RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 10-02-2021

Buehler is pitching for the Dodgers tomorrow at 12:10 p.m., so even if the Giants lose and the Dodgers win, Buehler won't be available for Monday's (putative) 163rd game at Oracle Park.

Giants are pitching Logan Webb tomorrow (overkill) against someone with a 4.96 ERA and a 1-1 record.  Game's at 12:05 p.m.

I have to politely disagree.  I would treat today's game like a playoff elimination game.  If Giants lose today, there is no guarantee they can win a one game playoff with the Dodgers - they are hitting HRs like nobody's business.  Lose a game 163, and you put your team at risk of wasting a 106 win season with just one loss against a red-hot Cardinals.  Don't take that chance.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Goose - 10-03-2021

I like the Giant's chances today against San Diego much more than their chances against LA on Monday. Not that they cant beat LA on Monday, but it is much better not to have that experience. Go all in today to end this thing.

Another way to look at it, a loss today means one or possibly two more games.  Best to sit those days out, get rest, etc. Much easier to get a more predictable pitching schedule that way too.

Good the Giants are up, because the Dodgers are also up.  Kudos to those who said it would take 107 games to win; that does in fact look like the magic number.

Amazing play by both the Dodgers and Giants down the stretch.

The most satisfying and exhilarating regular season for the Giants in  . .  like ever!
Hard to write a more compelling script.
I'm so happy the Giants won't have to run tie-breaker game with the Dodgers and WC game with Cardinals gamut just to get to a real playoff series.  They earned that today.  Tremendous.

Tremendous sports weekend (except for 'Niners). (Still have to watch the Cardinal football game - was traveling. But my text line was going nuts for . . . well, really most of the 2H (and roller coaster of text comments mirrored those in the game thread here. And speaking of that, kudos to Marty for the giff excellence)).

Could I have been wrong? Was very happy when the 9ers passed on Jones and went for Lance, and I was ok with either Lance or Fields. But, after watching Jones this evening v Tampa Bay, he is so much more polished and ready for the pros than Lance. Today, Tre looked like a HS qb, not feeling the speed of the NFL, firing uncatchable bee-bees, and under the impression he could escape just like in non prime time college. He needs alot of PRACTICE and experience. Jones, otoh, was accurate, poised and in charge. I'm not ready to admit a mistake yet, but.......

Lex and Teejers... you should get a room.

As for the Giants... holy F****** peepee as Vinnie DiBona would say.

What?  Playing against teams like Butler, Missouri State, and Western Illinois, with their rosters of future NFL talent, didn't prepare him for the pros?  So, that's not the guy you should give up two additional years of first round picks for?  The hell you say!

Time.  It’s not gonna happen overnight.  I will be happy to see Jones do well. Cause he caught all sorts of grief when it was rumored the. 49ers were going to take him.  Through no fault of his own.

Still think Lance was right choice.  Although not sure Lance will be three first rounders better. We will start to see now.  He will get the first team reps.  And I suspect the offense will look a little different. Unfortunately, I don’t think the Niners are very good.  They have been decimated at RB and DB.  Now looks like they have lost Williams.  It could be a long year.  Especially in such a tough division.

I thought he was the right choice too.  He just needs an awful lot of practice and experience, and unfortunately he doesn't have the high-level gameday experience that Mac Jones did.

BTW, here's the current ESPN QBR ratings of select QBs with their NFL position and their QBR Rating:

1. Mahomes, 82.8
2. Stafford, 76.6
6. Darnold, 62.6
8. Cousins, 61.8
9. Brady, 61.4
10. Wilson, 60.8
14. Prescott, 58.3
16. Rodgers, 55.8
21. Garoppolo, 49.5
23. Mac Jones, 48.5
25. Goff, 40.5
29. Lawrence, 36.2
30. Wilson, 24.9
31. Mills, 17.6
32. Fields, 16.9

Trey Lance's current ESPN QBR -- if he'd had enough attempts -- places him at 39.4, ahead of all the rookie QBs except Jones.

The consensus was that Jones was a high floor/low ceiling player and Lance was a low floor/high ceiling player.  To date, that assessment has held true.  SF made the right choice.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 10-04-2021

My camera position is on a platform four floors below the press box. So I had no idea why Jimmy was out. He played ok, not great.

The Niners have a back who is fast like Mostert (Hasty), hard running (Mitchell) and hard running and a very capable pass catcher (Wilson). But all four are out. Sermon shows promise. The line is solid (not so with Williams out). A great TE and a great possession WR. They lack a big WR (they think Hurd is the guy but, what do you know, he’s always hurt).

The front seven is probably the best in football now that Hurst is back. The secondary is one of the worst (and injured). Both rookie CB’s are a couple of years away and Jimmie Ward is on an island. K W is a wonderful nickel but, heard this before?, is hurt

Stanford and the Niners are in the same boat, the USS Injury.

Coconut Oil for everyone.
What an incredible season. More to do we hope but the greatest season in my life which pre dates the Giants

Power, pitching and defense. And yes hundreds or thousands of executing the little things for 107 wins

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Sam Leopold - 10-04-2021

Well, I for one am glad the Giants won the division, even though I'm not really a Giants fan (Padres from my time living in San Diego and also recently adopted the Mariners).  I hadn't realized until recently that the Dodgers were eight-time defending NL West champions.  Also looking forward to seeing how they do in a bona fide playoff series, with their rotation of #1b to #3 starters and five or six Barry-Bonds-lite hitters in their lineup.

To paraphrase Samuel L. Jackson, "Would you have wanted a wild card game with the St. Louis Cardinals?  Because, if I were the Dodgers, I sure as sh** wouldn't want any part of a m***********' wild card game with the St. Louis Cardinals!"

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - pefloresjr - 10-04-2021

This division championship for the Giants was incredibly fun and satisfying.  It felt like the playoff games started two months ago and it has been a white knuckle, torture-filled race where it took until the final day of the season to beat out the f-ing, mercenary Dodgers.  When the Giants have made the playoffs before, I would wait to buy any swag because they might win the pennant or the series and division swag isn't that important.  But this year, after this epic battle, I am going to celebrate this division win like a World Series win.  I will wear this division win swag with pride even if we win the World Series.
Cheers,
Pete F.

Re: Giants Division Winners
The reward for winning the division is to play the winner of the Cardinal/Dodgers wild card game?  Rather than the Brewers or Braves?  Monte, let's make a deal - can I pretty please have door #2?

Re: Trey Lance's next Start
This sets up a typical Fantasy football dilemna. I'm rooting for the 49ers and Trey Lance; as a fan I'm invested in the success of both.  However, as a Fantasy Football team manager I'm picking up the Arizona defense (SFs next opponent) and the Colts D later in the month. They will feast on poor, rushed to the field Lance.

Well, the reward for not winning the division would have been to face both the Cardinals (in a single game) and the Dodgers (if they won).
