RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 02-21-2026

Thunderstorms in Honolulu - start of dual with Texas delayed until 11:00 Hawaii Time (1pm PST).

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - paloalto - 02-21-2026

Yeah I saw on the weather forecast Thunderstorms and flash flood warning.  Getting the match in today looks problematic at the moment.  With the win over UCLA I got interested in this match against Texas.  A win could possibly move Stanford to the #1 AVCA ranking on Tuesday depending how other results shake out in the tournament.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 02-21-2026

Delayed another hour.  Play will be to decision, not completion - if they get to play.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 02-21-2026

Underway, in the rain.

ETA:  Stanford won the first set on 1, 2, and 3.
Went to 23-21 on court 1.

Belardi & Sorra win on court 1. Courts 2, 4 and 5 are going to three sets.

Texas won on court 2, Stanford on court 5.
And the second set finally ended on court 3, I.Clarke & Stowell falling 29-31.  So they also have to play a third set, unless Bell & Tusher can win.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 02-21-2026

Stanford beats Texas 3-2.  The deciding point was on court 3, where the set scores were 21-13, 29-31, 15-8.
It took about an hour and 15 minutes.

Stanford vs. LMU should be around 4:30pm PST, if we're lucky.

UCLA vs. USC starting now, I believe.  If USC goes undefeated this weekend, they will be #1.

One or more duals may be bumped until tomorrow.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - paloalto - 02-21-2026

Clarke/Stowell win a decisive third set after losing an exhausting, close second set.

Stanford 3-2 over Texas.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 02-21-2026

Stanford beat LMU 3-0, winning on courts 2, 4 and 5.  Courts 1 and 3 would have gone to a third set.

And UCLA beat USC 3-1, which should improve Stanford's chances of being ranked #1 next week.

Stanford is 5-1, USC 4-2, UCLA 3-2 with one to play tomorrow.

I was a little surprised there wasn't more experimentation with the line-ups.  Instead it was the same ten players for all six duals, except Gusarova started against Cal in the first action of the season.  Tusher replaced her from there on.
And no (true) freshmen saw action.  (Unless one played in an exhibition match.) (ETA:  Elena Fisher is a redshirt freshman.)

Perhaps Coach Fuller saw a clear set of top players and just went with that.
Maybe we'll see some others in action at Stanford next weekend, against what should be much weaker opponents.

I wonder why they aren't listing the number first-place votes like they usually do?
Probably just an oversight.

Bummed I'm going to miss this weekend's home matches.  I realized I have other commitments.
And I'm going to miss the home matches in two weeks, due to travel.
I won't see them in person until April 1st.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 02-24-2026

Freshman Ivanna Rivera-Vargas posted a photo of herself recovering from hip surgery.
Guessing she may be redshirting this year.

It looks like Stanford's next four matches on Friday and Saturday will be live streamed.  Yay.  I get to watch some beach volleyball.

Congrats to the team; this is a major milestone.

The big one, of course, is the year-end ranking.  May it remain the loneliest number.

Yes, time to restart my bigtenplus subscription.

This is a week late but Troy Clardy had Coach Andrew Fuller on as one of the featured interviews on his Treecast.

I guess the match against USF is not being streamed after all

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - paloalto - 02-27-2026

Stanford mostly played the scrubs and still won 5-0 against USF.  All the matches were basically blowouts.  The only reason I can see to schedule USF is to give playing time to players who wouldn't normally get it.

I wouldn't call them "scrubs".  They rested the #1 team (Sorra & Belardi) and moved the 2s, 3s and 4s up one.  They did get some other players involved at the lower levels.

Fuller sort of addressed this in that TreeCast (just listened this morning; thanks JJJ): the "Battle of the Bay" hearkens back to the early days of the Stanford BVB, when they didn't travel outside of NorCal, and all the local teams played each other.  But yes, these teams are not in the same league as Stanford, by a long shot.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - paloalto - 02-27-2026

Stanford beats Santa Clara 5-0.

I don't know what the weather was like at Stanford. In SoCal where I live the high was 95*F, sunny with no wind.
