UPDATE: Bailey is second in MLB with 19 runners thrown out in 56 games played. A's catcher Shea Langeliers is first in MLB with 26 runners caught stealing in 91 games (Langeliers is also 4th in stolen bases allowed with 61). Bailey is third in MLB in caught stealing percentage with 38.8% (49 attempts). James McCann of PGH is first with 50% caught (22 attempts), Moreno of AZ has caught 47% (36 attempts).

We are going to see if two starting pitchers and a bunch of “bulk inning” pitchers can make it through the dog days and the stretch. Giants lead majors in bullpen innings. That will increase.
Would have liked another arm- especially Montgomery or Flaherty. But that ship sailed. So, now we get to see if Giants truly are smarter than everyone else…..

Two Observations - I tried to make these separate posts but the software keeps appending them:
1) I think we can put the Pham grumbling to bed
Here's the Athletic's Andrew Baggerly and multi-year veteran covering the team on what he heard directly from the Giants:

Bailey was brought into the game as a defensive substitution but he needs to be the full time catcher as these plays decide ballgames. It certainly did last night. His offensive numbers are respectable - 256 average with 703 OPS

Thanks for the Pham comment. I am very happy the Giants passed on him. He is not the kinda guy I want on the team I follow….

Thanks for the Pham info. Joc seemed to have put the incident behind him and moved past it. The Giants clearly have created standards for their culture - maybe in part because of the Larry Baer incident - that includes a zero tolerance policy.
I follow the Mets reasonably closely and haven't heard a bad word about Pham.

I follow the Giants closely and have heard many bad words about Pham.
I guess the answer is that he should have stayed in NY….

If the Pham slap made him ineligible because of a “zero tolerance” policy that is absurd.
If they didn’t want him cause it would screw up chemistry, that’s understandable.
Crawford. A big key down the stretch. Never give up on him. He looks much better at plate and defensively since coming off IL. Last year, he finished strong after coming off IL. They need him down the stretch. He should go on the Posey plan. Play 2 sit 1. I’m sure he will get today off. That plus off day Friday will be good rest.
Conforto. 2 HRs since June 1. 399 Slg Pct. They need him to pick it up. He and Joc.
Wilmer. Never thought he’d lead teams in HRs (tied with JD) come August. Course, also thought they’d have more HR’s than they do. Somewhat of a power outage since Mid May.
Pitching. Continues to shine. Webb, Cobb and 3 bullpen games. Not sure that is sustainable through the Dog Days and Sept. But we are going to find out. I hate it from an aesthetic standpoint. But that’s irrelevant to W’s and L’s.

They are aggressively pushing Harrison. Once it was announced that his injury shelved plans to bring him up in July, i thought they still had plans for him this season. A good outing or two in Sacramento will be enough to bring him to SF as a starter (initially on a pitch count).
Stripling is the key - if he pitches well (a big if), SF can get by with one bullpen game each time through the rotation.

Such pessimism! Your post reminded me of the OF post above from the end of July. Let's look back at what's happened since July 29 against two very good clubs.

Giants-D-Backs: 3 of 4
After today's pitching duel ended with a 1-0 Giants win, San Francisco is 5-2 and two series into that "brutal" run with 20 games left to play. Plus they play the sad-sack A's this weekend.
The As always play their hardest against their cross town rivals so the next two games could be harder than they appear but I'm still taking the over on OFs dismal 9 win prediction - Way, way over. Maybe 19-8? These guys are better than the sum of their parts. Believe in the chemistry.

They only had three baserunners total...Conforto had a single and Diaz had a walk. Beck got the win, now 3-0. Manaea, Jackson, Rogers all got holds, Doval got MLB's leading 33rd save.
Giants now 12 games over .500, third in the league at 61-49, four games behind the Dodgers, all in the loss column and 1.5 games ahead of the Phillies for the first wild card slot.
Here's how the 2023 schedule compares YTD with the three world championship years in 2010, 2012 and 2014:

And yet, it’s the hitting….
The concern is more than just “they’ve been cold awhile”. This is a team built primarily on power. They lack speed. And they strike out a lot. Currently, the Giants are 13th in runs, OPS and slugging. 12th in OBP. Only Pittsburgh and Milwaukee ( how do the Brewers keep winning?) have fewer runs. Giants are 8th in HRs. But even that is a little “troubling”. They hit 46 April. 30 in May. 46 in June and July combined.
The key to their offensive fortunes lie in the veterans. Conforto - who has has in some ways a dissapointing year (.384 Slg pct ) Yaz, who has had some nice hot streaks but has had a hard time staying healthy. And seems to take some time to ramp up once back off injuries. Wade. Who looks healthier. Has swung bat much better last few. Legs look better. Crawford, see Wade. Joc. Another disappointment to date. In part injury related. Slater always does his thing vs lefties but he also can’t seem to stay on the field. Davis. Who went into a slump but appears to be coming out of it. And Wilmer, who saved July.
Estrada coming back should help the the offense . How much depends on how sound his hand is. Those injuries can linger.
After the weekend, then Giants are facing their toughest stretch. They aren’t going to win consistently scoring 3 or less runs.
I’ll pick 3 key guys moving forward : Conforto. Joc and Estrada. They need power from Conforto and Joc. They are their main lefty power threats. And they need Estrada to solidify the order a bit, especially against lefties.
Two wild cards - Pollock and Haniger. If they get anything from either it will be a brobdingnagian plus.

I would define a contrarian as a thoughtful commentator who swims against the current. Posting material for the sole purpose of stirring the pot is not being a contrarian.
