Tough out there for everyone, but we have taken a good lead over second place by 7 strokes.

Scoring conditions were tough this morning! I don't know if it's related to weather or course conditions (pin placements, green speed) or both. Stanford posted a 290 (+2), 17 shots higher than yesterday. But some of the other top teams fell even further. Wake Forest posted 299. South Carolina shot 302. Lauren Walsh from Wake Forest was leading the tournament through 36 holes. She posted an 11(!!) on the par 5 4th hole. Stanford had a few double bogeys but avoided bigger numbers. The players showed good grit to recover from those bad holes. And the team finished strong with Englemann finishing birdie-eagle and Zhang making birdie on 18.
Stanford is now 19 shots clear of the 9th place team and in excellent position to advance to match play which only includes the top 8. Rose Zhang has moved up to 3rd in the individual race. One stroke play round to go tomorrow and it will be televised on Golf Channel. Stanford and the other leaders will probably tee off later in the day so that they are finishing in prime time for TV.

Wow what a change from yesterday. My guess is the tournament committee was not happy with a record-low round yesterday and decided to toughen up the pin placements today. Our ladies were up to the challenge and sit where they belong going into tomorrows final round
Big disappointment for San Jose St. ranked in the top 10 all year and misses the cut for the final round
U$Cs Catherine Park leads Rose by 4, but my guess is she’s not gonna sleep very well tonight knowing that the best amateur in the world is within striking distance

Oops! I thought everyone was done when I wrote that. Mississippi St at #5 would be an even bigger shock though. One of those two is gonna be seriously bummed

Mississippi State with a strong enough finish to leap over SJSU & SMU, and the Spartans ended up in 16th place, eliminated.

Stanford will tee off tomorrow starting at 11:50 am. The Golf Channel will have a one hour Golf Central show beginning at 1 pm where they will talk about the tournament, teams and players with some live look ins. Full coverage will begin at 2 pm and run until 6 pm.
The main focus of the tv coverage tomorrow will be the race for the individual championship so don't fret if it seems like they are showing a lot of players on teams other than Stanford (except for Rose Zhang).

Ouch! 15 teams advance and San Jose State finished 16th. SMU, the 15th team stands at +17 while San Jose State finished at +18.
Stanford is in 1st with -13 and the 8th place teams (actually two teams tied a 7th) sit at +5. I believe scores are carried forward into tomorrow's final round of team play so the Spartans probably would not have challenged for the final 8 but it still must have been a tough cut for the team. San Jose State's Lucia Lopez-Ortega is still a factor in the individual title.

As the first Stanford players are on the 9th hole, the Cardinal has maintained its position at the top. They are 6 strokes ahead of the 2nd place teams. If Stanford does win the stroke play, it will be the 3rd consecutive year as the #1 seed for match play.
So let’s talk about match play. It’s a different game compared to stroke play. You are still playing the golf course, but the standard is not par, it’s how you do against your opponent. You can play great and lose or struggle and still win. Stanford has qualified for match play every year since 2015 when the NCAA switched to this format (except for 2020 when the tournament was cancelled) so we have seen a lot of different results.
Three keys to success – scrambling well, putting well and being patient. It’s so tough on your opponent when you force a halve or even win a hole from off the green when they are in birdie range. Making putts keeps the pressure on your opponent. You hope it will lead to them making mistakes. When Stanford has won (both the men and women), the players have been so solid around the hole. And there will be an ebb and flow to the match. When you make a mistake or lose a hole (maybe your opponent just made a great shot), don’t let it become 2 or 3 lost holes in a row. Refocus and get back to your game plan.
Another unique aspect of match play is that the coaches have a very real impact on the potential result. The coaches choose the head-to-head match ups. Who do you want to send out first? Your best players to set the tone? Or do you save them to be anchors? Where do you put freshmen who may not have prior experience? Lots of factors to consider. And no one has more experience with this than Anne Walker. In Coach Walker we trust.
Fatigue can also be a factor for teams that advance to the semifinals. They will play 2 matches in one day tomorrow. Heat, physical fatigue and mental stress can really take a toll on players.
Among Stanford’s 5 players, Zhang, Englemann and Seay have prior experience at NCAA match play. In 2022, Zhang was 2-1, Englemann was 0-3 and Seay was 3-0. In 2021, Englemann was 0-1 and Seay was 1-0. Don’t assume from this that Englemann is not a good match play golfer. I looked at her matches. In 2 of them, she was 2 under par. But her opponents were better.
You might ask, “Who would Stanford prefer to play?” It doesn’t really matter. All 8 of the teams are really good. Any of them could win. Arizona won from the 8 seed in 2017. Washington and Mississippi have both won from the 4 seed. The #1 seed has only won once - last year when Stanford took home the trophy.

USC's Park still leads the individual at -10 (E thru 10)
Stanford's Zhang (-3 thru 7) and 2 others are at -9.
The other two started on the back 9 which I think is harder, but are through 9 and 13 holes.
Park and Zhang started on front 9.
(There's another Zhang at -7, so I realized I should indicate which one)

Rose Zhang, through 7, is tied with two others at -9 and one shot off the leader, Catherine Park of USC.
The two players tied with Rose at -7 are Maddison Hinson-Tolchard of Oklahoma St. and San Jose State's Lucia Lopez-Ortega.

Watch out for Lopez-Ortega.. For the tourney, she's -2 for her remaining holes.
R. Zhang and Park are par for their remaining holes.
At least Zhang is following the others so she knows how much to risk or not.

R Zhang has 4 holes left. She has 7 birdies and 1 bogey in the 15 par-5s she's played in this tourney. #18 is a par 5.
But Lopez-Ortega has 3 holes left and is -2 for the tourney on those.
Lauren Walsh of Wake Forest is playing with Zhang and is also -4 for the day, 3 off the pace. She has an outside chance of taking the lead, which would put Wake Forest ahead of Stanford.

We had a comfortable 7 stroke lead which is down to 1 with some 4-5 holes to go.
Zhang with a 1 stroke lead after 15 holes.

So Zhang is one ahead of Park who has finished.

In a blink of an eye, we're up 5 strokes in the team competition. Zhang up 1 after 16. Par the last 2 holes and she should win first place in individuals.
Up 6 on the team as everyone has finished the 17th hole.
Zhang needs to par 18 to win the individual championship.
