Thanks Bobk for finding that. Team captain setter Kami Miner and OH Oglivie. Please don't get injured ladies. You will be needed at Stanford in August.

If Oglivie can play OH for the US U20 National Team, maybe Hambly should consider her as an OH for Stanford. She would be the best passing OH on Stanford's team by far.

Seven players on the U.S. U20 National Team return from the 2019 Girls U18 National Team that won the gold medal at the FIVB World Championship: Setter Kami Miner, who is the team’s captain, libero Lexi Rodriguez, outside hitters Elena Oglivie, Allison Jacobs, Emily Londot, and Lindsay Krause and middle blocker Caroline Crawford.

The U.S. Women’s U20 Team will open pool play on Friday at 9:30 a.m. PT against Russia in Rotterdam. Matches will be live streamed on the VolleyballWorld YouTube channel.

That's Friday 7/9 tomorrow.

Lexi Rodriguez is listed as "L".
But it will be interesting to see if Oglivie plays front row.

Season tickets: I was pretty sure I had rolled over last year's renewal to this year, but I hadn't gotten any updates, so I gave the ticket office a call. Was told that emails about WVB renewals will be going out in the next few days, and I was indeed all set for this year.

I will check it out tomorrow at 9:30 am and probably give some commentary. I'm almost positive team captain Miner will be starting.

The bummer to me is the incoming freshmen are still not listed on Stanford's roster. Who's in charge of that? They could at least get the names with some preliminary info on the roster and save the full bio for later.

U20 USA vs Russia. High level play. First set won by US. Kami Miner looked good to me.

USA's libero is really good. Oglivie is listed as OH on roster. Based on her height compared to other players when I saw them in the huddle, Oglivie probably won't get much playing time. Also before the game in the hitting line Oglivie wasn't participating. My guess she is more of a backup libero than a OH.

FWIW, all players were standing at attention hand over their hearts singing the National Anthem prior to the start of the game.

The Turkey versus Thailand match got over 1 million views. U20 Women's Volleyball is a little more popular in some places other than Cardboard message board.

USA team led by setter Kami Miner won the first three matches of pool play in the U20 world championship. They beat Russia, Thailand, and Turkey. The matches against Russia and Turkey were a high level of volleyball. There were 800,000 viewers for the Thailand match which turned into a blowout for USA.

Kami Miner played well. IMO her setting location and decisions were first rate. I expect she will probably be Stanford’s setter for the next four years.

With one week of practice team USA was operating on all cylinders. I hope Stanford is something like this after a week of practice in August.

Rumored Stanford recruit ipar Kurt was a starter for Turkey’s team. She is a 17 year old kid playing on a U20 team.

According to the interweb, she was named the Most Valuable player of the 2020 Women's U19 Euro Championship which Turkey won.

I've heard ipar Kurt's first choice is Stanford followed by UCLA and USC. She's going to an American high school in Istanbul that teaches all classes in English. Will be entering her junior year in the fall.

Someone brought up the point she gets paid playing for a professional Turkish club. Does that compensation prevent her from an NCAA sport or is it now not an obstacle.

FWIW the letter i in her first name is a capital letter but has a dot above it. There is no equivalent on my keyboard so I use a small i.

I should have added that there are ways of adding "special characters" in Windows (and Linux), but since I didn't know how to do it off the top of my head, I didn't check.

For Windows:

One other way that works across OS's (I think) is to go somewhere where her name is spelled out (for example, her wikipedia page), and copy her name and paste it in.

Thanks for the suggestions on using letters from other languages. The easiest for me is find the name on the Internet and then copy and paste.

Volleyball is like baseball in not predicting what will happen in a future match-up based on a previous match-up.

The first time around USA beat Russia and looked good. Today Russia beat USA and Russia looked good. USA's offense was fine and Kami Miner (Kamerynn is full name) continues to be superb at setting.

Defense was the problem in blocking and serve receive. The strongest hitter on the team, Ally Batenhorst, is not a good passer. Russia served at her every time with good results for them. I would have taken Batenhorst out of the back row starting toward the end of the first set. There are enough substitutions in international rules to do that if you limit subs for other reasons.

Question for those in the know, my niece has been offered a partial scholarship for the Stanford beach team (we're all thrilled for her) which she's verbally accepted. She's a rising junior. They've given her specific direction on what they expect of her academically in order to maximize her chance of admissions, but there is no guarantee of being accepted. At the same time, my sister tells me that Stanford expects that my niece will not participate in any recruiting going forward, even though there is no guarantee of admissions.

A few questions:
- Does anyone know how common it is for recruits to not be accepted if they by and large hit the targets Stanford sets for them?
- Do recruits really just roll the dice and stop talking to other schools in hopes for the Stanford admission? If the acceptance doesn't come, it would put any athlete behind the 8-ball to restart recruiting (and probably very few scholarships remaining at that point).

I don’t follow recruiting in non-revenue sports, but I’ve followed BB and FB recruiting for 20-plus years. In most cases, coaches wouldn’t even accept a commitment until the player was admitted. (I can’t recall if the policy on that varies by coach or changed over time across all sports.) I think I can recall 4 football recruits who were not admitted after committing, one of whom ended up doing postgrad and coming the next year. I can recall one BB recruit who was required to sit out playing for a semester to ensure he’d be able to keep up academically. Recruiting under Harbaugh in 2010 not included as that was a travesty and he apparently used admissions as an excuse for football decisions.
