AVCA poll just came out.  UCLA #1, Stanford #2, USC #3, Cal Poly #4.  All four teams have two losses.

Stanford starts the day against 1-11 Houston Christian.  Why did Stanford invite them for this week's event?   There has to be some unique reason.

Stanford up 2-0 with easy wins at the #2 and #4.  Also won the first set of the remaining three matches.  This will be over soon.

We won 5-0. Interestingly, the scores followed a progression with the “tightest” game at the 1’s and the biggest blowout at the 5’s.  To be clear, all were straight set blowouts, but it’s probably a sign of depth that as you go lower and lower in the lineup, the margin becomes more lopsided.

Stanford now taking on Washington, and again, we took the first set at the 2’s and 4’s easily.

Stanford won all five matches against Long Beach State.   Tusher/Bell moved up to the #3 team and deservedly so in my opinion.

How many sets total did Stanford lose this weekend?

Somebody on VT noted that Babi Gubbins is no longer on the roster.
Not sure when she disappeared.

She is still listed as a student in the Stanford on-line directory.

I don't believe Gubbins got any playing time other than maybe a few exhibition matches.

She did play four matches against weaker opponents last year:

Seems she was really more of an indoor player converting to beach.

The matches against Houston and Washington were won 5-0 each, with all matches in straight sets (20 that’s 20-0 in sets).
Stanford beat North Florida 4-1, so we gave up 2 sets in that match (Indigo Clarke and Clara Stowell lost in three sets at the 3’s), plus Elena Fisher and Chloe Hoffman won in three sets at the 5’s, so that’s a cumulative 9-3 in sets there.  Against Long Beach State, Indigo Clarke and Clara Stowell gave up one set at the 4’s; otherwise we swept.

Putting it all together for the week end, that’s 19-1 in terms of matches and 39-4 in terms of sets.

Here's one of the reasons for the upset.  Texas has two highly ranked professional players on their team, the Pavelkova twins from the Czech Republic.  They are 20 year old "freshmen".  

The Pavelkova twins are playing in a FIVB tournament in Mexico this weekend and are in the championship match. 

I don't know the answer.  College sports has become a "win any way possible" activity.

Stanford beat #7 TCU 4-1.  The team that was doing the best this season, Bell/Tusher, is the one team that lost.
