RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - Leftcoast - 03-29-2024

Four of the five pros at ESPN didn't predict an OSU win.  (Kudos to Adelson who DID choose OSU over Notre Dame)  With OSU's win, it's now easy to see a path for at least four Pac 12 teams in the round of 8.  Unfortunately this would likely include the Traitorious Two.

ESPN predictions for OSU v ND:
Quote:Which team will advance?

Adelson: Oregon State 71, Notre Dame 70
Creme: Notre Dame 65, Oregon State 61
Pelton: Notre Dame 70, Oregon State 66
Philippou: Notre Dame 66, Oregon State 56
Voepel: Notre Dame 74, Oregon State 66

ND forced something like 25 turnovers, but somehow OSU overcame it. Better shooting and rebounding were a big part.

Wow. A quick glance at the box score: Talia Von O only went 1-7 but the rest of the team shot 68%. ND only shot about 35%. OSU outrebounded ND 43-24 (Beers and Gardiner had 13 and 11). So yeah, that’s how you overcome 26 TOs.

I think there's a really good chance that Colorado takes down Iowa. If Clark struggled against the ballhawking D of West Va, wait until she gets a taste of the Colorado guards!

I’ll be there cheering for CO and UCLA tomorrow! And OSU on Sunday.

With ND leading 59-57, two consecutive 3-pointers by Oregon State (by freshman HUNTER and sophomore HANSFORD)
makes it 63-59 for Oregon State with 2:04 remaining.  After ND cuts the Beavers' lead down to two, 63-61,
a key steal by HUNTER off HIDALGO at 1:14 and a key block by VAN OELHOFFEN on CITRON at 0:20
helped seal the deal for Oregon State. A very exhilarating finish!

Oregon State also held ND freshman phenom HIDALGO to 10 points on 4-17 shooting.

Sophomores GARDINER and BEERS, Oregon State's Top 10 recruits from 2022 and pretty much
their only Top 10 recruits over the past two decades, led the Beavers with 21 points/11 rebounds
and 18 points/13 rebounds respectively.  While BEERS dominated with her inside moves,
GARDINER was spectacular with her all-around repertoire of shots inside the paint, mid-range
and from beyond the arc.

There was also the issue of Hidalgo's nose ring.

I kind of feel bad.  Yes, it is in the rules, but f you are going to make something a point of emphasis after ignoring it the entire year, you should tell the players before the game starts. She missed 4:09 from the second quarter while the trainers were getting it off.  Hard to know how that episode disrupted her, but she did wind up with a pretty lousy game (4/17 shooting, 0/3 from 3).

Crazy that Notre Dame only played 6 players the entire game.

Ouch. I hear you, BC. A really silly situation.

My main gripe with the season now is that Geno now has an opportunity to catch up a few notches in the win column behind Tara.

Betts is having a great game vs LSU.  16 rebounds.  Losing Betts to the transfer portal really hurt.

Losing Angess Emma Nnopu also hurt, she was the most athletic guard on the team with good quickness, and a very good defender.

LSU wins. Every two seed has now lost. The curse of #2 continues, poll rating and now NCAA tournament.

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - crackpot - 03-30-2024

If UCLA had made a decent % of FTs, they could have won this.

Betts has turned into quite the player.
I had previously thought she lacked athleticism, but I no longer do.

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - Jskass - 03-30-2024

In Albany and watched in person - two key things: first half horrendous three point shooting which they overcame but then total collapse late game - Rice trying to do it all. The difference in team experience at this stage in NCAA apparent.

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - BosCard - 03-30-2024

I feel a little bit better with UCLA’s loss.  I was rooting for them so not happy they lost.  Just reminded that the Sweet 16 is where you really see the parity in women’s basketball.  And if you are a 3 point shooting team (like us and UCLA) and you shoot 20% in the sweet sixteen, then you’re going home because the other teams at this stage are too good.  You need to play your best game or you’re going home.  Maybe South Carolina can play their B game but Indiana really pushed them.

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - crackpot - 03-30-2024

ALL this talent, and they bow out in the S16? In her entire UCLA career, with impressive recruiting, they made the Elite Eight only once.

Yeah, one of the real downsides of the PAC-12s demise is that we won’t get to face Cori Close (the gift that keeps on giving) any more.

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - PVTree - 03-31-2024

Although I'm not a fan of Mulkey nor Reese (do like Hailey), I am glad UCLA (the traitorous two as someone put it, and I will be adopting) lost.

Getting down to there being few teams I won't mind that they win the championship. I don't want:

-Yukon (obvious reasons)
-U$C (spearheaded the P12 Demise)
-TX (getting "Sears" points)
-LSU (don't like Mulkey, nor Reese)
-Iowa (Clark's head is too big as it is)

Ok to win:
-OSU (good coach, good players)
-SCar (respect their coach)
-NCST (means champ eliminated us)

Anybody catch Reese making some comment to the UCLA bench as she walked off the floor after her fifth foul late in the game? (Hard to miss if you were watching the game.) Nobody seems to know what she said (or will disclose it if they do), but it was enough to make Cori Close to go absolutely nuts and call for a technical on Reese.
Reese seems to embrace her "bad girl" image.

RE: WBB: the NCAA tournament - Jskass - 03-31-2024

Was at game and did not see, but someone on Boneyard indicated she was rude to an assistant coach.

"
It has been suggested that she commented on the foul "Weak (expletive deleted) call."
