4 games and two shutouts for the Giants
Agree it’s where it should be at 2-2

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 10-13-2021

Time to go Ron Dibble on the Dodgers and knock the snot out of them.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 10-13-2021

Dodgers aren't tearing it up.  They're at .243/.2985/.368/.663.  Of the starters, Smith and Betts are doing well, the rest have sleepy bats.  The GIants, however, are having a legendarily bad series at .184/.220/.304/.524.  Slater has two hits in three tries, Bryant and La Stella and Posey are doing great.  Crawford is average at .250.

Between them, Longoria, Dickerson, Duggar, Flores, Ruf, Solano, Wade and Casali are 3 for 62.  No joke.

Same is true for pitching.  Webb, Wood, Rogers, Doval, Castro and Alvarez have not allowed a run and just 10 hits in 19 2/3 innings.  McGee, Gausman, Garcia, Littell, DeSclefani and Leone have ERAs between 6.75 and 16.20.

Strangely, this makes me feel better for next year.  I didn't want the Giants to extend brobdingnagian contracts to Gausman or DeSclafani, though they were 14-6 and 13-7.  Jarlin Garcia seems to melt in big moments, but he had the second best WHIP on the staff, behind Jake McGee.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - lex24 - 10-13-2021

It was unrealistic to expect more than a split in LA. But last nights game was disappointing on a number of fronts. First, once again the bats didn’t show up. I lead with that because a don’t see a third shutout coming. And they are going to have to score some runs Thursday. So far, the bats have been oh so quiet. Albeit against an elite staff. Time to get them going.

The pitching last night was abysmal. In many ways not a competitive effort. DeSclafani threw a quick BP. Then Castro, Garcia and Leone all of whom looked like the moment was too big for them. Understandable to a point. They have never been in this situation. That’s a major difference between these two bullpens.

Would have been nice to have Cueto. Not that the outcome necessarily would have been different. He may have gotten raked. But at least the moment would not have been too much for him. He’d have attacked hitters. Why Dickerson was placed on the roster over him (or Estrada) is beyond me. He can’t hit a fastball right now. Hasn’t for a month. A wasted spot

Lineup I hope to see Thursday: Slater (RF) , Bryant (CF) Posey, Flores, Crawford, Longoria, Ruf, Solano, Webb.

Bullpen will add Gausman and Wood. If it’s tight late, I hope Gausman is first up. Obviously if Webb struggles at all, he will be first up. But come the 7th and close – he’s who I want out there. Only others he may be able to trust are Rogers, Alvarez’s, McGee and Doval.

Whatever happens, this has been one of the most thrilling seasons of my over 55 year love affair with the Giants. And definitely the most unexpected. So, Giants thank you for a remarkable season, And BEAT LA!

Not quite sure what this has to do with next years contracts.  Giants will go hard after Gausman.  And should.    DeSclafani and/or Wood are not going to get long term big contracts.  So it’s a question of how much and how many. If they can sign either (or both) reasonably for no more than two years that’s an attractive option.  Giants farm system has some good young arms. But they are a couple years away.

PS- once again moderators why the absurd auto change for H. U. G. E. Or for that matter anything, How old are we, 10?

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 10-13-2021

Lex, you are from UC and me from State. Of course they think we are 10. Wish I was.

I agree, Short contract for Scallopini. However I really like Wood. I would offer Gausman two years and if he goes, so long. They need to sign a couple pitchers and let some go (Littel, Garcia?). Give one of the young arms a real shot in the spring. Perhaps Delaplane.

I wouldn’t give Dickerson a nickel. I’d make Estrada the regular second baseman. He’s a potential 20 HR, 80 RBI guy. Time for Davis to putout or adios.

On schedule Wood would have a bullpen Thursday. He should be ready to pitch an inning. And Doval is rested. But as Mick says some guys aren’t delivering.

Eff that!  You can't have that attitude going into this game - or at least not articulate it publicly (and the players better not catch a whiff of that 'whatever happens is fine' attitude).

I want the Giants to be thinking along these lines:  "We've battled and held off those bastards all season long, and there is no effing way we're going to let the Dodgers get the last laugh by coming into S.F., our house, on Thursday and ending our historic season.  No.  Effing.  Way."

P.S.  You can re-post your "thank you" love note if things go south Thursday night . . .

Ain't got no dog in the race but I'll say this: The game will be won by the team having the fewest "I'm glad just to be here" guys.

(I AM rooting for Dusty in the WS.)

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 10-13-2021

I'd like the Giants to win, Webb to pitch a shutout and Austin Slater to go 5 for 5 with the cycle.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 10-13-2021

And up nine runs in the ninth somebody plunks The Hobbit in the azz.

Right, Teejers.  Cause the Giant players are reading the Cardboard and my attitude going into the game affects the team. What the  hell are you talking about. Of course I’ll be disappointed if they lose.  Tremendously. But it won’t take away from what’s been a remarkable season.  And most of my post had to do with game 4 failure and game 5 thoughts.

I’m relatively confident there aren’t any Giant players thinking they are “just happy to be here.” They’ve grinded all season, they will grind tonight. And as I said I’m my previous post BEAT LA!

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - lex24 - 10-14-2021

Robert’s opening with Knebel

Anyone the Dodgers put out is quality. So, they are going to have to hit. It does mean lineup will start off differently. I’d go Wade (Rf) Bryant (LF)  Posey Crawford Flores(1B) Longoria. Solano Yaz (CF)
Slater replaces Wade. I’d save La Stella. I think he only has 1 AB anyway given health.
My guess is he’s thinking Knebel 1. Urias 2-6. Scherzer 7. Trienen 8. Jansen 9. Let’s hope Giants can disrupt that.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Mick - 10-14-2021

Giants are a very slight favorite tonight (-111).  Dodgers are 49-34 on the road, Giants are 55-28 at home.  Giants are 13-0 in Logan Webb's home starts.  Webb discovered the changeup, throwing 38, 12 for swinging strikes.  Slater has crushed lefties the last two years (.290/.393.546/.939), he should do well. We need Ruf and Flores (both of whom normally beat up on lefties) to do well tonight.  They're 0 for 15 against the Dodgers in this series.  If the Dodgers need Kenley J. for more than three outs, they're in trouble.  The Turners are a quiet 4 for 35 in this series, they need to stay that way.  Urias was the first 20 game winner in the majors in five years (20-3).

Other fun facts:
* Since 2002, the Giants have won five Game 5 elimination games in a row.
* Dodgers allowed the fewest hits (1,107) and were second in strikeouts (1,599).
* Giants pitchers allowed the fewest walks (416) and allowed the fewest home runs (151).

Or ..

You stick with RH lineup and adjust by putting your non platoon guys up earlier. Say:
Bryant
Crawford
Posey
Flores
Longoria
Solano
Yaz
Slater.

Yes, I'd go with the latter approach (though tinker with the order - put Yaz fourth and Slater seventh and slide others).

Roberts is smart to open with a righty.  Because you KNOW the Dodgers' back end pitchers - Treinen and Janzzen - are righties, the Giants are free to make the line change substitutions once Urias comes out.  Now, starting a righty, mucks that up.

Graterol took the second inning, and we will see who pitches the bottom of the third, as he was pinch-hit for.  Meantime, Webb has pictched a one-hitter through three.

Well, that sucked.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - BostonCard - 10-14-2021

Seems somehow apropos that it was a 1 run game with the winning run coming in the ninth.  It’s a tough way to end one hell of a season.

I for one won’t shed any tears when the umps get replaced by robots.

But, what an inspiring season. And Webb sure looks like the ace we’ve been looking for.

+1

What a terrible way to end the game, let alone the season.

Coulda woulda shoulda, Wade’s long foul ball…..

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 10-14-2021

Count was 0-2. You can’t make that call. Flores probably wasn’t going to make contact but you can’t end the series on an obvious non swing.

I am now a devoted Braves/Red Sox/Astros fan.

And Dickerson needs to be released.
