Anybody else watch the Texas - San Diego game on Sunday? I thought it was interesting.
Each team had only hours to prepare.
San Diego lost to ASU on Saturday, agreed to play late Saturday night, flew to Vegas on Sunday morning, arriving 4 hours before tip-off, and flew home after the game.
San Diego has another game (Texas State) on Tuesday.
San Diego did far better than I expected, staying within 10 points for virtually the whole game.
Down 8 going into the 4th. Down 9 with 3 minutes to go.

Texas's Rori Harmon only played 7 minutes total before fouling out.
So, how did this undersized, under-talented team hang in there?
Both ends of the court were chaotic. SD was jumping from player to player. Texas rarely got to run a set play. Texas had some good transitions in the 2nd, but otherwise wasn't well oiled.
One of the things that SD was doing that I don't see Stanford doing (and maybe with good reason) was inbounding the ball well in front of a (defended) player. When the SD player got to the ball, she was already moving at a good pace.
I'd be curious what other people thought of the game.
(If Stanford is #2 in the polls this week, I expect there will be some Longhorn fans saying they should be #2.)

Yes, MT, I watched a bit of the game and was shocked at how well they did against Texas. Part of me thinks that Texas's performance against us was in part the product of a whole lot of preparatory work geared specifically toward disrupting Tara's system, and that given one day's notice things might have been quite different. Nevertheless, we had the same time to prepare for Texas, and didn't do so adequately. So seeing San Diego State do reasonably well against them--with no prep time and vastly less heralded players-- is a revelation.

Also, UConn drops out of the Top 10 for the first time since 2005.

I looked up info on the Pac-12 tournament and according to the available tickets it looks to be a heavily attended tournament. Now, I don't believe this to be true seeing as every year the attendance isn't that high and you're able to move around a bit and get closer to the action if you so choose.
Is this a marketing scheme to get everyone to buy tickets in the lower bowl so the crowd size looks bigger on camera? That was my first though but this can't be true, right?
Also, what about the floor seats. They've already been snatched a month after tickets went on sale? For women's basketball I don't believe this to be true. I go to the tournament almost every year and I don't see all the seats taken. I know people buy the all sessions pass just to secure their seat and don't show up for other games.
Lastly, I don't see anything about "VIP" tickets or anything like that. Don't they usually have tables behind the baskets and special roped off sections to bypass the food and drink lines? I wouldn't choose this but I'm just wondering why the ticket selection is so bare.

I am beginning to wonder if the Stanford/South Carolina game will turn out to be the closest thing to a national championship game in WBB this year. I hope not--that we have a fulsome season. But I think the cancellations are just getting started.

I think we'll see a lot of cancelations through January, but at the rate omicron is spreading, there won't be enough hosts left for widespread outbreaks for much more than 4-6 weeks from now unless a major new variant spreads that is nearly as infectious but far more fatal, and if that happens (and I don't think it will), it will likely take a few months to emerge.
Otherwise, while I have no idea how they will seed a tournament with 1/4 of a season having been canceled, I do think by March we'll be past this and, hopefully, into the endemic stage of COVID-19.

I believe it was during the Stanford v. South Carolina game that an announcer(?) indicated that the WBB tournament committee was meeting to decide (IIRC) a minimum number of games for a team to participate.

It's also an odd threshold . . . if everyone plays 50% of scheduled games, then everyone eligible for the conference tourney. Okay . . .
What really matters is if NCAA has any threshold # of games for participation. If so, I imagine the number will be sufficiently low/attainable for all P5 schools. Of course, I also think protocols will be modified/loosened to allow for more participants in games.

So Utah and Colorado have both cancelled this weekend's games.
Perhaps the remaining teams should plan on meeting in Vegas or something and just play who's available. Draw straws or something.

The only games still scheduled are the Bay Area teams vs WSU. For now, anyway. I think it is close to impossible to keep a large traveling party with students involved totally COVID free during this Omicron surge. Things may be better in a few weeks but a whole lot of games are going to be postponed and many will never get played. Can't make them all up.

Delay the end of season by a month or even two months. It would mean NCAA & Conference tournaments get delayed, which would require agreement from the venues (which may not be feasible).
My guess is that NCAA & conference people would rather (effectively) lose a third of the season than to delay the tournaments. But it can be delayed two months and still be all done before NCAA baseball wraps up the sports year.
