I heard from a UCLA baseball alum that they were also in the running (as was originally rumored Vandy), but he made the right decision!
If you watched this documentary (it was aired on ESPN during the pandemic), his dad was featured as a supporting character endorsing change, kind of foreshadowing this type of trailblazing move.

I read the press release as he will enroll for spring 2024 but not play until spring 2025. Not sure why they don't have him play this year if he's eligible as I would imagine he goes to the MLB draft as soon as eligible.

I’m hoping BobK can shed some light on this, including whether he might receive the rare full ride (I understand baseball splits scholarships across players) because the Japanese Yen is so weak and high school teachers/coaches make very little. :)

Maybe being able to go to classes taught in a foreign language at an elite university in a foreign country halfway around the world without having to worry about being the starting first baseman on a ranked team?

He is only 17 and likely can't be drafted until 2027. That would still give him 3 years of playing at Stanford before he goes pro. It also likely increases his chances of receiving his degree.

I don't think you are. The kid obliterated the career home run record for Japanese high school baseball and also takes twice as many walks as strikeouts. I'm taking a wild guess, but I'd think he'd project to be at least at the level that Carter Graham reached here. Probably not his freshman year, but who knows.
