Stanford played the 4th quarter pretty well against OSU, no?

After a game filled with muggings and non-call after non-call, I half expected the refs to be inconsistent and to call Williams for the foul on Paupau on this play.  Watching the replay I think she deserved it--Williams shoves/pushes/bodies Paupau but fortunately the fall was slightly delayed so the imbalancing act was not too obvious.

But to have called that a foul after letting so much else go all game would have been unjust--like the ump who never calls corner strikes until the bottom of the 9th inning.

I don't really think it was a foul on Ki. Ki bumped Paopao a little, then Paopao put out an arm and tried to push off. It looked to me like Paopao lost her balance on the push off.

I agree with the sentiment.  But does that mean that us sports fans who have followed Stanford for decades are each about 900 years old?

RE: WBB: Stanford 63 Oregon 61 - chimera - 02-15-2021

I will not comment much on the officiating.  They let them play for better or worse. I think Oregon took better advantage of that until the bitter end, when we had to be very aggressive on defense and were.  I think the zone bothered us more than anything, that and Oregon being so hot from three.  Williams was very good.  She dibbled into trouble a few times but hard to blame her when nothing else was really working on offense and she had to make something happen or try to.  Brink was fine in the big minutes but I do think she got doubled more in the second half, which made her a bit more hesitant to make her moves.  Defense was ok.  We let them get too many threes.  Oregon is very tough when they hit threes (most teams are, I know) because they can space the floor so much and have good inside players.  they did make some contested threes.

Lexie really help late with rebounds, steals, kept them from extending the lead when they snuck ahead.  I would assume Lacie was in for Anna just for more size and length on defense out there.  Hope Anna is ok from the fall she took.  She did play after that so I think she probably is ok.

Way too many turnovers.  Some was on the refs, who called no fouls so everyone piled on for tie ups.

Two things concern me most of all.  Well three I guess.  First is the zone offense needs a lot of work and fast.  Second is we need more from other posts than Brink.  Belibi has disappeared after playing well for half the season.  Some is Brink playing well and taking playing time, some seems to be a slump.  We need her back playing well and we need Prechtel back so we have a strong rotation.  Third is we need Jones to be less Jekyll and Hyde.  When she doesn't turn the ball over she can be amazing, but she has too many avoidable turnovers and when she gets in TO mode, her offense evaporates.  She is too talented to have that many unforced errors and/or forced shots at bad times.

All in all, big road win against a very good team that was hot from three, which is their forte, so can't complain too much, though losing that big lead was painful.

RE: WBB: Stanford 63 Oregon 61 - petersalas - 02-15-2021

I don’t think he meant we literally want to see close games.. I think he means that we want to see them pull out a win in a close game. Because that’s the positive I’m taking from the game. They were unable to do that against Colorado or UCLA but they were able to do it today. That should be helpful down the stretch and come tournament time.

RE: WBB: Stanford 63 Oregon 61 - 81alum - 02-15-2021

My takeaways from this game:

1) the minutes played in a close game against top competition shows exactly who Tara believes are our best players.  Williams, Brink, Lexie, and Jones essentially played the whole game.  Not much of a rotation at all.  Wilson, Jump, and Lacie split a position.  Belibi played 4 minutes.  Our bench had 3 points.

2) Early in the season we thought Williams went through a slump or two.  No longer.  She was 8/15 today for 20 points.  And many of those shots were difficult floaters coming at moments when no one else seemed to be able to get a quality shot off.  I really, really hate to think of the team without her next year.

3) Despite her great offense, Williams had 5 turnovers and Jones had 6.  If either one of them had been able to hold onto the ball better, the game would not have been so close.  Jones in particular has had turnover issues both last year and this year.  She leads the team in turnovers.  Some of it is her aggressive passes inside to teammates, but not all of it.  Today she had several unforced errors.  I am not sure why this is.

4) Offensively, Oregon is probably the only other team in the Pac 12 like us--a multiheaded monster with multiple players who can shoot well.  Mikesell had not been doing so well of late but she led them tonight.  I'd rather not play them again since they are tough to scout.  Better to play an Arizona in the tournament which might technically be a better team but is more predictable.  But we have Arizona once more in the regular season first.

I agree on your points; it will be nice to have our post depth back. We were lucky that Brink did not get into foul trouble

RE: WBB: Stanford 63 Oregon 61 - pefloresjr - 02-15-2021

I think the issue with Lacie's free throw shooting is the result of having to go on the road and not getting much practice time.  The Hulls and many other shooters are often gym rats who are in the gym everyday putting a lot of shots.  We haven't been able to do that this year until the last week or so.  It's been a big worry for me.  That same problem has impacted our performance against zone defenses.  It takes time and practice in practice to work through the options and responses to the point where they are natural.  We have done fine against less talented teams playing zone but are not yet completely up to the task against longer, quicker teams.  I hope and think that will improve over the end of the season.  We are talented and aren't bothered much by teams playing full court press defenses on us anymore despite the lack of practice.  I hope we conquer the zone problems more fully by tournament time.

It was definitely tough to watch the lead disappear but I think Oregon is really good and a tough match up for us because we can't just shut down their few great players, they have options.  Great to see our team respond to losing the lead and stepping up to get the road win.  I was super worried about this game.  Don't forget that Oregon got to spend the weekend resting and prepping for playing us while we had to play a really competitive game against OSU.  Given the circumstances, this was a great win.  Let's head back home, take care of the Arizona schools, and Beat Cal!

Cheers,
Pete F.

Funniest moment of the game was late in the 3rd when Anna Wilson was fouled by Sabaly on an inbounds play but they called a jump ball or some ridiculous thing.  I forgot that I was on the phone with my Mom and yelled "F you!" at the refs.  My wife was saying something else to my Mom, who was on speaker, at the time and I think she missed it or just chose to ignore it because it didn't make any sense in our conversation.  Wilson was fouled there without a doubt but the team was able to overcome all that and get the win.  That skill will be needed in the tournament.

Stanford played the 4th quarter pretty well against OSU, no?

For our loss to Colorado we had 17 in the 1st and 14 in the 4th.
For our loss to UCLA we had 20 in the 1st and 14 in the 4th.
For all games we had 19.6 in the 1st and 18.3 in the 4th.
And our opponents had 12.1 in the 1st and 14.8 in the 4th.

Just remember, the other team is trying to win too.  And Oregon is not some rando bubble team.

For sure. Nor is UCLA!

Obviously I can't say so much for Colorado, but their coach always does well against Tara's teams. Strange that Colorado hasn't played as well against other opponents.

Your three points are well-taken, but I fear we just have to live with them this year.

3-pt shooting is just not as good as it needs to be at this point, and I'm not sure what, if anything, can be done about that.  Both Hulls in particular are not shooting as well as they have in the past.

Post depth was something we thought would be a strength at the beginning of the year, but I get the feeling that Prechtel is really a big wing playing in a post's body.  I do get worried because Brink takes a real pounding in the paint when officiating is this lax.

With Jones, there will be great plays and there will be frustrating turnovers, and I think at this point we just have to hope the former outweighs the latter, or that the inconsistency is balanced out by, for example, Kiana's great first half.

Losing that 15-point lead so quickly before the end of the half was bothersome, but even before we upped the margin to 15 there were multiple possessions where our tough D gave us a chance to put in an early dagger with the ball and an 8-10 pt lead -- and we just couldn't convert those opportunities.

Kiana played all 40 minutes.  Where would we be without her, but still, not great IMO.

I had to laugh at one point in the first half where the play-by-play announcer said something to the effect of Sabally attempting a finesse shot.  Sabally plays with all the finesse of a runaway 18-wheeler.

Yeah! I remarked on that one too—on that play she bowled over one of our players on the way to missing the basket! Finesse was not even remotely part of the equation.

RE: WBB: Stanford 63 Oregon 61 - crackpot - 02-16-2021

Rewatching the game this morning (in English). The refs are so darned inconsistent. A few seasons back, if you told me they were going to play mug'em ball and Missy was one of the refs, I'd take that as a bonus (even accounting for head-scratching whistles on batting ones eyelashes sto hard). This season (and last, perhaps the last two?), it's just ugly, but also inconsistent. Is there no training, accountability, or what?  Many of these refs are into their third decade of stripe-wearing and have gotten worse.

RE: WBB: Stanford 63 Oregon 61 - martyup - 02-16-2021

The more I think about this game, the more I recognize that our women were warriors last night.  They faced down the adversity of being roughed up by an aggressive opponent in the face of inconsistent or non-existent ref'ing, red hot 3 point shooting by their opponent, and a road game in a hostile environment on a distracting custom painted court.  They lost a 15 point lead and found themselves 5 points down with just a few minutes to play.  But, they never stopped fighting.  They dove for loose balls.  They didn't whine about uncalled fouls.  They didn't lose their composure.  They kept fighting to the end.  This wasn't a beauty contest of a game, it was a battle.  And, our warriors prevailed.

The box score shows 40 minutes, but she was out for 23 seconds in the middle of the 3rd after two turnovers in the previous minute.  She came back in when Anna committed a turnover.

8 turnovers total in the 3rd (3 by Kiana).   I wish there was a way to distinguish the ones from tie balls.
