RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Hieronymus - 11-22-2024

Game on vs. UConn with worlds least talkative announcers.

Both teams have formation changes.
UConn in a 433
Stanford 4231. I have never seen us play 2 Dmids. I theoretically like the idea to cover CB problems, and to not play Klinger out of position at CF. The question is will they know their roles?

Evans is shifted to RCB I assume to be closer to Okafor.

And the thing we couldn’t do. Boamah coughs it up 1:0 UConn.

Back to the 433 since the goal.

Header off the post on a corner doesn’t go in.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Hieronymus - 11-22-2024

Halftime still 1:0

On the one hand Stanford has controlled play
.
on the other, last shot and last pass have been terrible. Weak, tentative shooting and most crosses have gone out of bounds or to the goalie. And of course there have been several really bad turnovers in the back, one that led to the goal.

Right now it’s textbook how to outplay but lose to an inferior team.

Off to the airport. I will have to watch half 2 later.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 11-22-2024

Stanford finally broke through to tie in the 86th minute on a great effort by Allie Montoya to break free and cross to a waiting Shae Harvey who scored on a header.

Stanford then got the winner with 11 seconds remaining on a put back by Montoya at close range after the UConn goalie had blocked a shot by Lizzie Boamah.

Stanford moving on to face the winner of Arkansas vs. Cal.

I was following along with the box score since I don't have ESPN+. They recorded the goal at 89:49 (which does not appear to be accurate).

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - DenverCard - 11-22-2024

Sometimes it seems Stanford has to overcome Paul Ratcliffe's decisions in order to have success.  In particular, I don't know why he does not play Lumi Kostmayer more.  I understand that she is not the fleetest of foot, but she holds the ball well and creates a lot of chances for other players.  And she is more than willing to shoot the ball (albeit sometimes in what the Brits euphemistically term "speculative" situations).  The offense tends to perk up when she is in.  Also, I like Lizzie Boamah as a forward more than defender.  She often has success taking on her defender and creating opportunities.

Is there a more painful viewing experience than watching soccer when your team is behind?  The insecurity kicks in with a half to go, and gets progressively worse.  I hate it when Stanford has a lead and takes the ball to the corner to kill time; it's torture when the shoe is on the other foot.  I admit I bailed out in response to such an act by UConn with about six minutes left.  After a time I checked the live stats expecting to have the loss confirmed and it was 1-1.  Massive props to a team that, unlike this fan, never quits.

FSU just lost to Vandy on PKs! Cherish that win today Cardinal fans. Making the 3rd round isn't easy.

Stanford vs. Arkansas (1-0 winner over Cal) at 4 pm pacific on Sunday in the 3rd round.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Hieronymus - 11-22-2024

Gutsy win but it wasn’t very pretty. Fortunately, UConn is just flat out bad - besides the admittedly great finish on the turnover, they did nothing with the ball and barely threatened. I was convinced they were not good after their first round win, but I thought they would at least be a little dangerous on the counter. Nope.

Stanford flipped into a 334 midway in the second half with Boamah moving to the rarely seen RCF position and Murdock at LB. It still wasn’t a thing of beauty, and the first goal was lucky; but it got the job done.

I have no idea if Arkansas is actually good. I guess we are going to find out.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Hieronymus - 11-22-2024

So if I am counting right only 3 conferences are left at this point.

6 ACC teams
7 Big 10 teams
3 SEC teams

Gives me a little hope that Arkansas is overrated since the SEC has mostly underperformed. Minus Vanderbilt that is. Beating FSU is clearly the shock of the tournament.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - BobK - 11-23-2024

This fan thought a beautiful win.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Hieronymus - 11-24-2024

1:0 Arkansas at half. An unmarked header put Arkansas up.

Lumi shot 1 second too slow at the end of the half.

Overall, Arkansas is bigger, faster and stronger at al basically every position. Stanford  is better at Soccer and has had better chances, but finishing remains a problem. Kitahata had a 1 v 1 straight to the goalie as the best chance in the half.

Looks like we got the equalizer, though the live stats has us scoring 2 goals, but the game tied.

Kostmayer's goal at the end of the half was disallowed after video review. Came one second too late.

RE: Stanford Women’s soccer 2024 - Hieronymus - 11-24-2024

1:1 on a great Kohler finish from distance.

The middle is wide open - including the goal. Stop going wide - Kohler and Harvey need to drive the middle.
