Jump is going to win us a Pac 12 regular season championship with that last dagger.

Was just about to post about her final nail.

The funniest thing is that the line is 8, and we might just beat it.

LOL, we beat the spread.

talk about a final score not being representative of the game.

Wowzer!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Colorado Thursday 2pm - 81alum - 02-23-2023

Now, the job at Utah just got a lot harder, with 2 overtimes and players like Jones playing 50 minutes.  I hope we don't have to play Colorado again in the Pac 12 tourney.

A great, gutsy victory, but not a fun game to watch.  This is not a style of basketball I admire.  I have felt that way about JR Payne for years--regardless of whether we win or lose.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Colorado Thursday 2pm - BostonCard - 02-23-2023

Haley Jones 23 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists.  Also 5 turnovers and 12 missed shots.  You take the bad with the good.

After the way the game was going who would have thought we would outscore them 13-2 in the second OT?

Hard to believe.

Didn't have the game on. Checked the score and read this thread. The comments, considering the outcome, are hilarious. Stunning negativity and critique, only to give way to wonder and compliments.

All 9 FTs we missed were in the 2 OTs. We shoot 13-22 overall.

We're exhausted in our house. Maybe, by the time it was done, Haley's best game of the season? Certainly the most gritty. And great game from Betts. Augers well for the future.

You know, I called certain posters out for being overly negative a couple of games back. I don’t think that was the case here. We were playing truly dreadfully in the first half, and people commented that we were playing poorly, but there was surprisingly little trashing of the team.

Card now guaranteed the top seed in Vegas, based on the misc. tiebreakers

Hard to believe.

I legitimately believe that we are a better and deeper team, so this was not a fluke win.  There was more variance in the quarter to quarter scoring in this game than you might expect (we scored 5 points in the first quarter and 20 in the third, while COlorado scored 12 points in the first OT and 2 in the second).  But overall, winning a close game is what was expected.  As I noted, the line was 8; scaled to 40 minutes, we won by 8.8.

I was watching on DVR always at least a few minutes behind real time, so I didn't come by to post. Also what could I say! Great work sticking with it and keeping on grinding. I think our depth told in this game, with players available to come in from the bench and do just what was needed against Colorado's style of play: Great game for Fran with her toughness and experience. Great performance by Betts as she continues to grow and find herself at the top D-I level. Nice contribution by Bosgana in the first half. Etc.!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Colorado Thursday 2pm - 81alum - 02-23-2023

My impressions:

1) Ignore most of the stats.  The stats in a double overtime are grossly deceptive.  We dramatically improved in just about all categories in the two overtimes, or else we would despair looking at the stat sheet.

2) Brink's foul trouble reminds us just how crucial she is to the game--and not mainly on offense.  The entire character of the game changes when she is not patrolling the paint.

3) Betts and Jump played well.  Jump 4/6 from three, Betts 5/9 with 8 rebounds.  We don't win if either of those two have bad games.

4) What the heck happened to our free throw shooting?  Is it an elevation thing?  Betts could have won it at the end of the the first overtime, and we were a paltry 13/22 after shooting quite well in the last couple of months.  Again, the game is not that close and a lot shorter if we shot our free throws better.

5) Jones.  Jones. Jones.  You live by the Jones and die by the Jones.  7/19 shots, but only 2/4 in the first half, a worse 2/10 in the second half, and 3/5 in overtime.  11 rebounds meaning a double double, and a whopping 7 assists, but also 4 fouls and 5 turnovers.  The game belongs to her, both the bad and the good.

6) We are GOOD defensively, thank goodness.  Colorado held to 29% shooting, and only 16% three point shooting, and we out rebounded them in both categories.

7) Bench points.  Stanford 27, Colorado 6.  It was nice to see Belibi and Betts have good games, wish Prechtel could have had more minutes, given that those three are all from Colorado.

8) Points in the paint.  In that horrible first half, we had almost none.  By the end of the game: Stanford 40 Colorado 30.

All in all, I will work hard to erase all memories of this ugly thing and instead dwell pleasantly on the fact that we just locked up at least a tie for winning the Pac 12.  It will be VERY interesting to see how we do against Utah after a draining game like this.  It will be a test of endurance and perseverance that may tell us much about our prospects in the coming tournaments.

However, at this point, I have to give our team and coaches credit.  We have won a lot of ugly, close games this year.  Yes, we have also lost a couple.  But it does increasingly seem as if our team--which is younger than many think--has some grit.

In the first minute of the 2nd half, they didn't call Jones being tripped as she went to the basket and then down to her knees, followed shortly by Sherrod planting her entire foot out of bounds before "saving" the ball.

To me, the most game-changing non-call was on Jones's drive late in regulation, when her arm was jerked backwards, and she had to throw up a desperate shot once she regained her arm. Looking at you Missy.

But I thought that Missy was "new and improved."  Did Bacon corrupt her?  Or is there a slim chance that she is just as bad as she has been for more than 20 years?
