My son, who knows way more about basketball than his old man, believes Tara is the best x and o college coach in the country, men's or women's. On several occasions, she has devoted two or even three defenders to shut down a star, daring the others to beat us. If she decided in this game to let their star shoot step back mid range jumpers so we could shut down the other options, that was almost certainly our best option. And if Tara stuck with the strategy as the game wore on despite that star hitting those shots, well . . . it was working.

If Tara decides the best strategy is to shut down the other team's bestbest player even though that opens things up for others, that will almost certainly be the best option in that game, too. Different strokes . . .

Tara will put our players in the best position to win. It gets harder when the opponent has a star and other stars, of course, so we won't always win. But if we lose it will almost certainly not be due to scouting or strategic deficiencies.

I think this may be correct.

I noticed during the game that when Jones was guarding Onyenwere and Onyenwere tried the mid range jumper--usually on a step back or spin move--Jones backed up half a step and never raised her arms.  I kept thinking that was odd--everyone else defends by at least raising arms straight up, but Haley just watched O shoot.  That had to be coaching and intentional.  So long as O took the kind of shots we wanted her to take, we just let her have them.  It was so odd to see the defender's arms not going up.

good point. i wondered about that as well. another possible factor is that onyenwere drew a few fouls by ripping through our defenders' straight-up arms as she shot (see james harden), so maybe tara told haley to avoid that possibility.

Tara will be quick to credit her assistants who scout opponents. She has already offered high praise for the work of new assistant Britney Anderson.

It also gets more challenging when facing opponents who are unfamiliar and with little time to prepare. Stanford's coaches know the P12 opponents and their players well. They can draw on a pretty big body of knowledge. Look at the opponent point totals since the loss to UCLA - 59, 49, 49, 48, 54, 41, 58, 61, 41, 48, 33, 53, 45, 55. That is some fierce and effective defense! Stanford is ranked 2nd in the country in FG % defense (Baylor is #1 and UConn is #5) and 8th in the country in scoring defense (UConn is #4 and Baylor is #12).

Stanford will have less time and less knowledge available to prepare for NCAA tournament opponents. But Tara is the best in the business at scouting and prep. And Stanford will be a nightmare for other teams to scout and prepare for as well.

I have never seen Coach Close get so emotional, breaking down when talking about how she and the team let Onyenwere down in this game.
