According to Ann Killion https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/annkillion/article/women-s-march-madness-joins-sports-elite-19381690.php

we could have had Fran had she been accepted into the same program she ended up doing at Harvard.

We have 2 open scholarships (3 if Green is still a walk-on) for any of the talented Oregon St players who want to transfer.

I've seen it reported that Belibi is at Harvard Medical School. If so, doesn't it seem like a self-inflicted wound to not have found a way for her to attend at Stanford? We all acknowledge that it's really hard to get admitted to a Stanford grad program generally (obviously some departments harder than others). But if there's a known quantity student at Stanford who excelled enough to get into Harvard (again presumably for medical school), the fact that the University has no process to look at a few individual cases like this makes me very pessimistic. I mean, Stanford just made a brobdingnagian financial commitment to support the athletics department in shifting to the ACC. What was the point of doing that if the University won't make accommodations to keep someone who got admitted to Harvard on her academic merits? Insert 'this is fine' gif here.

RE: Class of 2025+ - BobK - 04-03-2024

We don’t know Fran applied
She is in school now with her sisters

Where would she have played at Stanford?

The Chronicle article stated Fran didn’t get into the Stanford medical program she wanted. Meaning she would have had to apply to be denied. I read it as though she would have played another season if she could have completed her graduate studies at Stanford.

Bob, Ann Killion’s article says Belibi applied to Stanford and didn’t get admitted. Do you know something that we don’t?

Wouldn’t she have been a great third post to keep Brink out of foul trouble? I know she’s more of a 4, but she was a great high post screener for H Jump and maybe Brink picks up fewer offensive fouls because Belibi gets some minutes when the refs seem to be hunting for offensive fouls.

I think the point remains that someone who can get into Harvard and play championship level basketball is someone that shouldn’t have gotten away.

So, you're mad at the medical school admissions' people for not accepting her and letting her get away?

No ones mad at anyone. Understand some context here. Tara and Coach Smith have said the graduate schools admissions process needs to change some to more easily allow graduate transfers and I suppose keep existing players (Fran) who want to attend grad school at Stanford. USC has 3 Ivey League grad transfers. Some of those kids are smart enough to attend Stanford grad school but the process is too complicated and requires applications be submitted in the fall. These are not uneducated players trying to get into Stanford on a long shot. They have the pedigree. Same for Fran. With how much transfers have changed college basketball, yes I expect some grad school changes within Stanford in the future. Listen to Tara everyone.

RE: Class of 2025+ - BobK - 04-03-2024

Actually grad school applications are November thru March. Not just fall. Of course each grad school has their own rules. An Ivy League grad knew to apply early if desired by them as the ivy’s don’t allow a 5th
Why Fran couldn’t get into Stanford is a mystery but there are athletes that do. Track has 5 Stanford grads in grad school for instance. Not easy for sure

RE: Class of 2025+ - crackpot - 04-03-2024

From the article:

Forward Fran Belibi wanted to play another year at Stanford but wasn’t accepted into the medical program to which she applied. She had to settle for the same program at Harvard, though Belibi has been visibly present around the Cardinal team this season. In addition, the undergrad portal doesn’t do VanDerveer much good because Stanford’s overall acceptance of undergrad transfers is minuscule.

RE: Class of 2025+ - Goose - 04-03-2024

Based on the wording of the article, Fran may have applied to a grad program at Stanford, not the medical school. Medical school isn't a one year program, even best case :-).  The description in the article doesn't match that IMO. Obviously I don't actually know. She may well have been willing to spend another year at Stanford in a specific graduate school program, get another degree and then go to med school at Harvard. However, given that wasn't an option she moved on.

The "Listen to Tara" argument doesn't resonate for me. IMO the preference athletes get in undergraduate admissions is borderline. It can be justified by arguing that athletics is a character builder and that it should count for something academically. A contributing argument in the past was that academic success at Stanford was not that much of an "exact science" and admissions were somewhat arbitrary.  While the latter is still true, the former is not. It is actually pretty hard to "fail" at Stanford these days if your only goal is to stay eligible. Granted, some have managed to fail, but it takes (lack of) effort

Graduate school admission has always been the prerogative of the department itself. Changing that in any way is going to generate a ton of pushback that will make SLAC vs. the Physics Department look like patty-cakes.  Changing this process by overlaying some kind of fiat from the administration seems to me to be academically dishonest. Much like the athletic coaches, the academic faculty chooses the "players" they want. Why should the former trump the latter? Raising awareness within the academic faculty of a given athlete's value to the University on the field of play may or may not have an effect on their admission chances. I suspect generally the latter, but YMMV.

The Athletic had a poll of players during Round 16, the Oregon coach came in second in which coach players did not want to play for, he was a distant second from Mulkey.

Kim Mulkey and Dawn Staley: Players say they’d want one as a coach. The other? Not so much - The Athletic

I was surprised to see Graves at #2 (albeit far behind Mulkey). I didn't even realize that many of this generation's players were aware of him. Something really weird going on there.

There is a link in that article to one I'd previously missed--asking the players who was the worst trash-talker. Cam came in at #2. 85 players, 65 of whom played in the Sweet 16. Perhaps she got all of the UCLA votes.

RE: Class of 2025+ - mbdude - 04-04-2024

Graves had some players in tournament, just not playing for Oregon
