Unlike the OSUs and Alabamas and Clemsons of the world we can't just replace 5 stars with 5 stars, it's all about what guys can qualify, who of those want to come here, and who of those successfully make the transition. When Saban has a 4* senior who never makes the jump he just replaces him with a younger 4*, we can't always do that. And even then those teams have holes that make them vulnerable to the right program.

Plus, as you point out, depth is a big issue, especially with our current self-imposed roster limits. If a blue-blood has a 4* DL go down, oh well, now that 5* freshman gets more time. If it happens to us it can be completely devastating, and there's not a lot we can do about it because we're more reliant on getting guys and coaching them up than "we have more talent than you". Not that the coaching up doesn't happen at the other schools, it's just that it's easier to handle the random injuries when you're raking in the best talent every single year, rather than having bumper years and lean years.

Of course, there's probably some amount of "blame" to place on the staff for how they handle the situation once the players are in the building, but it's not like the coaches we have here haven't fielded damn good units in the past, so I don't know how much stock to put into that. I think we're just in a position where, given the realities of recruiting to Stanford, we're hurt more by randomness than other big-name programs.

But, honestly, it's shocking that Stanford has been a more consistently good program than, say, Oregon and USC. That shouldn't happen, and is a testament to Shaw's ability to manage the program these past 8 years.

Agree with your last statement.  I guess my point was that there is no reason to believe that the talent we do get wouldn't be distributed evenly between the offense and defense.  In other words, why would we have one year where all the talent is concentrated on the offense but the defense is poor, and another year where the special talent is on defense, and the offense is poor.  Wouldn't the most likely scenario be that the talent is divided between the two, and we have a good but not great offense and a good but not great defense?

Honestly, I think this is a bit of a small numbers thing and that in due time we would basically have offenses and defenses that randomly fluctuated about a certain level.

There are two factors that may contribute to non-randomness is the offense vs. defense recruiting. First, if we have a good offense (or defense), many guys may not want to come here because they are afraid they won't get to play. Granted, graduation may make this less important, but as a first order effect, having a good defense (for example) may temporarily scare off some defensive recruits. The second effect is that the coaching staff may focus or fixing problems. If they see the offense is ok, even good, but the defense is bad, they may focus on fixing the defense, so the offense decays. Yes, that probably shouldn't happen, but the problem of the moment often gets the greater effort.

Right, that's what I mean about it being stochastic. You wouldn't necessarily expect it to alternate the way that it has (2011 O better, 2012-2014 D better, 2015 O better, 2016/2017 more even) but the amount that we depend on seniors marinating in the system and developing into better players leaves us a bit more vulnerable to random turndowns (or ups) than the other programs that have as many 2010's wins as we do (which, believe it or not, is basically just the blue bloods).

Anyway, I added Moore, too, despite the fact that he's not yet officially listed. All three now on the chart with numbers adjusted.

Turns out Moore isn't on the roster because he is LDS, and taking a 2-year mission. His Twitter account says Stanford Football c/o '25.

Excited for weight changes! Camp opens up in a few days so we should see updates on the roster soon.

Thank you SO MUCH, SMF, for solving that mystery. I've updated the roster and related numbers to dis-include Matthew Moore.

Meanwhile, the mystery of IBS continues. He's still on the roster, so I went ahead and put him back on. But I don't understand how he was able to get a sixth year of eligibility, unless he had a documented injury his freshman year (AND last year), or there was some change in NCAA rules.

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - SamuelMcF - 08-02-2019

Updated weights are now on the website. Plenty of notables and commentary:

Many ILBs at respectable weight. For comparison, last year's duo of Okereke and Barton were 234 and 224 (Barton too light, semi-frequently used ILB #3 Branch was tiny at 212):
- Robinson 236
- Miezan 241
- Mangum-Farrar 240
- Beecher 237
- Damuni 258 (possibly a little out of shape after his LDS mission, so I'd look more forward to next season's "truer" playing weight after offseason S&C)
- DiCosmo 231
- Poor Andrew Pryts, who in hindsight should've probably never been moved from SS because lord knows we could've used the help back there, checks in at 225

Big risers from last season:
- Wilson 200 -> 210
- A. Fox 240 -> 252 (he's gonna be a terror off the edge)
- Butler 197 -> 205
- Head 201 -> 210
- Bonner 181 -> 188
- Simi "Arcega-"Fehoko 210 -> 226
- Mangum-Farrar 223 -> 240 (TANK)
- Walk-on RB Cameron McFarlane 200 -> 210, making the only RBs under 200 Dorian Maddox and our 2 frosh
- Walk-on OLB Caleb Phillips 215 -> 225
- Walk-on TE TaeVeon Le 230 -> 241, no longer clearly the smallest guy in the TE room
- Powell 281 -> 294
- Hamilton 287 -> 301
- Walk-on OL Grant Pease, who started the spring game and might earn a scholarship if/when Trey Stratford medically retires (see below): 250 -> 272
- Harrington 250 -> 257
- Parkinson 240 -> 251, and looks like a Greek god (our top 3 TEs all weigh 250+, good lord)
- Reid 231 -> 239
- Walk-on DE Trey Labounty 235 -> 245

Our projected starting OL:
Little - Hamilton - Dalman - Powell - Sarell
 309       301          284        297      308
Primary backup Hattis is also at 297.

Trey Stratford, a scholarship OL, has lost almost 20 lbs from last season and is now listed at 240. I hope everything's ok with him, but fear it isn't. As a result of awful recruiting malpractice, this will mean we effectively have an inexcusable OL gap year (Carberry was rumored to have been horrified at the situation when he arrived). Luckily the cavalry are coming (but likely a year too late); the 5 frosh are all pretty beefy already, Pease has garnered praise and is the first frosh walk-on OL to actually play in a game since who even knows when, and the '20 OL class is already in pretty good shape.

Frosh OL weights:
OT: Rouse 291, Miller 292 (surprised the heck out of me; I thought he was in the 260's!)
OG: Bragg 286, Hornibrook 279
C: Nugent 284
These are playable, albeit slightly light, weights as is; I'll really be satisfied after seeing the results of a full offseason of S&C.

Other notable frosh measurables besides the ILBs mentioned above:
- Elijah "Arcega-"Higgins 6'3" 220
- Josh Pakola 6'3" 257 (does he bulk up 15-20lbs and play DE?)
- Tristan "Just Start Me At Strong Safety From Day 1" Sinclair 6'2" 207

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - OutsiderFan - 08-02-2019

What is up with OL Trey Stratford?  He's now listed at 240.  I thought he was small on last year's roster, at 258. Are they making him into a FB or something?

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - BobK - 08-02-2019

I don’t believe Stratford was able to practice much if at all last season

TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS:
"Tristan "Just Start Me At Strong Safety From Day 1" Sinclair 6'2" 207"
-- We need help badly at that spot, and he played enough RB in H.S. to show some speed.
Hits like a truck.  Offers instant impact on special teams.   The next John Lynch.  PLAY HIM.

Me three.  I just watched his highlights last night. He's listed at 6-2 207, which is great size for a Safety.  Physically I'm sure he is ready to play, so the question is can he learn his role on defense fast enough to play a lot as a True Frosh.

Sinclair reminds me of Taylor Rapp, the former Frosh DPOY for UW a few years ago who was just drafted in April. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me why Stanford would have him as an ILB.

What's the opposite of totally shocked?

Very good to see the clearly obviously needed move was made.  Would love to know if Pakola is pushing other DEs in practices now. Seems like an exceptional athlete for a DE based on the high school evidence.

Yes, thank goodness. Sorely needed. Hoping DiCosmo slips out to OLB to fill the gap, provided the other 2 ILBs show enough promise.

In general I'd find it pretty hard for a true frosh DE to get significant PT, especially given the 4+ guys already entrenched at the position. We saw what happened with Horrible Harry as a freshman forced to play (and they were roughly the same size coming in). Thomas Booker, the exception, had about 20lbs on him at this stage. Now if he can push the other possible rotational guys (in likely order: Schaffer, Johnson, Peek, Boles?) that's certainly a win.

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - BostonCard - 08-09-2019

He wasn’t moved to DT, though, right? The tweet says “interior DL” but that doesn’t make sense.

I don’t know... if Sinclair moves out to safety, moving DiCosmo to OLB changes one gap for another.  Generally our two-class haul at OLB is fine even if Herron is the only outside backer in his class (though that does upgrade the importance of getting more in the class of 2020).

Maybe I’m just a bit defensive about ILB’s after the gap

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 08-10-2019

Changed Pakola's position on the chart.

I wonder why they waited until now to make the change. I suppose it is possible that they intended keeping him at OLB until today, but I doubt it.

I also wonder if moving Sinclair is on the coaches' radar, as opposed to merely ours. I hope so. It would suddenly make our 2019 defensive recruiting class remarkably balanced (save DT).

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 08-18-2019

Perhaps this has been reported elsewhere, and I am totally out of touch, but sophomore Kendall Williamson and senior J.J. Parson are now listed as safeties.

Interesting move that suggests that the coaches are bullish on one or more of the true freshman CBs given that this is likely Paulson Adebo's last year on the team. Moreover, since we play in nickel so often, I wonder who is tagged to play there. I always assumed it was Williamson since our nickel is almost always a CB. But perhaps it will still be Williamson as a safety.

At any rate, despite some positive comments about Stuart Head, I'm guessing that Williamson will start at safety opposite Antoine, though I will wait for confirmation.

Also, as I guessed long ago, freshman Jonathan McGill is now listed solely as safety. And none of the remaining CBs are listed as "cornerback/safety."

Also, senior Henry Hattis is now listed as a guard. Did not see that coming at all.

Chart accordingly updated for all three changes.

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - OutsiderFan - 08-19-2019

Some thoughts on Williamson and Hattis...

My belief was Williamson would be moved to Safety this year, based on the reps he got at CB last year, and his High School vids. This weekend I read a Rivals story indicating how well Williamson is performing at Safety during these August practices. Williamson is too physical of a player for CB IMO. His desire to hit and be a ball hawk is better suited for Safety.

Hattis being moved to Guard is probably as much based on an assumption/hope that he isn't needed at Tackle, because of how well Walter Rouse looks as a Frosh, as Hattis being a permanent Guard. He can play Tackle if need be.

There is now some evidence for why Shaw feels good about the OL. If you consider Rouse and Bragg as superior to your average True Frosh OL, it actually looks like there might actually be enough OL depth to get through a season provided low (not no) injury attrition.

You might have a Top 8 OL of Little, Sarrel, Dalman, Hamilton, Powell, Hattis, Rouse, Bragg. Most college programs try to identify their 7 best OL and play them the majority of time.  If Stanford has 8 guys they feel comfortable with, that's actually decent depth, if not overall numbers of available bodies.

Posted elsewhere, but repeated here...

Since it does come from the SID.

RB:

Quote:The position battle among Stanford’s three senior / fifth-year senior running backs is an oft-asked question in the post McCaffrey-Love era, though the surprise of this training camp has been the game-ready impacts that freshmen Austin Jones and Nathaniel Peat could have. They are dynamic and competitive. At least five-deep, this year’s #RBeasts are a remarkably talented group with a diversity of skill sets.

WR:

Quote:With JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Trenton Irwin departed to the NFL, there is not only a high level of production but also leadership to replace. Sophomore Michael Wilson and junior Connor Wedington, each with just one season of playing experience under their belts, have grabbed the reins.

DBs:

Quote:ou know about Preseason AP All-America junior cornerback Paulson Adebo and senior free safety and team leader Malik Antoine. Get to know sophomore strong safety Kendall Williamson, who can run and move like few safeties who have come through The Farm. A pair of true freshmen in cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly and safety Jonathan McGill have played beyond their years in this training camp and are making a push to get on the field early.

Forgot to mention this tidbit on the ILBs:

Quote:Sophomore Jacob Mangum-Farrar and senior Curtis Robinson are new faces at inside linebacker taking us to athletically exciting places, after four seniors graduated from last year’s team. Both players redshirted last year (Curtis then at outside linebacker) and they can flash in ways that may remind you of Shayne Skov. Senior Andrew Pryts has also impressed with his level of mastery of the defense, after having moved from safety.

Robinson has already been pencilled in, but you wonder if JMF becomes the other ILB starter.

From what I heard about the open practices, Miezan sat out (minor, he'll be back soon). Purely on reps alone it looks like Robinson/JMF are likely the two starters.

Whatever happened to Justus Woods? He was a big recruit, wasn't he? But in discussing RBs, he's never mentioned, even though he has a year of team workouts under his belt. Is he trending down?
