RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - Phogge - 12-18-2019

If say, he has an imaginary girlfriend at WSU and she puts the screws on him that she will break up if he doesn’t transfer is this an NCAA rule violation?

This has the makings of an SNL skit.

Especially what Leach will say about his girlfriend.

Also worth noting that Costello has not been right all season. A return to his 2018 form would be a substantial upgrade to the passing game (above even the 2019 version of Mills).  I might believe that Mills has more potential, but Costello has put together a more complete season.

Effective OL play and having JJ as a target was very helpful to KJ during the 2017 and 2018 season's. If Mills teammates play well I expect his 2020 QB performance will be sensational.

Scooter Harrington appears to be withdrawing from the transfer portal. He's coming back. Parkinson going pro may have influenced his decision.

Apparently Andrew Pyrts is now in the transfer portal. The word is that Shaw has told the prospective 5th year seniors it is OK to put their name into the portal and see if there is a better deal out there for them. However, after a certain date a return to Stanford will not be available.

I’m starting to wonder how much of this mass portaling is merely smart seniors doing their due diligence.

I guess we won't know until deadlines pass

Once again, there is no deadline for submitting your name to the transfer portal. Coach Shaw may have asked the seniors to let him know by a certain date so that he can make scholarship commitments. But the NCAA places no restrictions on when a player may enter the portal. It's always open.

RE: 5th Year Decision Thread - BostonCard - 12-23-2019

presumably players who show up to spring practice are staying.

Perhaps not, but I believe the former school isn't required to keep a scholarship available once you enter.

from Jan 2019 (emphasis added)

Quote:Entering the NCAA transfer portal is a necessary first step for any athlete who wishes to transfer to another institution. Once an athlete decides to transfer and is added to the database, any coach can contact the athlete. The process is now in the hands of athletes–past situations where universities blocked talented players from leaving are no longer permissible. However, schools are now allowed to cancel the scholarships of players at the end of the semester in which they expressed their intent to transfer.

Article in TOS (free) with interviews with Williams suggests this is accurate

https://247sports.com/Article/Stanford-football-transfer-portal-Andrew-Pryts-starters-141028264/

Quote:[Michael] Williams, a two-year starter, told 247Sports that this big run of transfer portal entrants was somewhat expected in Palo Alto. In fact, head coach David Shaw encouraged his players to explore their options knowing how hard it can be to get into graduate school. Williams labeled potential entry into some Stanford graduate programs as "nearly impossible."

He said Shaw left the door open for the team's fifth-year seniors to return to school if they want.
“He wants to make the best decisions for us,” Williams said. “He wants us to make the best decisions for ourselves. I appreciate him for it. He actually told me: ‘Visit anywhere you want. Do anything you want to do. Just make the best decision for you. If Stanford is the best decision for you then I know you’ll come.'”

So what happens if all these portal guys don’t have better offers? How do Hamilton, Hattis, Swann, Williams, and Eboh return along with the Frosh class? How will there be enough scholarships?

Fifth year scholarships aren't guaranteed, so some players will be told that there is no room for them if players like Williams and Swann decide to come back.  This is why Shaw has told the players putting their name in the transfer portal that after a certain date, they won't be guaranteed a slot if they chose to come back.  At some point he has to tell other players that they either do or do not have a spot on the team, which will be dependent on the availability of scholarships and specifically on whether certain players in the portal chose to stay in the portal.

Basically, at this point, players are told one of three things:
1) There will be a spot on the team for you so long as you let us know that you will take it by a certain date.
2) There may be a spot on the team for you depending on who transfers out.  We will let you know for sure by a certain date.  In the meantime, if you want to explore other options, we are happy to support you.
3) Congratulations on your Stanford diploma, we are happy to help you find a grad school or a job on your way out.

Finally someone has finally laid the issue out so it seems pretty clear,

Thank you, but I have one remaining question.  If an athlete, or any student for that matter completes all requirements for their degree and graduation by the end of their 4th year, are they required to graduate and then return to be contingent upon acceptance into a Stanford Graduate Program?  If true it would further explain why guys who have a year of eligibility left are looking elsewhere -  Guys who have a year left and have not completed their requirements can return if there is a place for them as I understand it, if not, they move on.  I suppose it may be possible today to arrange to leave one graduation requirement for the Fall quarter of your fifth year, come back, play that quarter then move on.

Frankly football is a tough sport, hard on the body and the bulk of the guys will not move on and play for the big bucks.  My guess is that a number of guys would like to comeback and play one more years with their friends, but they are also at the point where they know they won't play on Sunday so they start thinking about the next step.  Whether they like to admit it or not, they all know that for many there is a price to be paid for the years of playing football when they get older.

A big factor to consider is that their friends are mostly gone too, one way or another. Many of the guys that they went through school and football with are gone, because they graduated. Even the ones that are still at Stanford are doing "other things". The fifth year guys are the "old men" of the team, and that isn't necessarily a fun experience. Some guys like it, some guys don't. For many, it just isn't "the same", and that makes it much less attractive. If there is some personal football goal that one really wants to reach, then it may be worth all the effort. Otherwise, it may just be a lot of pain for no real gain.
