A runner or two in scoring position seems to be the way Montgomery likes it.
But, wow. Just, wow. A sweep on the road, in poor weather, including a shutout of the #2 team in the country. AYKM? And back-to back shutouts? 24 scoreless innings. Go Card!

Stanford suffered a dreaded mid-week loss to UT-San Antonio in extra innings, 6-5. Not that UT-San Antonio is necessarily terrible--they are 7-1 on the young season--but Stanford is the first quality team they've faced. On top of that, UT-San Antonio is certainly not a traditional power, more like a middling Conference USA program.
I did not watch or listen to the game, but the box score says that Stanford committed four errors and three of UT-San Antonio's six runs, including the walk-off, were unearned.
So this looks like a case of Stanford playing below the level of its opponent. Too bad, because all-in-all this was a very good roadie to Texas.

UTSA 6 Stanford 5 (10). Observations after 8 games.
How much does Jones miss having Tawa batting behind him? Huff is hitting really well, but it will take time to gain a reputation. Meanwhile, Jones looks like he’s pressing.
Double plays. By my count 6 in the last two games. Time to practice hitting the ball in the air?
Pitching has been incredible. The progress made by Dowd, Dixon, and several others is impressive.

Well, since you missed the game. They were down and came back to tie the game. UTSA are on a winning streak and no matter who you are beating, that builds confidence. Oh yeah, Stanford just played a double header the day before and had to travel for this one. Players need rest, and Esquer probably saw this as a good time to give some guys some rest and other some PT. Next man up, and its not like they were blown out of this game. I do agree that Jones is pressing, but screw the launch angle hitting, he needs to work on hitting the ball the other way since he has the extreme shift put on him ever AB.

I'm sure that UTSA's winning streak gave them confidence, but not as much as Stanford's four errors did. And even with all of the errors and non-error miscues (HBP, failure to get outs in sacrifice situations), Stanford still took this game to the wire. Like I said, it was a very good roadie with an ugly finish. The great thing about baseball is that there's another game in a few days with a chance to (1) show that Monday's game was a fluke and (2) start a new winning streak. I think this team is (again) CWS material, so I guess I have high expectations. So to answer Madera86's question, yes, I expect Stanford to win every mid-week game. That's how much better this team is than the mid-week competition, IMO.

Yep, Jones has to learn to adjust to how he's being pitched. The good news is that we don't need him to hit 18 dingers this year, and it ain't gonna happen anyway. There's no reason he can't hit over .300 again and hit the occasional home run when he gets the once in a while "mistake" pitch.

I was there. CSUN pitcher was a nasty sidearm thrower. Montgomery had likely never faced that before. 3 K’s, one looking.
Having said that, this is a team in trouble. They need a leader. Huff is a possibility. But someone needs to step up and be the sparkplug.
