so much for the theory on her graduate school preference. This appears to have been screened based upon consistent final four appearances the past 1 or 2 years...wishing her the best except when we play her team.

Those choices are...interesting.  Baylor?  Ick.  My personal feelings on that.  UConn.  Same because when do they need the help and all that , and given the talent they always have and how Geno basically never plays anyone but his top 6 or maybe, maybe 7, a decent chance she doesn't get that much time there, not with the way the season is shaping up to be (or not be) with probably less prep time than usual to learn a new system.  Oregon?  A conference rival?  Huh.  I feel no obligation to root for former players who choose to play for those teams, so I ain't gonna.  Good luck and all, but no, just no.

I'm guessing she ends up at Baylor.  They will still have a good team, need guards and they have done a good job integrating graduate transfers into key contributors.  Oregon is a maybe but their team will be so young.  I agree that UConn seems a very odd choice given that their starters play so many minutes and its almost impossible to see her beating out Williams or Westbrook for a starting spot.

This is disappointing especially because there is a scholarship available... the 3 choices are interesting... at least we know now that she isn’t returning...

Graves has said he is looking for a grad transfer guard

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - 2006alum - 04-29-2020

Very strange list, for the reasons BosCard and Chimera mentioned. And agreed that of the three, UConn doesn't make much sense given Geno's disinclination to give starter minutes to first-year players and the fact that they run a system offense and Carrington's at her best improvising in traffic.

Wish we could find out what really happened here, because part of me wondered whether she stopped playing not because her knee required her to, but because she wanted to preserve a fifth-year option. Given her retweet about coaches needing to understand their players, it does make me wonder whether something more happened, now that there was a scholly available for her.

Regardless, wish her the best. She gave us some real memorable highlights during a relatively rough patch in Stanford's WCBB history.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - BosCard - 04-29-2020

I wish Carrington well, however I am excited for more playing time for Jump and Emma-Nnopu.  The playing time investment next year will hopefully pay off in 2 more years of contributions for Jump and 3 more years of contributions for Emma-Nnopu.

If you have read Brittany Greiner’s autobiography, you would wonder how DiJonai could stomach Mulkey.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - BobK - 04-29-2020

Well many of us heard what Mulkey said so
Nastily about those who are gay.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - crackpot - 04-29-2020

All of these options seem like the ultimate effew to Stanford.

They do, don't they.

Something got off the rails here, and I suspect it occurred a while ago.  I mean, even when Carrington was playing she had the quickest hook I'd ever seen from Tara, particularly for a star player.  I hate it when players don't like Stanford/their team/their coach to the point they choose to leave (or are forced to leave).

Either way, it sucks.  At least to this fan.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - Baez87 - 04-29-2020

Dijonai gave us some memorable moments and helped us win games. We will probably never know what happened with her not getting a spot on the team (or wanting one). A friend of mine used to say, "When a relationship gets cross threaded, it’s almost impossible to get it right again." I was ambivalent about her return. She brought a lot of excitement to the game, but she also brought a lot of surgery with her, and that can prevents a team from making a firm commitment. So, good luck to Dijonai! I hope she has a good year (unless she plays against us) with good health throughout the season.
Now it’s time to focus on our team!

Prefer she goes to Baylor out of the 3. Yukon last.

Merged this thread into our longer off-season thread that's had an ongoing discussion about Carrington's grad transfer status.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - crackpot - 04-30-2020

No way she's going anywhere other than Oregon.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - 81alum - 04-30-2020

This is sad.  I guess I was just refusing to believe that this could be about friction with her coaches, but now it is clear.  You folks who doubted my belief that this was about academic reasons were correct.  There is nothing in those three choices that indicate this is a decision based on a grad school.  However, everyone who felt this was about the lack of scholarships and a prior commitment to Anna Wilson were also proved wrong by the Moschkau transfer.  That leaves only one explanation--something was not right in the Carrington/coaching relationship.

Couple that with Tara's comments earlier this year in a pre game radio interview that "I'm not a fan of grad transfers, I think players should show loyalty."

And couple that with Carrington sitting out most of this season--far beyond any obvious injury we fans could detect that  seemed to persist.  Of course, we are not her doctors.

And couple that with the almost paranoid increase in coaches refusing to talk about player health and offering brusque or rude answers when asked.

Couple that with Dodson's behavior and statement that she was coming back this season "because she wanted to play with Nadia" before Nadia graduated --as if it should be a player decision whether or not they are going to play (when they are healthy.)

And then the kicker--Stanford with Carrington is probably just as likely to win a national championship next year as the three schools she is contemplating--MORE likely than Oregon, surly.  If this were ONLY about going out with a championship, there is no particular reason for her to transfer.

No smoking gun is there, but it all adds up to me.  Something went wrong in that relationship and I imagine Tara has known since last fall that Carrington was leaving.  Perhaps Carrington was not injured for a significant part of the year, and Tara expected her to come back and expend her eligibility as Dodson did, and Carrington refused.  Just a  guess, but a  plausible one.

In general, I think grad transfers are really, really at odds with Tara's coaching style.  Stanford is never going to GET grad transfers into the WBB program, and we are increasingly SENDING grad transfers to other places.  The fact that our players take so many summer courses and come in with AP credits means many of them are going to be eligible to graduate in 3 years--cashing in on that 40 year degree without having to honor a four year commitment.  So it is more of an option than ever before.

The injury situation has compounded matters.  It used to be that coaches had to be restrained from pushing players to play before they were fully healed.  But now the situation could be reversed.  Players sometimes have incentives NOT to play even when they ARE fully healed.  At a place like Stanford where the degree is so valuable, players could make strategic decisions not to play even when they can, using long-healed injuries as excuses.  Not saying that I know that is what happened in this case--but it is easy to see how the system is ripe for abuse.

I will miss Carrington as a player.  I missed Lili Thompson as a player.  Marta Sniezek was probably not as badly missed as a player, although given how popular she was as a person she must have been missed as a teammate.  But her situation seems to have been quite parallel to Carrington's.  Was she really injured all her senior year?  Who believes that?

We have now glimpsed the rise of free-agency in WBB, and I have to say I don't like what I see.

As far as where I hope Carrington goes, I just hope it is not Oregon.  I don't want to have to play against her--ever if possible--but certainly not 2-3 times.  Each time would break my heart a little.  At least we never had to play against Lili or Marta.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - Jskass - 04-30-2020

I know nothing of the specifics here. However, given Notre Dame's move and ability to rein in Miles and Citron, I hope the hiring freeze is lifted soon so we can attract an energetic and magnetic assistant coach (Karlie or otherwise) and continue to move forward. There may be some subtle pressure soon to accelerate succession planning and action if Ivey wins games...

I think the succession planning was completed probably 4 years ago--or whenever Kate turned down USC and was promoted to Associate Head Coach.  I would be completely shocked if whenever Tara retires (and no sign of that yet) Kate did not succeed her.

RE: WBB: Off-season thread - BosCard - 04-30-2020

I might be alone here but I am not sure that Carrington was that critical of a player for us next year.  Yes she is a good player who would have made our team better overall.  BUT, if there was some sort of draft and you got to pick the players you wanted to keep in order of importance, she might be the seventh player on my list (Williams, Lexie and all four freshman would be ahead of her).  Plus it's not clear to me that she would have been a starter next year.  She is a 2/3 and I think we would have seen Lexie and Jones in those spots.  Then Carrington would be competing with playing time with the other 2/3's on our team.  Wilson is a better defender.  Lacie is a better 3-point shooter and defender.  Jump is definitely a better 3-point shooter and who know's about Emma-Nnopu but she comes in with a reputation for defense, rebounding and slashing.  Now Carrington is the best rebounder and slasher out of that group of 2/3's.  But, I think we will have rebounding covered by Belibi, Prechtel, Dodson and Brink.  We will miss Carrington's slashing but I would rather see Jones get those slashing attempts because she is so good at that and because I would like her to get the reps for her junior and senior seasons.
