they make money through endorsements; they feel pressure to conform to traditional stereotypes of how women should look good; they take time on their makeup and hair even before games. cam and dijonai are 2 of the about 10 women interviewed.

Sorry, didn't realize that. It's an article about 4-5 women's bb players, college and WNBA, and their make-up and fashion approaches to making themselves marketable both on the court and off, talking about the NIL contracts they have etc. Cam and Carrington are two of the featured
players,

Lots of pictures of the athletes with their make-up etc, glam shots and not so glam. Here's part of the text re Cam (had to retype it, can't copy it)
"Stanford forward Cameron Brink usually applies concealer, eyebrow gel, mascara and mayble a little blush before she heads out for a game, but se scoffed at the idea of in-game touch-ups. 'I look like this when I was playing. I'm going to live with it,' she said. . . . There's a swelling fan base that follows Brink on social media. She posts makeup tutorials, which she loves because she views makup as art. 'It's really relaxing to me,' she said. Brink has had deals with ThirdLove, Visible Mobile, the energy drink Celsius and Portland Gear.

Yeah, I like the idea players can get paid for all their hard work but seems like NIL is a lot more about how players look and how much social media they do to get followers. So players now have to be students, athletes, business women to deal with NIL stuff, and cultivate social media by being "feminine" and interesting to follow. College sports is becoming pro sports but with young athletes who already have too much on their plate as it is.

I can't wrap my head around this one. The NIL stuff I mostly get, even if I find some annoying. The NCAA shot itself in the foot over stupid rules that someone couldn't make money off of their own NIL. But the Texas Tech deal (and those of their ilk that seem to be popping up in football, especially) is simply getting paid to play--a disleveling of the playing field.

As I was watching this highlight video of last season's tournament, two thoughts came to mind.
Brink is very capable of playing forward. She will be a nightmare for some teams to guard.
I recall Brink as a freshman. She had a blend of quickness, coordination, and reaction speed you rarely see in an 18 year old, 6'4" plus player. I hope there are not unrealistic expectations for Betts right out of the gate. As an upperclassman she will become extremely difficult for opponents to stop. But as a youngster she may need a little time to grow into her body.

I don't think you will have to wait until Betts is an upperclassman to see her prowess. We saw Brink develop so significantly from freshman to sophomore, she became an All-American. I think the same is in store for Betts. In addition to her WNBA type body and incredible length, Lauren has great hands and footwork for a post, she is formidable defensively. Best thing I like about her is she's smart; doesn't try to do things she's currently not capable of doing. She sets great screens and looks to pass.
Will agree, she needs some work in conditioning. Right now she cannot get up and down the court quickly. And even though she's already a physical specimen, she needs to get stronger, so she can become more explosive when rebounding or scoring off the block. That's probably what she'll be working on as a freshman.
I can see Tara putting her in many non-conference games or PAC12 games where Stanford is comfortably ahead and (once she is over any freshman jitters), fans will see glimpses of her future greatness.
Don't know if it will happen this season, but I would love to see her and Brink (the twin towers), on the court together. That would be frightening enough for most of our opponents.

Your post, and Brink's highlights, reminded me that Cam's ability to get downcourt is one of her strengths. Because her legs are so-o-o long, it looks like she's literally winding up to run down court, but in reality she's beating smaller defenders down on the break.
I think we can be sure staff will be working hard with Betts to get her into condition. She'll be facing tougher, stronger and quicker opponents every game at this level. But maybe it's like the story of the two hunters being pursued by the lion. You don't have to beat the lion, just the other hunter. She doesn't have to beat every defender down the court, just maybe the one guarding her. I think she'll be fine. She might be the most intimidating pure interior presence we've ever had.

Have followed this team for 12 years. Do not underestimate them. This is the team that defeated Colorado, #8 Iowa and #10 Iowa State before getting crushed by South Carolina in last season's tournament. Earlier in the season they lost to UConn by only 8 points. Great coach (Jim Flanery) who is not afraid to play anyone. Though limited in size (tallest players are 6'1), they play with some of the best spacing I have seen. 8 players averaged 10+ minutes last season. Motion offense and spot-on passing to open players who deliver. Should be a fun game.

Stanford's home opener will be Friday, November 11th. @ Pacific's Alex Spanos Center.
2022-23 Women's Basketball Schedule - University of the Pacific (pacifictigers.com)
The good news for Pacific is they return 90% of last year's roster. The bad news for Pacific, they finished 6-23. I'm glad this opening game for us is on the road and not at Maples. Many will recall that Pacific gave us a battle in the first half of our game two years ago. Anything to get the team humming by Nov. 20th. is good.

Pieces of the 2022-2023 non-conference schedule beginning to come together. After playing our opening game on the road against Pacific (Friday, November 11th), we play our 2nd. game at Portland's Chiles Center on Sunday, November 13th.

We played them (and beat them) last season at Maples and won by about 20, but I was mildly impressed with 6'6 sophomore Lucy Cochrane who scored 8 points with 4 blocks. Cochrane ended the season with an average of 3.9 blocks/game. They have more size with 6'7 sophomore Maddi Condron who redshirted last season.
This will be a more challenging game than at Pacific, but it gives us an opponent with exceptional size prior to Nov. 20th against the Gamecocks.

So Pac12 games get underway before Christmas this year? Ugh. I've never been a fan of games so close to Christmas (the 23rd is as late as you can play) and probably means the team won't get a very extended Christmas break to be with their families which is disappointing. Last year we played at SC on Dec 21st and our next game was December 31. I think its most beneficial to the student athletes to have some extended time to be away during the holidays.
Any idea if any other big name schools are playing in the Hawaii tournament? Last year the schedule was released September 1. I'm anxiously and patiently awaiting this year.
