As should have been expected, after Lance had a really bad practice on Sunday, he bounced back Tuesday to have his best one of Summer so far.
What does this mean?
I'm sure those who were using the minimally important data point about Lance having a bad Sunday practice to conclude he is not ready or that he is even a bust, will be changing their minds and concluding he's now going to be an effective QB for the Niners this season, right? Who am I kidding. Lance does poorly in practice, then he isn't ready. Lance does well in practice, it was JUST practice, so you can't draw anything from it.
The reality is not all practices are made the same. Apparently, Shanahan employed an offensive attack that was much more difficult for the defense to defend on Tuesday. It included incorporating zone read with an actual threat for a QB run, Deebo in the backfield, plus other things that will be part of a regular season offense, and the offense shined including a 65 yard Lance TD run, 14-19 and no INT.
It seems far fetched to think Lance will be as good as Mahomes or Herbert was in their first year as a starter, but I believe Lance will be better than Josh Allen was in his. My question is what will be good enough for Lance to silence his critics?

I guess I would respond that speculation is not criticism.
We are all waiting to see him play in a game that counts as the acknowledged #1.
Basically here I would state the old Thunderdome motto but the Cardboard is made up of Stanford Men who tread lightly on admonishment. So instead patience is needed for the ultra inexperienced QB who ultimately could be Johnny Unitas or Maury Duncan.
Relax.

Skepticism isn't criticism either. It's a need for more information to draw a conclusion.
I'm skeptical Trey Lance will be a great NFL QB. I'm not skeptical he will be a solid NFL QB. We'll see.

I forgot which thread this was, and wondered how it was possible for Stanford's DC to have a good or bad practice, or what a good/bad practice even looks like for a coach.

How bout we see him play a couple regular season games. At least then we will have some information to draw conclusions with. Not much, but some. What he does day to day in practice doesn’t tell us much….

I agree the day-to-day practice reports don't mean much in terms of proof of anything. My confidence that Lance will be at least solid, and it was time to move on from Garoppolo, is based on the mere fact I have trust in and think I know Kyle Shanahan wouldn't go with Lance over Garoppolo unless he had good reasons to believe Lance could handle it.
He isn't David Shaw choosing Jack West as a starter over Tanner McKee.

Supposedly the Cleveland Browns are targeting Garoppolo because the NFL wants to ban Deshaun Watson for at least a year. I've heard that if the suspension is for 10 games or more, the Browns will approach the 49ers for a trade.

Well, Lance only got limited action (given that it is early preseason, this makes sense)… and it was… not bad. He had 6 dropbacks, gif sacked once, and completed 4/5 passes for 92 yards and a TD. Niners did win 28-21.

Guys who stood out in a good way to my eyes:
DB Womack III
LB Oren Burks
OG Jason Poe
WR Danny Gray
QB Brock Purdy
As a whole, the rookies showed a lot, and the draft class looks promising.
Lance didn't do anything dazzling, though he seemed to outplay Jordan Love. By far the most underrated and important thing he did was slide in middle of field to avoid a hit. Lance said after the game that is the first time he ever slid in his career. It seems to me Andrew Luck and Cam Newton both had their careers cut short because they didn't slide early in their careers, thinking being big guys they could take the punishment. Just that alone shows a maturity, situational awareness, and self preservation mindset that will serve Lance and the Niners well.
The defense was pretty poor minus the turnovers.

These games shouldn’t be played. I wish the players union would fight to end them. They prove nothing. And every year key players get lost. Jets probably lost their QB for the year. Opens up a possible landing spot for JG. Although I hope not. He doesn’t deserve that.

Bo Jackson had run a 4.12. Deion Sanders clocked at 4.20. Nehemiah was 4.10.
Kalon Barnes (now on the Jets) ran the fastest 40 at the 2022 NFL combine in 4.23. Danny Gray was seventh at 4.33 which was blazing fast.
The Niners love speed. Drake Jackson was 3rd/4th fastest among DLs with a 4.50. Gray was 7th overall. Tariq Castro-Fields was 20th with a 4.38. Sam Womack ran a 4.39.

Injuries piling up in defensive backfield. Better now than later. But this has been an issue last couple years.
