost 15 to a birdie. She is 1 up playing 16.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - BostonCard - 05-21-2019

SC and Arizona are 2-2-1 and the match comes down to this last hole (or extra holes).
