Willie “Puddinhead” Jones a whiz kid

In Philly about 1992 with family kids young so we took a carriage ride.  The driver a young woman.  She asked any questions I said why did Phillie  Fans boo Del Ennis so much.  Of course like many here she had no clue who he was but maybe their best player late 50s but boo’d when He didn’t get a hit every at bat
In the Phillie pennant wining  year 1950 Ennis lead the NL in RBIs.  A great whiz kid

Willie “puddinhead” Jones is correct too!

Bob earns bonus points as “Mike the usher” named “puddinhead” as one of the Whiz Kids.

Hint: former Phillie played in the 70’s, now has a concession stand.

Concession stand  - Ted Luzinski.  I’m thinking really big Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches.  . …..

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 05-17-2023

Greg Luzinski owns the concession stand.
Thanks to he who shall not be named

I beat him to it (at least on the board). See prior post.

I’m sure he got it sometime ago so it’s your fault for not posting earlier! :).

Except I said Ted. Seriously? Ted? Given to whom the last name rhymes with, perhaps there is a some irony here!

Ted Luzinski?!? Sounds like the guy mentioned in the post that got "he who shall not be named" banned. . . .

Yes, that was the “irony” I mentioned.

pasportsfan - PAsportsfan - 05-17-2023

Greg “The Bull” Luzinski is correct! He started “Bull’s Barbecue” near section 104.

Thanks for playing everyone and congratulations on the Giants sweeping my Phillies.

4 of the first 5 and 8 of the first 12 pitchers who gave up the most HRs are in the Hall of Fame. Who are they ?

Somehow your prior post didn't load for me. I got Bobbbbbb's latter post but not yours. Certainly user error, but the second time this week. . ..

Yes, ironic, isn't it. . ..

And since no one wants to venture another guess, it's the Amazin' A's that have the longest streak of not being no hit. As mentioned, nearly 32 years. At least they have something to be proud of these days!

(Now watch them get no hit tonight or tomorrow).

pasportsfan - PAsportsfan - 05-17-2023

Gaylord Perry?

Bert Blyleven
Don Sutton

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 05-18-2023

No on Perry.
Sutton # 5
Blyleven # 9

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - terry - 05-18-2023

Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, or Phil Niekro?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 05-18-2023

Nieko 4
Carlton 11
Ryan no

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Leftcoast - 05-18-2023

These have to be starting pitchers with a long MLB tenure and no fear challenging hitters.  Probably not nibblers.

Cy Young?  (Most innings pitched in MLB)
Walter Johnson?
Bert Blyleven?
Don Sutton?

I'll throw in Greg Maddux as he ate up a lot of innings but he was such a nibbler I doubt he's on the list.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 05-18-2023

Already yes on Sutton and Blyleven
No on your other guesses left coast.
4 named 4 left
Two pitched for the Giants

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - terry - 05-18-2023

Robin Roberts? Jim Kaat?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 05-18-2023

Robin Roberts is # 2
No on Kaat
That’s 5. 3 to go.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Leftcoast - 05-18-2023

Cy Young and Walter Johnson were stretches since they pitched before the elevated Home Run era of baseball.

Giants?!  But not Perry?  I'm stumped.

Can't think of a Giant but maybe the ageless Bartolo Colon?  He was around a long-time and has had some fabulous HRs hit off him.  He even hit one that's famous.

There's a youtube compilation because ... of course there is.

I'm still mulling over the Giants.  Were they with the team for a cup of coffee or longer?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 05-18-2023

Cups of coffee. I was there for their first home starts for the Giants. They were for sure Hall of Famers with the Giants
