Also, we are not a wannabe Ohio State.  Just “Stanford University” will do.

Maybe Shaw is trying Haase's Ziaire recruiting strategy.   Just 342 more to go (or 29 if it's just weekly)

Maybe its short for "... the one, the only, the truly incomparable, Leland Stanford Junior University..."

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 01-25-2022

I couldn't find the recruiting class of 2022 thread, so I hope it's not too much of a faux pas to ask here whether there's any news on Collin Wright.  After already losing Ramsey, it would be disappointing to have Wright defect as well.  He looks like a solid player who could contribute to the program.

RE: Class of 2023 - SamuelMcF - 01-25-2022

A fun tidbit: in case it wasn't clear to him how important he is, TE target Walker Lyons has now been visited by coach Turner FIVE TIMES in the last two months.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 01-25-2022

Turner coaches a position that has only 3 players on the roster (including scholarship and walk-on) and I wouldn't be surprised if Stanford ends up with only 1 recruit at that position in the 2023 class (the same Walker Lyons whom Turner has visited 5 times).  The problem is not that Turner visited 5 times.  The problem is that the team uses a coaching staff spot to coach/recruit so few players on the roster.

Disagree.

Forgetting that our only current 2023 commit, Jaden Platt, is also a TE gave me a good chuckle. Nice job. Sam Roush is already on campus as an early enrollee as well.

We will thus clearly be taking 2 TEs ontop of the 2 in 2022, which will lead to having 6 TEs on the roster in short order (factoring in Yurosek to the NFL soon). Ontop of developing Yurosek into another great Stanford TE, Turner is reloading the room in a big way. I personally thought Shield Taylor would be a TE as well, but looks like that hasn't happened (yet). We use 2-3 TE sets a LOT, so it makes sense to have a position coach for that position.

Turner is also the regional recruiter for a bunch of midwest states, the Sacramento area, and south Florida. He has visited many (in fact almost exclusively non-TE) prospects in those states as part of his recruiting responsibilities.

Personally, I would argue having Alamar as a full-time ST coach is the true "waste of a spot" from an allocation perspective, but his ST units have been consistently above average to very good so I can't really be that upset.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 01-25-2022

Oops.  Sorry for the omission, but glad I made you laugh.

RE: Class of 2023 - Papa John - 01-25-2022

Turner has double the reason to visit Walker Lyons, who is both a TE (as we all now know) and lives in the Sacramento area. 247sports has a single crystal ball for Mississippi, and back in November he listed his final 11 as UCLA, Mississippi, Ohio State, USC, Stanford, Washington, Michigan, Alabama, Oregon, BYU and Texas. I would hope that Ari Patu is also part of the recruiting strategy for Stanford.

I believe his younger brother is Ryder Lyons, who is a class of 2026 QB and already has offers from BYU and Utah.

From what I can tell, Walker Lyons is LDS--I think his dad played at BYU--which leads me to the question as to whether or not Walker is, in effect, a class of 2025 recruit? Anybody have more details?

RE: Class of 2023 - slide - 01-26-2022

still hard to fathom Turner's whiff on Brock Bowers.

on coaching duties, I like one of the old setups of something like Int OL coach with OTs and TEs with the other OL/TE coach.  the former coach would handle/be run game coordinator.

Did Bowers have interest in Stanford?  And could he have gotten in?  If so, that’s a whiff of epic proportion.  The guy is a beast.

No AP classes, though arguments could be made that if we had been on him earlier he would've been willing to change his class schedule - not sure on that part.

RE: Class of 2023 - BobK - 01-26-2022

My inside was no AP. But Samuel makes a good point of that I don't know.

yes on interest.  I'd heard the class schedule too, but I then later learned the hesitancy was due to coach evaluation.  that evaluation later changed but by then it was too late.

it is not the 1st time it has played out this way.  NPF is still the poster child.

For those unaware: NPF = Nicolas Petit-Frere, Ohio State super-stud OL with fantastic grades and interest who had been teed up to staff as a sophomore only to be ignored for way too long.

and the epilogue.  Shaw led an in-person, futile, late wooing of NPF (and his HS coach) in Tampa which was not well-received.  evidently the story still makes the rounds with local coaches.

RE: Class of 2023 - Phogge - 01-26-2022

Bowers is exactly where he should be. NFL talent in an ESPN sponsored league which plays its games when a bunch of people are watching coast to coast.

RE: Class of 2023 - SamuelMcF - 02-02-2022

2 offers in the past couple days: TE Duce Robinson (AZ, unconfirmed but I'm pretty sure), OLB Trey Wilson (TX). Robinson has a baseball offer too.
