Cal just lost 2 o f3 to ASU. 4 out of their 9 hitters are hitting over 300. Hopefully the intensity with U of A for can be duplicated to this series. Need to kick them when they are down. I am sure they will be up because it is Stanford!

This is what happens when you are at one level, and you play down to the level of competition that is lesser. No way SJSU should have been let back in this game. Cal is not going to roll over for them this weekend, and Cal is the caliber of team you sweep!

Stanford gave up leads of 6-2 and 7-4. But thanks to a walk off HR from Kody Huff, they *did* win the game.

I seem to recall a year when we were pretty darned good on week end series, but lost an inordinate amount of Wednesday games. I just can't remember what year it was.

Well, it wasn't recently.
Our midweek game records, followed by overall records, for the past few years.
2021: 3-2 27-10 (in progress, one more midweek game vs cal)
2020: 1-2 5-11 (pandemic shortened season)
2019: 8-1 45-14
2018: 9-0 46-12
2017: 10-0 42-16 (Marquess' last year)
2016: 8-3 31-23 (the last year we missed tourney)
Previous years Stanford won 40+ games were 2012, 2008, 1995-2004
Issues that affect mid-week game records include randomness (lots of this in baseball), pitching depth, and exactly how the coach treats those games.
Certainly Stanford has pitching depth issues this year. Though while they've given up 5.6 runs/game in the midweek games, 15 came in one outing.

As a Little League scorekeeper for 10 years, last night's game reminded me of the Minors division, which is for 8-10 year-olds who are experiencing kid pitch for the first time. Lots of runs scored via bases-loaded walks, HBP. It was just a wacky game, which seems to be the par for mid-week games.
Thankful for a win and enjoyed Troy's call of the walk-off. Stay sane, indeed.

Come on Troy, if you are the same Troy who was calling the game last night. After that 3 or 4th, I cannot recall, when their relief pitcher came in and threw 11 pitches, which all were a disaster. This looked destined to be a blow out! When you are lulled to sleep by another team, you are less likely to play to a level where SJSU should have been blown out. All the pitcher needed to do was pitch to contact, although I will give it SJSU they can hit as a team.
You saw it last night, Robinson was pissed because he walked. These players saw that the pitching was sub par and flied out on balls they should have hit for an extra base hit.
In regards to pitching depth, well it is up to those pitchers who may not see a lot of time on the weekend to step up. No coach is going to say let's throw away a mid week to game for the sake of just getting work done. They are going to expect to win those games despite who is being thrown out there.
This is the time for this team to throw it out there every game, because it is not going to get any easier. You have a struggling Cal squad who is on the verge of being eliminated from any type of regional chances. They are fighting for it, and it would be a plus for them to stick it to Esquer as well. They never liked him, even when he was winning, they would find any excuse to talk bad. Remember what Milano did when Esquer was there?
All I am saying, is that it would have been nice for the pitchers to do their job after they were up by 4 to this team who could not find the plate. Hitters to take the opportunity to get some quality hits with the bases loaded to get some of those position players who don't play as much, some time out in the field.
Play to your level, not your opponents! U of A didn't let up, they played to their level in that 20-2 route.
Great call by the way if you are the Troy from the stream. How is that going to work this weekend, Cal does not have anybody announcing the stream. It is the view from above the press box and you have no clue what is going on as they have no score graphic up at all.

We play four games versus Cal this weekend. Friday through Sunday are in Berkeley, and there is a radio call on Cal's student radio station KALX on Saturday and Sunday. Monday's (considered non-conference) game is at Stanford so will have the Stanford Live Stream and radio call on KZSU.

I guess you can play the radio while watching their stream. I have watched a few of their games and come into it late. You have no clue what is going on and so I had to refer to the live stats to know what the score was and the inning. It is like the live stream when you pay enormous amounts of money to have your 12 year old play at the Cooperstown tournament.

Dave Chaney Middle Linebacker......what a game he had in 1972, he must have made 75% of the tackles for SJS, many for either a loss, no gain or short gain.

Chaney National Player of the Week and a first team All American. The greatest defensive game I ever saw and that includes 700 NFL games I've worked. Rod Garcia choked all day but more than made up for it in the Rose Bowl.

Both games (SJS-Stanford and Michigan-Stanford) had identical scores 13-12.
Marty Brill had a couple of games against usc that were close to being equally as impressive, especially when one considers he played on one leg (many, many knee issues).

Going to rein in the thread drift and bring us back to Baseball.
According to gostanford.com, KZSU will provide audio for the three games in Berkeley. It will be interesting to see who starts for the four-game series. I'm guessing Beck, Mathews, Williams, Pancer, with the hopes that Mathews bounces back from his rough outing versus Arizona.
Stanford has played the fewest conference games, but is second in home runs to UCLA, which has played six more conference games. We are second to Arizona in slugging percentage. Our pitching is 6th in conference strikeout rate and sixth in ERA (the 20-2 loss to Arizona really skews that number). Beck is 2nd in the conference in strikeouts and Grech is 1st in saves.
Stanford is #18 in RPI, while Cal is #106. Still left on the regular season schedule: #10 Oregon and #24 Oregon State.
So let's take care of business against the Dirty Golden Bear!
