I'm not terribly familiar with the SWBB "press corps," as it were. Is there a story behind junior correspondent Pepper?

I bet there is, but I don't know it.  I've wondered if she is a coach's child with an interest in sports journalism.  She has been at most of the press conferences and always asks very careful, scripted questions, as if she had written them out in advance.  Some quite good questions, actually.  But I too would like to know that story :)

I choose Option C, for us to outscore Oregon 28-14 in the 3rd quarter and outscore Oregon 23-15 in the fourth quarter too. That shouldn't be an impossible outcome.

But if I had to choose between what actually happened and your alternative, I would choose yours. I rather end the game on a high note rather than slog through the last ten minutes almost painfully. Far from me to challenge a Hall of Fame coach with 1,100 plus victories and her preferred method of finishing games. I am also not arguing it doesn't work, but that grind-it-out, trade points from time method to end a game can be very difficult as a fan to watch and it can somewhat leave a sour taste in one's month even though the W is most important. I rather shut the door and leave no doubt, plus it allows the reserves to come in and play and reduces injury risk to our starters.

I’m in the minority I guess but winning the game is the definition of ending on a high point.

RE: WBB: Stanford 70 Oregon 63 - 81alum - 01-08-2021

I watched the first replay and to be fair to Tara, she was not playing kill-the-clock from our last basket at about the 8 minute mark until the end the game.  For the first few minutes we were taking shots--just missing them.  Lacie hoisted up a very quick trey and missed and probably got a talking to--those long rebounds are the stuff of which comebacks are made.  I sensed the kill-the-clock strategy only for the last few minutes.  Coming as it did after a string of missed shots gave a very odd impression.  We just beat our toughest opponent and did not score a basket in the final 8+ minutes of the game.  An odd feeling.  But as Bob says--a win :)

Agreed.  We had good looks, good shots, they just rolled the wrong way.   The late end game was different, with ugly turnovers by Haley and Lacie', including her second bad inbounds throw.

I know that it may sound contradictory to what I posted earlier as I actually agree that I thought I didn't see much of the killing the clock strategy either. I just latched onto someone bringing that strategy up. My more pertinent point is that we made mistakes that we shouldn't have which contributed to Oregon making a run and the game ended up closer than it should have been.

As I earlier said, the win is the most important, but it would have been better if we have held onto that lead. However, that shouldn't over shadow the fact that this game showed that our depth is amazingly good. We might have had a better starting five, but I think that this is the deepest roster in terms of talent for as long as I followed the team for the last fifteen-ish years.

Oregon switched up defenses nicely.

Against zone, I'd have Haley or Prechtel at the FT line area (and if they're both in, then put Prechtel out at 3 point line) and then have Brink or Belibi in the low block.  You need a threat from high post area, and preferably one who can also pass to open three shooter of the post getting position in the low block.  Brink can also shoot from there, but her low post moves are quite good, too.  At one point in 2H today, pretty sure I saw Belibi with ball at high post and the Oregon D sagged - that is not ideal personnel placing, imo.

It looks like Oregon plays multiple zones - I think 2-3, 1-3-1 and even a box-and-1. So the players (and coaches) have to recognize which zone it is in order to know how best to attack it. Early in the half court offense, the players need to make the zone react enough to reveal which one it is - dribbling at the top doesn’t do it. The coaches must have a strategy for this; despite our complaints, maybe it was better executed today since we weren’t as completely stifled as in previous games against the Ducks (we did win, after all). Having Haley back (she missed two of the games last season) certainly made a difference.

RE: WBB: Stanford 70 Oregon 63 - Hulk01 - 01-08-2021

Agree: Haley was the difference in the game, easily the most effective player on the court.  A special talent.

Oregon's zone defensew also encouraged longer possessions for us because we had first had to identify eadh one and then move the ball to try to probe it.  A gambling woman-to-woman defense might have gotten the Ducks more time but wasn't a trade worth making in balance.

I missed the chalk talk before the game, but found it after the game:

Kate basically reviews the season, game by game.  No deep insights into strategy or tactics.

I too, was wondering who was behind the squeaky voice that elicited such a broad smile from Anna Wilson. A quick google search came up with a 9 year old budding basketball journalist named Pepper Persely.

RE: WBB: Stanford 70 Oregon 63 - Hulk01 - 01-09-2021

One more observation on Tara slowing the offense down with leads:
Lacie's deep three point attempt at around 4:45 left in the game came with 20 second left on the clock.

RE: WBB: Stanford 70 Oregon 63 - UltimateCard - 01-09-2021

In comparing box scores with last year’s losses, our shooting percentages were not appreciably better yesterday, which suggests we didn’t improve against their zones for the game. I haven’t rewatched the 4th quarter to see if our abysmal scoring was against their zone or player-to-player defense (or both). What won the game for the Cardinal was much better performance on the defensive end - the Ducks shot below 40% yesterday whereas last year they were 48% or more. Losing three WNBA first rounders, and Boley’s foul trouble, might have something to do with that. Yet, we were without one of our better defenders. Both teams will get better before the next matchup.

RE: WBB: Stanford 70 Oregon 63 - BosCard - 01-09-2021

I know a win is a win.  And against a top 10ish team that destroyed us three times last year.  And without Lexie and zone-buster Jump.  And not really at home since this team is always "on the road".  But, I found the game frustrating because I think we are a better team than we showed and could/should have won by a bigger margin.  Except for her free throws and a couple of nice shots in the lane, Williams really struggled.  0 for 6 from three and 6 turnovers.

One of the big surprises of the season is how well we are doing with such poor 3 point shooting (34%).  You would think that the emergence of Belibi on the inside and Jones driving/passing would lead to a higher 3 point percentage.  And I think/hope that will be the case as the season progresses.  And hopefully Williams and Lacie get out of their 3 point shooting slumps.  They have combined to take 84 out of our 233 three pointers yet are shooting at 28% and 25% respectively.  In contrast, I am very very happy to see Wilson shoot the three at such a high percentage (54%).  And she has done that consistently over multiple games.  Who would have thought that with a decently large number of games and shots that Wilson would be shooting a three point percentage higher than Williams and Lacie combined.

Thanks for this - I had the same question watching the post-game interviews. Here's Pepper's 23-minute interview of Haley: https://thenext.substack.com/p/she-got-next-episode-14-haley-jones. Maybe Ros G-O can mentor Pepper in both playing and reporting on basketball!

Shout out to Krista Blunt and Mary Murphy for the excellent job they do announcing our games.
They actually follow the flow of the game, know the players, and seem basically unbiased.
