Especially since #1 Oregon and #2 Baylor both lost tonight.

Is this the new #1 team in the country?!?

We became discombobulated when Williams went down with a 10 point lead.
Williams has been sitting with an ice pack on her knee.
Well, the #1 and the #2 went down tonight, and the #3 (us) beat another top ten team. Are we the new #1?

That was an ugly finish to the game. I hate when they go to the “kill the clock” offense. Even before Kianna left the game they were spending too much time dribbling around the court.

Glad the game was 40 minutes and not 42 minutes, because we narrowly averted a disaster there. From 64-50 with 5 min left to a one possession game, with Mississippi State having a chance to tie it. 67-62 is the final.
So with both Oregon and Baylor losing, do we back into the #1 ranking?

Final 67-62. We escaped. 20 turnovers. Rebounding and FT shooting saved us.

Haley Jones leading scorer with 13, tied for the lead in rebounds with 8, and led the team with 4 assists.
Nadia Fingall gets tournament MVP. Even thought tonight she did not score. She was critical in the first two games and played awesome defense and rebounded well in the final.

Hey, we beat #10. That's not "backing in."

Anyone who witnessed that near-collapse on TV would probably not vote us #1. But thankfully, very few people will see anything other than the final score.
The play-by-play showed Jones missing several layups in the last 4 minutes. Were they bunnies or contested?

Williams with 12.
Lexie Hull with 11.
Belicista with 10.

Fair. And I think Syracuse was ranked as well. On the other hand, it was more like “we survived” #10.
This is a good team and fun to watch, but i don’t think it’s the best team in the country.

Jones's shots were contested. The officiating was also very suspect. They called numerous charges in which the MSU player was not set or inside the restricted area. And those charges are turnovers, which contributed to our 20 turnovers to their 6. This is what MSU does, but they got some help from the officials.
Against all of those turnovers, we out rebounded them 51 to 31. We had 15 O boards to their 6. That went a long ways to making up for the turnovers.
Both teams made 24 baskets. 12 of ours were assisted, only 7 of theirs. We were clearly passing better than they did.
We shot 39%, they shot 35%.
They had the edge with three pointers. Both teams made five but they did it with 14 shots while we took 19.
We made 14 points in free throws, they made 9.
We had 36 points in the paint to their 28. That is very impressive considering their size inside and their take-it-to-the-rim guards. We were better on that front.
They had 14 points off turnovers, we had 4. It could have been worse considering they had a 14 turnover advantage.
All in all, we led in just about every category except turnovers, which is what we would have expected given MSU's style of play. And this was exacerbated I think by Williams going down with 3 minutes left.
We outplayed the team that the computer rankings had as #2 in the country, with Carrington and Dodson out, with Williams going down, and with freshmen getting 58 minutes of playtime. At the beginning of the season we wondered if the freshmen could be integrated into the team this year. And the answer is emphatically yes. They will just get better.
The last 3 minutes was not pretty, but the team was in shock at Williams going down, and they found a way to win.

A win over a top 10 team, even if it was close, is better than the defeats suffered by the #1 and #2 teams. So, yeah, Stanford should be #1.

Win 67-62. The last 5 minutes was just terrible. They're going to have to do a lot of film review. When Williams went out with injury, no one seemed to be able to bring the ball up the floor or run the offense. Wilson and Brown both turned the ball over under pressure. Jones tried to run the point but players weren't really cutting effectively and she had not so good options. Fingall just got tournament MVP.
Williams had a lot of trouble with the press also - finished with 8 to's.
answering someone's question Jones layup attempts were contestedor desperation shots

We have got to learn to put teams away once we get a good lead in the 2nd half. I think this is the third game where we let the other team come back from a double digit lead and making for a nail-biter finish. We need to keep our foot on the accelerator and keep doing what what gave us the lead in the first place.
