I don't think Manti's personal issues have anything to do with the fact that he's a little overrated as a linebacker.  NFL teams should and will draft him a later based on his team's performance in against Alabama.

I just saw that headline in the gym. This story keeps getting weirder. Why did this guy kill off LK if he was in love with Manti? Seems like he would want to keep it up.

I came to the conclusion about a week after the story broke that (a) Manti was gullible and not in on the hoax and (b) once he figured it out, he milked it for all the Voldemort votes it was worth.

Some people early on wondered whether Lennay was a beard for Te'o. Well, he may not be gay, but Tuiasasopo, who perpetrated the prank is.

I thought it was pretty clear from the original Deadspin article that Tuiasasopo was gay, but maybe I was just assuming, because what possible other reason is there for doing what he did?

I still doubt that Te'o is gay. It seems far more likely that he didn't consider this a real relationship and then just played it up for the media because it made a too-good-to-be-true story. Which, as I said before, makes him quite the cynical asshole.

I would love to see his combine interviews (him and Marquess Wilson), they could end up being true things of beauty.

Agreed.

Te'o is probably not gay, which is what made it difficult for Tuiasasopo to deal with.

It's pretty clear from what Te'o himself has said that once he learned of the hoax, he used it for his advantage.

I've seen a lot of people -- male and female, gay and straight -- have difficulties dealing with their feelings for others who didn't reciprocate those feelings.

I may get blasted for this but I've almost begun to feel sorry for the guy. Lazy journalists sounding off, John Stewart, Jay Leno... The profile of this story or amount of attention it's getting seems about the same as when it was discovered that Michael Vick was a vicious sadist.

I mean, I feel bad for him too, in a sense that what he's going through is objectively pretty awful. However, I have to say that he had it coming for playing the story up to make himself a celebrity. Mission accomplished, with the big banner and everything.

Good point. I would think that pressure would be intensified if one were in a religion that prohibited and condemned same sex relationships.

Funny. I just read the same article. The author sure sets up expectations early in the article that the guy was duped only to show that it's pretty clear he knew what was going on. Quite a character, though.
