RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 09-06-2023

On July 18, the Giants were 13 games over .500, 54-41. They had just won seven straight. They then proceeded to lose six straight, and have gone 16-28 since then. Utterly and completely grim.

I heard it was all because they sent Matos down last week for a couple of games. . . .

Your ability to refute assertions that were never made, but are close, is truly remarkable.

I explicitly said I doubt having Matos would have made a difference, just said I didn’t like sending him down when they did. But it’s not fun to point that out because it doesn’t fit the preferred version that allows you to assert I erroneously asserted Matos would have saved them.

It’s interesting, I exactly predicted the Giants August record, but I see no post from you pointing that out.

Whoa - you were wrong about August.  You said 11-16, they were 12-15. Don’t forget August has 31 days.

That’s because we knew you would.

To state the obvious, the Giants are on life support. But they play the Rockies 7 times and the Guardians three over the next 10. So, still hope….

Kapler has lost the pitching staff. Yesterday he started Wood, brought in Walker four runs down after he threw 40 pitches the day before, and Manaea, who’s been much better than Wood in down 4. Day before, went through 3 pitchers in first three innings. Sending down Beck (and taking him out of rotation) afte one bad start was bad for the team and Becks future. Great way to ruin a young pitcher.

It’s like he’s throwing at a dart board.

Whatever. The point is, my assessment of the team was correct. They suck and aren't making the playoffs.

No.  They are average.  And they are by no means out of WC race.  If they lose the series at home to Rockies, I’ll run the white flag.  Next 6 will tell the story.  5-1.

Nice try.  You stated, “I exactly predicted the Giants August record…”.  No you didn’t.  Then you brush it off with a “whatever”.

You lose all credibility when you cannot admit you posted an incorrect statement.  Then you compound your mistake when you reply with a weak rejoinder.

Who is going to take seriously when you can’t acknowledge that you are wrong sometimes.  You just spout stuff and think you are always right.  That may work for some people, but here, you need to be honest.  If you are going to make predictions, prepare for being wrong more often than not (most sports predictions are…).  There is nothing weak about admitting you are not infallible.  Give it a try.  You will feel better about yourself………

"Really didn't like sending out Matos for Yaz. The rookie has not been great, but he has held his own for sure, and he seems to have been getting more solid contact. I also felt there was a little spark to his game that was part of the youth exuberance responsible for the 3 game uptick. It's possible sending Matos out so Yaz could come back deflated the team a bit, not because they don't like Yaz, but Matos was one of the youngsters providing the team energy."

Perhaps I inferred incorrectly, but it certainly seemed that you were making a correlation between Matos energy and spark being missing when their win streak ended and they lost a couple in Atlanta. . . ..

lex24 - lex24 - 09-08-2023

Snakes beat Cubs 1-0.  Gallen three hit shutout.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 09-08-2023

Nerve-wracking 9-8 win over the Rockies tonight. And that was at Oracle, not Colorado. Matos, Flores, three hits each; HRs by Flores, Haniger, Davis and Sabol. Matos had two doubles. Brebbia got the win (3-0), Doval got his 36th save, Kyle Harrison gave up four runs, three earned in five innings.

Nearly a three hour game (2:53), and 32,448 for a Friday night Colorado game.

Let’s map out the rest of the season.

2 more with Rockies at Oracle. 2-0 . They have to sweep this series.
3 with Guardians. 2-1. Hate playing an unknown at this juncture.
4 in Colorado. 3-1 - sweep possible. Rockies are putrid. Giants have destroyed them for several years now.
2 in Ariz 1-1. (giving Giants tiebreaker with 7-6 head to head). If they get swept, it’s over.
4 in LA. 2-2. Tough. But Dodgers pitching is reeling.
3 vs Pads 2-1 Pads season over, nothing to play for.
3 vs Dodgers 2-1. Dodgers locked in at 2 seed. More concerned about readying for playoffs.

Total 14- 7. 85 wins. That will get them the third WC.
Doable. Not easy. But doable.

(Mick - Giants are 17th in attendance.  Not good.)

Wow.  A quite optimistic look forward.  Unfortunately, I cannot be so sanguine.  This season has been a major disappointment.  In my opinion, the shuffling of players must stop.  If it takes new leadership to make that happen, so be it.  I think Bruce Jenkins nailed it with this column (Baggerly had some strong observations regarding platooning as well at The Athletic).

Nope. But businesses and people have fled downtown San Francisco for a broad variety of reasons. Which means that if you want to attend a game, it's a trip into the city. And if it's a weekday game, most people who can afford tickets have jobs, so...

I see you are channeling Lee Elia…. :).

It also matters that they have no star appeal.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - lex24 - 09-09-2023

85 being my admittedly quasi arbitrary number. Giants own tiebreaker vs Marlins and Reds. Cubs own it vs Giants. DBacks will come down to the series. Giants currently lead 6-5. (Don’t ask about three way ties). So, these numbers are to get to 86 wins for Marlins and Reds. 85 for the rest. Assume Philly is in. Unless Gene Mauch takes over…..

Cubs 9-11
DBacks 11-9
Marlins 13-8
Reds 13-6
Giants 14-7

Cubs series was a killer.

DBacks and Cubs play 5 more. DBacks have 4 at Mets, 2 vs Giants, 3 vs Yankees. 3 vs White Sox. They finish with Houston. Hopefully, Houston will need those games.

Three in a row we ain’t dead yet.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 09-11-2023

Four in a row.  5-4 over Guardians.

Blake Sabol singled home Pederson to tie the game, 4-4. He stole second, Late Night Lamonte Wade knocked him in with a walkoff single.

Slater went 2 for 2. Sloppy play by Giants, three errors.

Giants now 74-70, tied with Marlins. They're 1.5 back of the Diamondbacks for the third playoff spot.
