RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - BobK - 04-11-2021

Yes they were 18-0. But playing at 5

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-11-2021

Going to be close with Cal.  First set wins at 3 & 4.

Eight days ago, the 1s, 3s, and 4s beat Cal (at Stanford).

Sharp & Smith bounce back from first set loss (18-21) for a resounding win in the second:  21-10.  On to the third.

Stanford with the first point at 3s:  21-10, 21-19.

Cal wins at 1 & 2, taking a 2-1 lead.
It will come down to the 4s and 5s, which are going three sets.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-11-2021

The 5s win, but the 4s fall.  They were up 9-6 and 11-9, but then it was tied 12-12, and Cal won 15-13.

My guess is Stanford will fall back to 11th or 12th in the poll. Maybe 10th.

Cal beats Stanford 2-3.   Stanford goes 0-4 this weekend.  I can feel the NCAA tournament slipping away.  Even if Stanford wins out it's a long shot for Stanford to make the tournament.   On a more positive note, Stanford has taken one big leap forward this year since the inception of beach volleyball on the farm.

Well, winning out would mean beating Cal twice, GCU and (most importantly) #5 LMU.  If we did that, it would depend on how the other bubble teams did.
Of course, if Stanford were to pull off an upset of UCLA or USC in the Pac-12 tournament, that would help.
But my guess is the odds of Stanford making the tournament at this point are about 1 in 5.

Certainly agree that this has been a big leap forward.  Just to have a top-10 ranking and be in the tournament conversation bodes well for the future.  And should help with recruiting.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-13-2021

Stanford drops to #10, my optimistic scenario.

Some line up changes for today's meet with SMC:
#1» Ekstrom/Reilly
#2» Hodel/Villapando
#3» Kriz/Harvey
#4» Sharp/Smith
#5» Dailey/McKinney

Swapping Reilly and Villapando on the 1s and 2s, and moving Sharp & Smith up to #4.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 04-17-2021

IMO those were good lineup changes.  I felt the #1 and #2 teams have been under-performing the last few matches compared to how they had been doing earlier in the season.  Something needed to be changed.  Hopefully this yields better results.  Go Card.

Agree.
Hodel & Villapando won 2-0.  Ekstrom & Reilly tied 11-11 in the third.

Sharp & Smith won easily at the 4s.
The usually reliable 3s (Harvey & Kriz) fell 0-2.

Ekstrom & Reilly put away the third 15-13; Stanford wins 4-1.

I believe SMC beat Pepperdine earlier today.  Pepperdine vs. Cal getting underway now.

Stanford vs. Cal nominally at 4pm, but probably closer to 4:30pm.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-17-2021

The 2s and 4s beat Cal (2s went three sets).
5s won their first set 21-13.
Fingers crossed.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 04-17-2021

I watched some of the Hodel/Villapando match.  That was exciting college beach volleyball lasting three sets.  They were so tired when they finally won they didn't celebrate, just struggled to walk off the court.

Who is playing on Cal's #1 team; Mimi Mirkovic? If it is, that's understandable Cal would win at the #1 position. Mirkovic and Plummer won a bronze medal at the U19 and U21 world beach championships.

Edit: Just looked at the #1 teams video. That's Mirkovic and her team is leading 4-0 in the second set.

I had heard Stanford indoor volleyball was Mirkovic's first choice until she was told playing front row was an unlikely possibility.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-17-2021

Hmm, Stanfords 1s and 3s struggling.  Might be up to the 5s to decide this.

The 5s win, 21-13, 21-18.

The 3s bounced back from a bad first set (14-21) to lead 17-9 in the second. 1s lost 14-21, trail 5-7.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 04-17-2021

The 3s win second set. The 1s lose in two sets.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-17-2021

And the 3s got whomped in the third set, 15-7.

Maddie Kriz's left hand is heavily taped, not sure if that is affecting her play.
Thought the 1s and 3s lacked energy at times late today.  Harvey and Kriz both hit into the net a few times.
Charlie Ekstrom shanked some serve receives.

Stanford wins, but they don't seem to be playing as well as earlier in the season.

Tomorrow they take on Pepperdine, and then I guess the top Pac-12 team meets the top WCC team, and the runners-up play. the top two play, which will be Stanford and either Cal or SMC. Plus a consolation meet for the third and fourth teams.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-18-2021

Maya Harvey out of today's line-up.  Kylee Matheson jumps from the exhibition match to the 3s to play with Maddi Kriz.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-18-2021

Sharp & Smith get the first point, 21-9, 21-16.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 04-18-2021

2s win in three sets.  3s are probably going to lose.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-18-2021

Hodel & Villapando win in three, 21-18, 14-21, 15-12.

5s won their first set 21-12.
And the second 21-11, taking the meet.

3s did lose.  1s in progress, down 4-10 in the first set.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-18-2021

Versus Cal, the 2s fall but the 4s get it done 22-20, 21-19.

Not sure, but I think I saw Maya Harvey keeping score.  If so, I guess it is not covid keeping her from playing.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 04-18-2021

The 1s and 5s fall, giving Cal the meet.
The 3s have started their third set.

Third set was ugly, from what I saw.  Stanford loses 1-4, have now split with Cal 2-2 this season.  And play them yet again next Saturday.
And could meet them again in the Pac-12 tournament.

Feels like Stanford has plateaued; not sure what they can do to improve their results at this point.
