I've come to trust Kyle Shanahan. Last week he said Armstead would be out a few weeks and he wasn't concerned about the injury. To me that meant he'd be back practicing in mid-August.

Only until he fails to make the move you think he should make; at that point you will lose all trust in Niner management.

Good thing the Commanders went for Carson Wentz instead of the cheaper quarterback who brought his team to the Super Bowl last season:

I'd feel the same way except that Kocurek is basically a miracle worker.  He's upgraded a fair number of DL's.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 08-04-2022

Hope you are correct.

Nkemdicke (sp) would be a miracle. One of the top HS DL ever. Almost flopped in college and has completely underperformed in the NFL. Losing Hurst hurts. What's Givens done? Nothing. What's Kinlaw done? Nothing.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 08-05-2022

Kocurek said some really nice things about Kinlaw yesterday that painted the picture of a guy who really wants it.  He raved about his work ethic and his body. They are now starting to ramp up his snaps, targeting him to be ready for the Chicago opener. This may mean he doesn't play in the exhibition games, I don't know.

Another Kocurek pupil that seems to be primed to have a big year is Samson Ekubam. Kocurek basically repeated what Ebukam said recently about his expectations this season. Ekubam played DE in college. At the Rams he was an OLB. He moved back to DE with Niners last year and it took him a while to get the feel for playing DE again. All those who paid attention could see he started to produce more at the end of the season. Kocurek said Ebukam didn't really have much of an offseason last year to learn the position and technique, and Ebukam said it took him a while to learn how to play with a hand down and attack OL from a 3-point stance.  They both basically said Ebukam is poised for a big year now that he's comfortable at DE in the Niners' system. The logic is sound.

Nope. Once someone has my trust it takes a lot to lose it because I believe in people who earn it. There are a lot of Niner fans who complain about everything and are chicken littles. I am not one of them. Though I believe Lance will perform well this year, even if he struggles I will not call out the Niners and Kyle Shanahan for drafting him, fully aware he will make the biggest leap in performance from his first year as a starter to his second. But even if he isn't good enough to have warranted trading 3 first round picks to get him, I will always believe that was the right decision. As I said in the Giants thread, I don't get upset and lose trust in people who take big swings and miss when trying to win. I get upset at those who are timid to take big swings toward winning, and the other things they do fail. Big difference.

The Niners have taken several big swings:

- Traded for Garoppolo and signed him to richest QB deal in history after just 6 games playing for them
- Traded for Dee Ford
- Traded DeForrest Buckner for what became Javon Kinlaw, to keep Arik Armstead
- Traded for and signed Trent Williams
- Traded 3 first round picks to get Trey Lance

It's a mixed bag and some decision results are TBD, but the fact is those decisions have already led to leading a Super Bowl and NFC CG in the 4th quarter, and I doubt that would have happened without those go for it moves.

Shanahan is a little too conservative with his game management than I prefer, but his knowledge, leadership, judgement, and transparency are all impressive. I can't not trust people with those traits.

Kocurek worked wonders with Kerry Hyder in 2020. Hyder regressed significantly when he left the 49ers, and has now returned. Kocurek will crush it with Drake. He spent nine seasons in Detroit teaching Ndamokung Suh, Nick Fairley, Cliff Avril and Ziggy Ansuh. They had 250 sacks and 57 forced fumbles, both 4th in the NFL during that period.

Edge is not the problem. The interior is.

Priceless commentary. You've truly come to the dark side. . . .

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 08-07-2022

David Lombardi compared the command Trey Lance had in the last two days of "move the ball" periods as impressive. He compared the command of the offense and feel he got from watching Lance in person yesterday as comparable to being there to see Andrew Luck in the Fiesta Bowl.

Shanahan put 1:15 on the clock and a score of opponent leading 24-20. Lance needed a TD drive against the #1 defense. He got it on the last play as time expired. The previous day the offense was backed up to the 5 yard line facing 1st and 20. Lance engineered a first down against the # defense.

Lance threw a bad pick to Jimmy Ward before his no huddle end of game performance, but he's now 14-20 (70%) 1/1 over two days of as close to a real game tests as practice gets. Lombardi pointed out that last year in similar situations Lance was only 48%. Yes, it's a small sample size, but it's pretty clearly evident Lance has improved a ton since this time last year and will be much better than he was as a rookie.

Will he be as good as Garoppolo was last season or better? I don't know, but I am now ready to go out on a limb and say Lance will at least be a Top half of the NFL QB in 2022. I've suspected he would be much improved and stop the "they traded too much for him" talk, but there hasn't been any real tangible proof to demonstrate it until now. I like making predictions before things are obvious, so am calling my shot on Lance now.

Why are you so negative about the Niners who are good, and so positive about the Giants who aren't?

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - cardcrimson - 08-07-2022

"Pretty clearly evident"? "Tangible proof until now"?

Please. It's one practice drive and commentary from a Niners beat writer. I thought I read last week, or was it earlier this week that practices weren't going well. . . .

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 08-07-2022

It's not just me and Lombardi - who is a very honest broker - talking up Lance. This is TA's national NFL writer.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Mick - 08-07-2022

Lance's preseason is playing out perfectly for him to hit the NFL regular season.

First, he is practicing against what may be the best defense in the NFL.  The Niner defense is two deep with studs at every position. Lance is getting his baptism of fire NOW when it's utterly meaningless.

Second, Lance opens up against pretty good defenses in pre-season, the Packers (#10) and the Vikings (#15).  The third preseason game, when historically the starters play the most, the 49ers play the Texans (#21 last year) in a confidence builder for Lance and...

Third, best yet...the Niners open against the Chicago Bears, last year's worst passing defense. Week 2 of the regular season, it's the Seahawks at #20 passing defense in 2021.  Weeks 3 and 4, Lance will face the Broncos and the Rams. They were 2021's 5th and 6th best passing defense in the NFL last year.  I suspect he will have progressed enough at that point to play very well.

I think the big story in 2022 will be that Trey Lance is one of the very best quarterbacks in the league. Griese and passing game coordinator Slovik like him:

The game is slowing down for him:

He's coming on fast:

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - lex24 - 08-07-2022

Lance went 4-12 in last workout. 1 for last 11.  He’s going to stink…..  Do I mean that, no.  My point is, it’s August.  Lance obviously has talent.  How that translates in his first season on the field is anyones guess.

My guess (and we are all guessing, mine not being particularly educated as I haven’t seen play him this summer) is he will be uneven and inconsistent. Make some big plays, big mistakes.  Key to me is where he is about game 12.

Bigger issue on Niners is center and guards. Interior offensive line is an enormous question mark.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 08-07-2022

Hey OF I am in my fifty first year working for the NFL. I can’t have a favorite. You can’t believe the affidavit I have to sign. If the Niners are really good I may get two playoff games which means more cash. But right now I believe Lance is Randy Elliot. Got to do it in something that matters, just maybe the regular season pal?

As goes the line, so goes the quarterback, especially a rookie (sort of) one. .  .

Trey Lance went 14/19 yesterday. Didn't throw an interception.  Loved Shanahan's quote, when asked about Lance's 50% completion rate prior to yesterday:

“You can still win games when you’re off on throws. You can’t win games when you turn the ball over.”
