Tom Loy isn't merely an N.D. reporter, he's a total homer -- he predicts N.D. for all recruits unless it's completely obvious otherwise. Think the exact opposite as Drukarev.

Now that it appears some early admissions decisions have been conveyed to players--news I cheerfully celebrate when it's good--we've officially reached the part of recruiting where we will inevitably see a very smart and hard-working kid who has loved Stanford for a long time suddenly announce that he is re-opening his recruitment. Pardon the lack of eloquence, but those announcements just flat-out suck. I'm not saying there's anything we can do about it, as Admissions should obviously be beyond the reach of the Athletic Department. I'm just saying I feel bad for those kids. Here's hoping that this year, the borderline candidates are pulling a Zach Hoffpauir and committing to a solid backup option (or staying uncommitted) until they get good news from us.Â
Since Hulk usually has a finger on this particular pulse, I'm hoping to hear that we have nothing to worry about this year.

Out of curiosity, how many of those denied admission after committing have turned into stars at other schools?
Deante Gray is maybe the only one I can name, and I don't even know if he would be classified as a star, though he is a very good player for sure.

Wondering if Chacho Ulloa has heard some good news from Coach Shaw. If so, that could tell us something about the timing of his decision.

Got to say, Ulloa could be my favorite recruit in the class if he signs. Looks like a 5 star to me based on the video evidence below, let alone a 4 star, but he's actually rated 3 star!

Here are his results from the LA Regional Opening: 5-11, 186 lbs, 40YD 4.59, Shuttle 4.20, Pwr 33.0, Vert 34.8, SPARQ 98.01. Those are fine numbers, but they don't jump off the page. AFAIK, he wasn't invited to the Opening Finals, the USAAB, UnderArmour, or Semper Fi. According to Rivals, he doesn't have an offer from U$C, UCLA, or Oregon. He also doesn't appear to be rated 4-star by any of the major recruiting services. All of that combines to tell me that he's not a 5-star recruit. Nevertheless, he does look like a baller, and I'd be happy to have him commit to Stanford.

I don't care what his combine numbers are, or who else has offered. That video shows Ulloa is one hell of a football player. He is decisive, fearless, physical, and has a nose for (taking away) the ball. He's already got 2 INTs in 3 games this year. MaxPreps stats don't count forced fumbles.
That said, I've developed a lot of respect for Notre Dame's ability to identify talent in the Kelly era. So I value an ND offer as much as any from USC, Oregon, or UCLA.

Sorry if I sounded negative. I would be happy to get Ulloa. He has the upside of a Michael Thomas or even maybe a Jordan Richards. I just don't think he's a 5-star as a recruit.

Ulloa is faster than Richards, the same height, but 30 pounds lighter. (Per NFL combine stats.) Ulloa also has some nice offers -- the ND one was cited in the thread but I like the MSU best. I'll take any DB the Spartans want.

Always tricky to project players, but I guess the question would be what were Richard's physical measurables coming out of HS? I recall Richards having a reputation for being super athletic and pretty fast, though now his reputation is kind of the opposite: a guy with somewhat limited skills (for the NFL, at least) but who gets by on intelligence.

I think we are going to be pleasantly surprised by the end result with this recruiting class. The class clearly is going to be very good, but there is upside that I think most are dismissing. The hope seems to be that Stanford can somehow get one of the elite receivers on the board, but Stanford has a legitimate shot at landing more than one. Robertson consistently tells reporters that Stanford is on top. I don't think he would do that if admission is an insurmountable problem. Burton is doing the ap work too. Why bother if he's not serious about Stanford. And then the real key is going to be the offensive performance on the field. Shaw is opening up the offense and showing high school WRs that there's a significant role for them. If you add those two guys to the current commits, this becomes a guaranteed top 10 class, more like top 7 most likely.

Speights ran for 320 yards and 5 TDs on only 15 carries (that's 21+ YPC!!) against an obviously over-matched opponent this week.

While I agree with the general tenor of your comments, I'll be very pleasantly surprised if we don't have one or two admission dings, either with players already committed or players who are strong Stanford leans. Maybe it won't be either of the two guys you mentioned (though we clearly have had players list Stanford as their leader, even commit, and then get caught up in admissions, so the confidence of recruits in their ability to get in is not always the best indicator of admission).
On the other hand, to add to your list of potential late-recruiting cycle commits, I keep wondering if Costello can convince Dylan Crawford to come on board. At one point Crawford was rumored to want to enroll early, which of course would knock Stanford out of the competition for him. But Crawford has never said much about his process, at least not that I'm aware of. And perhaps the improved play of the OL in these last two games will have an influence on some players at that position.Â

Losing Long would be the most disappointing admissions ding in my memory. That kid is an absolute stud. Long and Robertson in the same class would probably be too good to be true. Hopefully one in one class isn't either!

How many dings of high profile commits did we have last year? Under JH there seemed to be 3-5 per year, but DS and co. have gotten so good (along with admissions) at divining who will be admitted early, and at steering the borderline cases to stay stealth with their intentions until they find out there seem to be only 0-2. (OK, I am assuming a bit, but that seems directionally accurate).
