This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one, but
Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma Sooners Unanimously Accept Invitation to SEC

Nobody is talking about the possibility of a football-only college league that breaks football off from all other sports.
The SEC is trying to have a conference with all sports. I don't think in the long run that is the best model. Ultimately, to profit maximize, you are going to want a football-only league. Perhaps the Big and Pac and ACC plus Notre Dame can form a football-only league that either tells the SEC to come for football only, or leaves it out. The SEC joining a football-only league would certainly blunt any revenue advantage it would have as a traditional conference playing football.
Schools will want the non-football sports in smaller conferences that are less spread out to reduce travel costs. But the SEC going all-in on all sports is forcing all its teams to play each other in all sports they play. Something has to give here. You can have Stanford and Rutgers play a league game in football. It doesn't make any sense to play it as a league game in say women's soccer.

Actually there has been quite a bit of talk about football-only alliances between the four non-SEC conferences (and possibly the AAC). As you pointed out it's impractical to have national conferences for non-football sports, but it could make sense for some combination of conferences to unite for football and thus jointly present a more compelling television package.

Lots of interesting/crazy ideas are floating around………
Why not add AZ, CO, UT, and ASU, to make it 24 teams with the 6 pacific schools in 1 division? It'll be a giant conference with average quality about the same as it was when the BigTen and Pac-12 were separate. Slight upgrade by screwing over OSU and WSU.
I'm not really proposing this. Just suggesting that there's probably no way to create a conference that competes at close to the same level as the SEC with Texas and Oklahoma added.
And competing with the new SEC would be even more difficult (really impossible) if the SEC were to poach Clemson and FSU from the ACC (which seems not that unlikely).
It would be a bit funny if all this realignment happened and then the Pac-12, Big Ten, ACC, and rump Big 12 outvoted the SEC on a shift to a 6-team playoff with each conference champion getting one spot and the highest-ranked G5 team getting a spot.
+1. Exactly what I was thinking. Time to outvote the almighty SEC.

If this happened as outline above would Norte Dame be excluded from the college football playoff?

There would be multiple novenas in South Bend. TD Jesus would come off the facade and lead an army of resurrected saints (Knute, Gipp, the 4 Horsemen, Pat O'Brien) to wake up the echoes.
No way the Irish are out of the playoff because since ESPN owns college football and NBC owns the Domers they are safe.

I cringe with the thought that NBC will merge the domers with the Olympics, I think they are testing out the concept with some of the announcers they have on prime time covering the Olympics; of course ABC took this approach when they had the Olympics and oj/usc.

Just wait until NBC and ESPN engineer Notre Dame to the SEC.

Don't think the domers would go for that since they would probably end up being non competitive with at least half of the sec if not more.

In addition to football being a not just a religion but a cult in Texas, TEXANS ARE TEXANS which means nothing is too big for them to conquer, or so they think.

Fair point, but the Domers aren’t exactly lacking in confidence.

A lot of the recent writing seems to be drifting toward FIVE 16 team Power 5 Confs that retain regional concentrations.
So, Pac12 may be forced to add 4 teams to negotiate a new TV contract.
Can Pac12 avoid the prohibition on religious schools" and add BYU or TCU?
In not... Then: BOIS, KANS, RICE, and SDST or TXTC.
Pac12 Coastal: the Pac8 schools.
Pac12 Mountain: CO, UT, both AZ, and the four above
Preserves rivalries and allows others to develop.
Two schools in TX help access to broader recruiting.

ND has a contractual obligation to join the ACC for football should they decide to join a conference for that purpose.

OSU and K-State would be better than any of those, if the Pac-12 can snag them. It’d be worth giving financial incentives to avoid having to take schools with far inferior athletic departments.

the domers are still suffering from both PTS and PMS, they just can't get beyond Fake Girl Friends and a white horse named Traveler from years past, just think what would have happened if they were on the receiving end of the "what's your deal.......what's your deal" debate.
