RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - winflop - 05-18-2023

Hot weather is nothing new to any of our players. They have all played summer junior & amateur circuits for years, with temps like this and hotter as well as sweltering humidity especially for Heck, Ganne and Englemann who are from Missouri, New Jersey, and Texas respectively (Zhang & Xu are for CA but have played plenty of events east of the Rockies in the summertime).

Also, both Coach Walker and Asisstant Coach Brooke Riley will be out there.

Hydration is the least of my concerns. My biggest concerns are whether Heck can play well in her first tournament in six months, and whether our two frosh are up to the challenge. I have more faith in Ganne as she's played deep into big events (US Open at Olympic, US Amateur & US Junior, Curtis Cup, Junior Solheim, and Augusta). Xu is relatively untested at this level. I also have faith that Coach Walker wouldn't have put either Heck or Seay on the roster if she thought for a second that they weren't ready.

I look forward to seeing Heck's big smile on TV. It's always there and it's so refreshing. I remember talking to her at the range about a week after her surgery and she was smiling & laughing with her teammates the entire time.

Exactly the wrong kind of start.  Need to pick up our game or we will be really on the outside looking in.

At the moment it looks like Stanford is in 24th place out of 30 teams.  Where's Spiny to give some details about what's going on?

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - mbdude - 05-19-2023

heck +7, xu +6
Xang , Ganne even

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - M T - 05-19-2023

Stanford finishes at even par
 Zhang E
 Englemmann -1
 Ganne -4
 Xu +5
 Heck +10
As I type this Stanford is T7 with 2 other teams

Wake Forest -9, OkState -8, So Car -3, GA -2, NM  -1

Nice recovery from an awful back 9

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - Softball Fan - 05-19-2023

I hope it was just a bit of nervousness for Heck returning to live competition and she is 100% healthy.  Look forward optimistically to tomorrow's play.

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - pefloresjr - 05-19-2023

Amazing!  When we fell to 7 over, I was hoping we could claw back to 4 or 5 over and at least get to 18th or 20th place.  When we fell to 9 over, I was hoping we could get back to 7 over and hoping for the best at making the cut to play on Monday.  Shooting back to even on this course over the final 1/4 of the course is amazing.  They are now already at the match play cut line.  Hopefully the team will be as relieved as I am and just relax and go play great for the next 5 days.  I especially hope Rachel Heck is just suffering from being rusty.

Cheers,
Pete F.

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - M T - 05-19-2023

After everyone finished, Stanford is T7 with 2 other teams, just 2 shots out of T3.

Rachel Heck had no birdies, 6 bogeys and 2 double bogeys.
Sadie Engleman had an eagle on a par 5.

Bigtime rally on the second (front) nine to stay in contention. I saw the scores mid-round while I was out at Stanford GC and suffice to say I thought they were hosed.

Seay is playing in Heck's spot tomorrow. Hope she's more up to the challenge, that Xu can shake off the jitters, and that Zhang plays like everyone knows she can play.

The positive momentum continues in round 2 with the Cardinal moving up four spots through holes 5-7.  Seay and Xu each at -2.

Geaux Cardinal!

Getting great play across the lineup so far! Just gotta hang tough on the back nine. The course stats from round 1 don’t show it but I recall the back being harder than the front

Counting all 5 of our players in the first 4 rounds, last year our front 9 total was +23 and back nine +2; only in the third round was it close (-1 vs. -2).

If I'm reading the stat board correctly, at the moment, Stanford is in second place in round 2; up by 7 shots on the third place team.  This round will be added to the first round totals so hard to say where Stanford will be positioned after both rounds are combined.

The first column of scores, labeled "To Par", is the combined running score of all rounds; the column labeled "Today" is today's round only. The first column, labeled "Pos" for Position, indicates each team's current overall place in the field. We're currently 3 behind Wake overall (-13 vs. -16) but are 6 strokes better than them this round (-13 to -7) with 1 to 3 holes left to play.

ATM Stanford is -15 today so far and -15 for the tournament.  A few more holes to play.  Seay is -3 for 18 today.  A very nice job.  Zhang is - 5 and Englemann -4 with a couple of holes left.  Ganne is even and Xu is -3.  We are now only one hole behind Wake Forest.

Top 5 are teams ranked 1, 2, 4, 6 and 24.  Missing are #3 LSU, #8 SJS, #5 Mississippi State and #9 USC.  USC is close, the rest have work to do ahead of them. I would say Seay has earned the start tomorrow.

Thanks, I wasn't reading the leader board correctly.   Looking at "To Par" column Stanford should be no less than third when round 2 is complete for all the teams.   What a turnaround.

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - Spiny_Norman - 05-20-2023

I’m visiting family this weekend so not much time to pay attention to Stanford golf. But the team figured out some things yesterday afternoon and applied them very successfully today. The course seemed to play easier for other teams too. South Carolina, USC, Texas all shot 276, -12. But no one went as low as Stanford at 273, -15.

Edit to add - Stanford’s score was the lowest in NCAA championship history.

The course generally plays tougher in the afternoon so I don’t expect any teams to post those numbers in the afternoon wave.

Stanford’s position should get it an early tee time tomorrow too. Let’s hope we see more of what they did today. Remember that the goal is to be top 8 after Monday’s final stroke play round.

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - winflop - 05-20-2023

Now that’s more like it!!!

Small sample size but looks like Seay’s recovery is more complete than Heck’s.

Three players in the top 10 and a great comeback round for Kelly Xu

RE: WGolf - 2023 thread - M T - 05-21-2023

Am I reading the score board right??  The best team today is +1?

Stanford is tops overall but +5 today, 3 ahead of UT, 15 ahead of #8
