Vanderbilt won the 16th hole to go 1 up with two holes to go, but A&M answered on 17, and it's tied now going into extra holes.

I'll defer to the golf experts, but it's interesting to see how much more closely A&M matched our stroke play rounds than Vanderbilt did. We were 5 strokes better than A&M in the first round, even in the second round, 2 strokes better in the third round, and 4 strokes worse in the fourth round. We were 16 strokes better than Vanderbilt in the first round, 1 stroke better in the second round, 12 strokes worse in the third round, and 27 strokes worse in the fourth round.

On the other half of the bracket, forget what I said about SMU hanging in there against Oklahoma State. That was true enough on the easier front 9, but the back 9 is separating the wheat from the chaff, as the Cowboys have booked two wins and lead by 2 strokes in two others.

Texas-Oklahoma is close, with each team winning (or looking primed to win) two matches, and everything resting on the fourth match, where it's tied through 15.

It's Vandy in 19 holes, so that's who we'll play.

Here's an example of why it's tough to predict results in the match play rounds.

Will Gordon for Vandy is a senior All American and the 10th ranked amateur in the world. He was 0-3 in NCAA match play. But thanks to a clutch 15 foot putt on 18 for par and a miracle par on the 19th after driving into the penalty area, he beat his A&M opponent who 3 putted.

related mini-rant: I think the graphics by GolfStat are poor. No distinction between the players' scores on each hole and the running score in the match (just separate them with a thicker line). No indication of what is par on each hole (doesn't matter in match play I know, but still of interest in assessing or describing the scores, as my error illustrates). The team score at the top of each team match does not distinguish between completed matches and ongoing ones; I'd rather see just the completed match points up at the top (compare, e.g., to tennis: when we win the doubles point, it would be odd to see a team match score of 5-2 just because we won 4 first sets in singles and our opponents won 2). Completed matches are not visually distinguished from ongoing ones, you have to read the writing to learn if the match is over or not. I also don't like signifying birdies with a red color and bogeys with green: green generally means good in our culture and red not good. OK, end of rant, sorry.

I thought he was cooked after that drive, but it goes to show that Yogi Berra had it right, It ain't over 'til its over.

Pairings are now out. Gordon paired with Snyder at 5. Our order is Salinda, Shimp, Wu, Daulet, and Snyder. Vandy order is Martin, Augenstein, Davenport, Ott, and Gordon.

I hear you, but there are no across all sports standards that I know of at this point. I believe if you watch any PGA tournament scores posted in red are good, generally signifying birdies. So I think Golfstat is just going along with PGA convention, but then I may be wrong about the entire thing. This is important because of the additional experience with match play it provides. Unfortunately the women will not be joining them this year.

I wondered if Stanford was in good enough shape to handle all the walking and golf. Don't worry about that any more. If they can handle a workout routine put together by a former Marine, my guess they are in better shape than all the other guys.

With the caveat that it is extremely early in this semifinal vs. Vanderbilt, things seem to be going reasonably well so far:

Salinda up 2 through 7
Shimp down 1 through 6
Wu up 2 through 5
Tuleubayev up 3 through 4
Snyder up 2 through 4

Match play is a funny animal; Wu double-bogeyed #4 but won the hole because his opponent triple-bogeyed it.

Still leading 4-1-0, but Shimp drops another hole and the leads for Wu and Snyder are both down to 1:

Salinda up 3 through 8
Shimp down 2 through 7
Wu up 1 through 6
Tuleubayev up 3 through 5
Snyder up 1 through 5

But Tuleubayev is trying to make you look good, Hulk!

I remember when the women won it a few years ago, the coach had put them through some very tough conditioning in the fall, telling them they'd need it in the heat and humidity of the NCAAs. They didn't like it but it obviously worked!

Is there video of the coaches picking the pairings? With the caveat that there is a great deal of golf left to play and it's the brutal back 9, too, Coach Ray has to be feeling good about the choices he made so far.

Also, Texas is leading OK State 3-1-1 though it is early and all but one match are within a hole of each other.

Thanks! What was that look Coach Ray gave to the Vanderbilt coach before putting Snyder against Gordon? Was he surprised at the ordering of Ott and Gordon?
