That's a good point. I will be interested to see ESPN TV ratings on Wednesday of Stanford/South Carolina vs Sunday's game of UConn vs Louisville.
I have one unrelated question. With about 5 seconds left in the game and Tennessee backing off because the outcome was settled Haley took a shot. Was the shot clock close to zero? If not that was ill-advised in my opinion.

My happiest thought for the night: unlike last year and a bit of this year, we showed how to play with a lead down the final stretch. Not a ton of turnovers, not dribble until the last 8 seconds and heave something up and not missing fre throws. To be positive, we played with poise , played smart and put Tennessee away.
To this worry wort, that was a very positive and important thing to see at the end of a big game.

Exactly. I think I'm kind of at the same place 81Alum is w/r/t this game, and honestly, with our team in general. We won a national championship last year by scoring a total of two more points than our opponents in the semis and finals combined. In both games we let double digit or near-double digit leads slip late. But we still won. And so too did we today. This team gets out to improbable leads. It also gets sloppy for long stretches. It creates beautiful cuts. And sometimes send passes to that ghost sixth player no one else on the court can see. I've just come to accept it, because it is what it is. But you know what? We had a number of teams over the past two decades that were more disciplined and played cleaner basketball, and none of them won us a championship. So I'll take it.
The beauty of this game is we got so much of what we needed to build toward a repeat:
-We went on the road against what was easily the most intimidating crowd we've faced since whenever we last played at Arizona before the pandemic.
-
Wilson and
Prechtel have to have a renewed sense of confidence after the former really revived our offensive flow and defensive pressure, and the latter basically just bailed us out in the 4Q. If there were two players who should have felt a bit deflated this fall after their performances last season, it was them.
-
Jones, who had been really quiet lately, made so much happen even when her shots weren't falling.
-
Lexie had spurts of the kind of play that has made her such a glue player for us.
-The team knows it basically doesn't need
Brink to win against a top 10 opponent (I had gotten a bit worried we were getting a bit too reliant on her to carry our offense).
-
Jump has played heavy minutes back to back and been solid all the way along.
-
Iriafen is showing steely resolve in the paint in tight games. Tara can be confident in adding her into the rotation without much of a drop off in our paint presence.
-We were ice from the line, after so many abysmal games losing free points left, right, and center. Free throw shooting is a confidence game, and this had to feel good given how absolutely hostile the arena was with every trip to the line.
Honestly, I really can't think of how we could have asked for more from that game, other than those 7 bad minutes. But basketball is a game of runs, and I never thought for a moment that Tennessee wasn't going to come back when we got out to that 20 point lead. The law of averages, folks.
As far as I'm concerned, I'm starting my Xmas week as a very happy Stanford fan.

Yea, there was about a couple seconds more on the game clock than the shot clock, so she half-heartedly put up a shot before the shot clock went off.

Make that back-to-back-to-back threes by Prechtel!

The sophomore slump can be real. I’m wondering about Brink’s health.
We should all have sophomore slumps where we are the leading scorer and rebounder on the team. Brink had a bad game, but she was the player of the week after the Baha Mar tournament. Remember, she had a 20/20 game in there.

I find it interesting that Tara and the two players were masked the entire time during the press conference, while the Tennessee coach was not.
(In the previous game''s press conference, Tara masked for a part of the time, while the players did not.)
I suspect she heard of the Arizona cancellation and doesn't want that to happen to Stanford.
Sigh... The ESPNW site at 10:45PM PST doesn't mention Stanford (nor Tennessee) on its Home page, nor its Sports page.
I went to their pages to see if they had anything about a replacement for Arizona against Texas. No mention that that game has been cancelled or whatever. No mention of the top--10 game results between Stanford and Tennessee.
On the Home page,
Stanford: 0
Tennessee: 0
Arizona: 0
Texas: 0
UConn: 27
South Carolina: 17
Georgia Tech: 10
Bueckers: 6
LSU: 6
Baylor: 6
NC State: 5
Wisconsin: 5 (WVB)
Nebraska: 3 (WVB)
Louisville: 8 (3x WVB, 1x AD, 4x WBB)
Georgia: 2
Georgia Southern: 5
The Sports page has more WVB due to the NC today, but the WBB is much the same.
I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed.

Comment on Brink: Towards the end of the prior game her arms got tangled with the opponent, I believe on a rebound. Brink not only did not attempt to untangle, but seemed to purposefully entwine both arms around one of her opponents arms while simultaneously acting like she (Cam) was doing nothing wrong. Poor acting and poor judgement maybe out of frustration, and I think she (Cam) got called for the foul. I yelled at the TV, "sit her down" and about a half second later Fran ran to the scorer's table. Only point here is that along with the fouls last night seems like Brink just needs to play a bit smarter & stay a tad calmer and the foul count will drop.

Yes, I remember at the time thinking Brink was definitely the aggressor. She was acting like it was the other player's fault. It was bad acting on her part. I'm a fan of Brink but she does act like almost every foul she commits is not a foul. Must learn to accept officials are the ones who call the game and every official might be slightly different. You can't have the mindset a foul is a foul only if it's a foul in your mind.

I went back and rewatched the fouls on Brink.
1. The foul at 7:04 in the 1st did not seem particularly bad. She rotated to defend against Horsten and Horsten ran into her. Brink was probably not set for long enough and so it was a blocking call, but it was not egregious. Her arms could possibly have been more straight up but the foul was called on her body and not being set.
2. The 2nd foul at 8:38 in the 2nd was a moving screen on offense, and she was definitely moving. But note that this was not about being overly aggressive on defense.
3. The 3rd foul at 8:33 in the 3rd she was on defense against Key. She was trying to push the larger Key out of the paint (and not succeeding) prior to the pass. The pass came into Key who made a spin move and the basket. Brink's contact with Key was not that strong--forearm on the back at the start, there was no arm check or hacking, arms stayed up. Yes this was a foul, probably, but not a particularly bad one--modest contact on Key's back as she spun. Key had been pushing the lighter Brink all over the paint at the other end and this looked like similar play but not as effective.
4. The 4th foul at 5:20 in the 3rd Brink rotated to try to stop or block Dye's shot under the basket after Dye blew by Jones. Brink's error was (I think) leaving her feet to reach for the block, but she was also inside the restricted zone so maybe it wouldn't have mattered. I guess she should just have let Dye score once Dye got around Jones, but our team is taught to give help. This one looks more like a mental lapse than the others.
5. The 5th foul at 8:28 in the 4th she was on defense against Key and did not get called on Key's attempt. The O-board went to Dye and she was called for a foul on Dye's putback. I did not see a lot of contact from the camera angle--it looks like Brink may have put her hands on the front of Dye as she turned to face her but there was no shove. Again, it is hard to say this was a bad foul.
Three of her fouls came when she rotated off of her main defensive assignment and made contact while providing help. One was an offensive foul. Only 1 foul came on her primary defensive assignment.
In short, all 5 calls were probably technically correct although some of them might not have been called in a less closely refereed contest, and three of them did not look like bad fouls at all. The 2nd foul on the moving screen was the most obvious of the five, the 4th was possibly a mental lapse, but the other three were all close calls that went against her. I don't think this is quite as bad as the announcers made it out to be as "a loss of defensive discipline" or whatever they said. The game was called much tighter inside than we are used to and as evidence of thisTennessee's Key also fouled out.
I do worry about Brink defending Boston--mainly that Boston's size will allow her to muscle her way deep into the paint and Brink is too light to stop it. Perhaps she will have to front Boston to deny her receiving passes. Hopefully Belibi will be back by then--we might need her. Will have to take a look at the game from the semis and see how we handled Boston.

I especially noted this comment from Coach Harper (emphasis mine)
Quote:On using Stanford's losses to common opponents to prepare…
I think when you look at head-to-head matchups, I think it's less about the end result and more about the matchup and the style. There are teams that you just match up well with, and there are teams that you don't, and I think that's what you see there a little bit. I think Stanford, early on in the season, was trying to figure out life without their point guard from last year, and I think you could see that a little bit. In that moment, Texas was the probably the worst game on their schedule to have in that moment. They're definitely more comfortable now. They've been getting better and better."

Brink is going to be muscled around forever by heftier posts and I’m sure she knows that is one of her primary defensive issues.
I disagree somewhat about foul #2. In real time, it seemed like a real stretch to move so far to try and set that screen. Maybe the slo-mo shows different, but in real time the screen seemed to be all “chicken wing” and not much body. Gave me a Homer Simpson “Doh” moment. Not the smartest play.
She took a couple of tumbles/slips to the floor and that was kind of scary.
