Close, by Ledecky's standard, but the race was basically called with about 25 m left.

An add. This isn't even one of Ledecky's top 12 fastest 800 m races. I'm looking, and though I'm not sure, I think it would have been the world record for anyone not named Katie Ledecky.

I was shocked Davidson wasn't even in the 18. She's been great, and again, the Dahlkemper-O'Hara connection on the right side just wasn't there. But overall, this looked more like the USWNT. O'Hara gave up a penalty with a sloppy foul in the box, but Naeher saved that one to bail her out. Press looked sharp, scoring two goals that were ruled offside. (I think the US has had nine goals ruled offside so far this tournament? It's been bonkers.)
All very familiar teams in the semis. Canada got through on penalties over Brazil after a scoreless draw (and that's after all-time women's international goal-scoring leader Christine Sinclair of Canada was denied on the first shot and the great Marta buried hers to put Brazil up after the first round), Sweden was in control over Japan and won 3-1, and Australia won a banger of a match over Great Britain, 4-3. That's both of the top-scoring teams in the tournament, Brazil and the Netherlands, out in the quarters. The Netherlands scored 23 goals in this tournament, including an absurd 10 by Vivanne Miedema, but they didn't have enough today. Here's the bracket:
#5 Sweden vs. #9 Australia (8/2, 20:00 JST, so that's 4:00am Pacific)
#1 United States vs. #8 Canada (8/2, 17:00 JST, so that's 1:00am Pacific)
The idea that our group, G, was the Group of Death, is borne out by the fact it's produced three of the four teams left.

Grant Fisher came in 5th in the 10,000m run. He was within a couple yards of the leader with 400 to go. Only the third 10,000 race of his career. That was an awesome run. 90 degree heat with 90% humidity.

I thought Tafoya's question was strange, and Ledecky seemed surprised by it, too. She's said before she was targeting 2024, so the suggestion that she was weighing retirement after Tokyo seemed pretty out-of-the-blue to me. She's just 24, for goodness' sake!
Ledecky had a great race and went about a second lower than her best time coming in this year, while Titmus's slow prelim swim was clearly an energy-conserving move, because she shaved over a second and a half off her best time coming in, and she had a great last 50 to try and close the gap, but it was just too big.
The Worlds the next couple years and the 2024 Olympics are going to be fascinating in how Ledecky trains now that she's outside a college environment, what program Ledecky chooses to train for and race, and how much more Titmus (who is only 20) can improve. If Ledecky wants to hang with her in the 400, she's going to have to shave a couple of seconds off, and same thing if she wants to keep holding her off in the 800. That margin in the 1500 keeps getting smaller, too, so I'm eager to see how Ledecky responds to that challenge.

I never found Tofoya to be good at asking questions, maybe a little more prep time would help.

I agree, although Tafoya then said "six Olympic golds! it's amazing" so she was one short, all in all not her best 45 seconds.

Cam down to a brobdingnagian difference in the last exchange, Australia gained about .4 seconds after Weitzel was slow on the jump. Poor Regan Smith will get a gold eventually, but maybe not these Olympics
